My new foster Savannah!!!!

Yes I'm crazy!!!! But she's had a bad couple yrs of life as her former daddy shouldn't even own a pet rock. I am gonna try to help her out with socializing her and try to put an end to her fears of men and many other things. She was neglected and doesn't even feel worthy of a bone given to her :( wish me luck!!!!

My hats off to you Leslie. I hope you're not getting in over your head though. Introducing an adult Bull Terrier into your home with your other two is going to be difficult.

Keep us posted on her status and progress.

  • Thankyou Steve! I'm expecting a level of difficulty and she is going to meet me to ma ke sure everyone gets along and I plan to keep them seperate at the begining. She is always willing to take her back if all else fails. I am g onna at least try and hope for the best. I hope I can count on you for support if needed?? I figure if I can handle Brutiful she should be a breeze ( or not!!! ) I think I might have lost my dam mind!!!!!

Well, if all goes well, when you get her home give her a good bath (preferably outside). Then dry her off with a towel. That first step will at least start her with common scents of familiarity when she's brought inside. I would then introduce the dogs while they are each in a kennel. You may want to leave them almost door to door during the night so they smell each other and start getting used to each other. The following day you can introduce them while they are leashed and under control.

Leslie... That's an excellent way to give away your age! Now we know you are under 30... You must be to have the courage for this undertaking... But I applaud you, and can only add that everything is made possible with prayer... So I'll be praying over every picture and post you land and wishing you strength to handle what I know I couldn't ( at my age ) ... You will be blessed for your efforts anyhow but you must let us know if we can help in any method.... Best luck and strength.!

  • Awww, how could somebody not take care of Savannah, look at that Bully-Face!!!

    Good luck Leslie!
  • I'm taken away by your kindness Leslie. Such gestures and caring never goes unrewarded. She's a pretty girl and deserves better than what she's had. And I'm sure you'll provide that for her. You have my respect and admiration.  =D>
  • Xtracho, thankyou for your words of kindness. I have a heart bigger than my whole body when it comes to abused and neglected dogs. My worry is I will be so attached I will have a difficult time letting her go. However if my heartache benefits her in anyway I can't help but try. God willing everything will work out as it should.

  • Gonna need all I can get!!!! Which brings me to my Steve question, I intend to heed your advise on the bathing. How would you introduce the 2 legged baby and dogs??? Off my property or on dog at a time after kid?? Please elaborate as I value your opinion as I know you have been their and done that many times.........if she shows any aggressive behavior to my child what is your advise their as well. Thanks Steve!!!

With a new dog in the house there's going to be a lot of energy and hyperness going on. With this said, it may take some time to introduce the new Bullie to small children which is good since it will give you time to get more familiar with her true temperament and character.
When the time comes I would introduce the two inside the home where the dog will be less prone to jumping around and playing. Introduce the two when Savannah is calm and relaxed and listening to you well. If you're nervous at all don't be afraid to use a muzzle for precautionary purposes.
I'm sure after getting to know her you'll have a lot more confidence in her if she's reacting appropriately and being a good natured Bullie.

  • I asked that they send her with a soft muzzle just in case should I introduce the dogs seperatly as well?? Meaning brutus/savannah cleo/sevannah so savannah is not overwhelmed?? And with the dogs inside or out?

Keep the other dogs away during introduction to minimize the energy level, excitement, and any possible jealousy.

  • My husbands friend stopped by with his pug today and I will be getting Savannah Monday night or Tuesday I think were in good shape here as my kids were on their best behavior with this pug. I'm extremly proud of Brutus as he was a perfect gentleman to that male pug even in his house!!!!

That's a real good sign and it's nice to see them acting appropriately with a new dog on their turf. A dog with true aggression problems would have initiated a fight immediately. The pug may not have shown any signs or interest in acting dominant which was well accepted by your bullies. The concern would be introducing two dogs that which shared some dominant traits and wished to test their boundaries with each other.

