New dog has been bleeding a lot for over 2 weeks
Hi, I am new to the forum. We got our new bull terrier, Beyla, over 2 weeks ago. Her previous owners told us she had just weaned her pups a few weeks before, and that she was starting to bleed, so she was coming in her heat. They had told us before meeting Beyla that her teets were "hanging" still from the puppies, but that would go away. So she LOOKS like she has had puppies on her fairly recently, but she isn't bagged up at all, so there is no milk.
Beyla has been bleeding since the first day we got her. We have only had a male bull terrier before this, not a female, so I don't know how their heat is suppose to be. What concerns me is that her bleeding seems to be getting worse, and since it started its been bright red, sometimes a dark red, and thick, sometimes stringy, and sometimes leaving "puddles" where she was standing (some as large as 1-2 inches in diameter).
She has not had any discharge, only blood. I am starting to worry that she is not in heat, but something is wrong! I am taking her to the vet tomorrow afternoon but wanted to know your opinions. I may be over reacting, but I am worried about her. She seems fine, she is happy, playful, eats well, drinks plenty of water, and doesn't appear to be uncomfortable, but it's been almost 3 weeks of solid non-stop bleeding and I dont' know if its normal.
I was going to take her to the vet after her heat and have her spade, as we do not intend to breed her, she is our family pet.
Also, how long does it take her teets to go back to "normal"??
Thanks for any help!

Thank you all for your comments.
I am definately taking her to the vet today, now we are more worried than ever since this sounds alarming to you all also.
We paid for her ($550, without registration papers, as we are not going to breed her it wasn't a big deal not having papers).
They gave me documents from her previous vet visits, showing her immunizations, de-worming, and health checks. She had a health check according to the papers, right before she was bred. So, we thought she was healthy and the initial plan was to take her immediately to the vet when we got her and get her spade - but when they brought her, she was bleeding, and as I stated early, they told us she was starting her heat cycle. We thought after a week or so she would't be bleeding much and we would take her to the vet for check up and spading then, but again, she has not stopped bleeding but seems to be getting heavier.
We took there word for that as they were breeders and we do not have the knowledge about a female's heat cycle's after breeding, etc.
Does it sound odd that her teets would be so stretched and loose at this point, and the milk sac area completely flat after weaning? As you know, I am not familiar with "normal" for this situation. Her nipples are also hard dry, even after I put lotion on her belly. (I am afraid they may crack, so thats all I know to do). I also have added fish oil/omega 3 to her diet to soften her skin and have her on a grain free wheat free diet.. Her snout, just above her nose where the skin is pink, is rough and bumpy, looks "dirty" and brown/dark color won't wash off, and I have been putting Emu oil on it. I thought possiblly she was sun-burned? She was outside with her puppies, but we keep her inside.
She is already very special to us and we want to give her the best of care.
Thank you all again!!!

Again, I wouldn't assume anything and I wouldn't beleive all that this breeder is saying. Your best bet would be to have her looked at and assessed by a Vet. I'm glad she's in good hands with you now.

Again, thanks for the replies.
Bulliesofnc, no, I didn't see the puppies. They said she had 10 pups this litter, and 8 pups last litter. They didn't mention any problems and I did ask.
I asked if they would bring her to my house, because I wanted her to feel safe and not surrounded by strangers when she came to our home, and to see how she behaved inside. The young woman seemed to really care a lot about Beyla and was affectionate towards her. Beyla did seem subdued when the man spoke, she lowered her head and layed her ears down, in a submissive posture, and looked up with those eyes. She had marks on her hips, like a dog scuffle, as they also had a few males, they are going away slowly.(they said she was an inside/outside dog, but with the puppies she had to be left outside because they had no room).
Leslie, Her teets are only hard on the "ends", not around the teet itself or anywhere in the area where the milk bag would be.
Do either of you know why her snout/muzzle above her nose would be rough, bumpy and have a dirty stain to it??? Am I putting the right thing on it? Emu oil is a good healing agent for skin ailments, but should I be using something else?
Thank you all for your concern. I couldn't have picked a better bully forum! I think she is beautiful too, inside and out. There has been a hole in my heart since our last bully, it's been 2 years, and Beyla is doing a great job making her own place in our family
Update:
Took Beyla to the vet, and she is NOT in heat. The vet examined her, and she is having drainage/bleeding from what he believes is either part of her placenta that she did not pass after whelping, or a sac a puppy was in was not passed. Either way, she has retained some tissue in her uterus from whelping. He believes she has been bleeding like this since the birth of her pups.
Anemia test showed that she was just a little under normal.
A blood test showed her white blood