  • I spoke with Kim today and she said she has done well with her dogs too so I am expecting the worst and hoping for the best. Caution will be taken at every level. Heres one 4 u Steve, she shows aggresion at night and when being crated?? I'm assuming she was maybe hurt being crated by her previous foster and the nightly aggression I guess I will have to witness it in person. But why would it be just at night??

Leslie, Those are two marvelous looking creatures!!! I don't know why Brutus seems so interested in the Cinnabon on that other funny looking dog's back?

@Leslie - Oddly many dogs seem to have built up energy at night. I think a lot has to do with the time in which the dog was last let loose outside to exert some energy and the time frame in which they ate their last meal of the day. I truly don't know the reasons for it but this is only my guess.

I think she can be easily transitioned to overcome any form of aggression when crating her once she realizes it's a happy place not a place to be thrown for disciplinary repercussions. During the night she may be used to being disciplined by her previous owners that may not have taken lightly to her activity level when they were ready to go to sleep. How they handled her energy level at night is unknown but it may very well have created an impact on her expectations of human behavior at night.

I think she will adjust quickly to a new ways she's treated both at night and day and react more positive to the patience and love she receives. Once her fears fade so will her negative behavior. Your first week will be difficult but it will also provide you with more confidence of her true temperament and personality over what anyone else is describing to you right now. Give it time for you to assess her and see what works in order to fine tune her to adjust within the confinements of your home, your family, and your other dogs. She just may surprise you with her ability to adapt and conform appropriately.

  • Sadly last night after plans were made for pickup the owner of Savannah changed his mind and decieded to keep her. Kim is very upset as am I. However she's is going to require him to work with a trainer that she sets up and do home checks regularly. Poor Savannah but hopefully this man can be trained. Last wk. He was scared of her and she of course has taken full advantage of that weakness. I am on standby for now. He has yet today to take Kims phone calls. How in the hell do I get myself involved in this stuff?????!!!

That's too bad. I didn't realize Savannah was still with her original owner. He probably just decided to giver her to a friend of his and doesn't wish to tell anyone. Sadly Kim's not going to having any say in what "her" requirements are on his dog. If he doesn't wish to have Kim come to his residence for periodic checkups he doesn't have to nor does he have to commit to working with a dog trainer. This may be why he's not answering Kim's calls.

Well I'm sorry to hear they got your hopes up and all prepared for her arrival with you. I can imagine you feel pretty let down. But I commend you for the commitment to foster her and help her with the pursuit to find her the best possible loving home.

  • Thanks Steve! Yeah my kid was the most let down I believe as he was all prepared to teach her new tricks!! I'm sure I'm not off the hook their getting a ton of them for some reason right now and they go all over the US to save them. I found that I'm much more interested than I thought on this whole foster idea!!! We shall see what arises in the near future.......

Well I think that's really wonderful of you. Additionally, in the event you ever foster one and wish to provide some visibility for the purpose of adoption I'd be happy to facilitate the efforts on our website. The individuals could see the photos and info and contact you to initiate an interview so you could confidently choose the home you felt best suited for the individual dog.

  • Sad story  about Savannah.  If she is being cruelly treated, maybe someone can turn the situation in to animal welfare.
  • Steve thanks so much I will certainly keep you in mind your thoughtfulness will not go unappreciated!!!

  • I'm sorry to hear that plans fell through Leslie.

I have a feeling that won't be the last foster-bully that will cross your path in need of a loving home until a forever home can be found.
  • I talked to Savannahs dad today and it seems I have totally misjudged him I was wrong!! He actually cancelled last night because he's having a difficult time letting her go even though he knows its for the best because of his situation. He has rearranged to get her to me tommorrow I actually kinda feel for him. He's scared of her is all and she's taken full advvantage. She will just randomly pick items and growl and snap if he comes near. He is over his head with this breed is all. Soooooo here we go again gonna pick her up tommorrow "I think" ???????? He's only had her for 3 wks she was with another foster mom before when she was abandoned.
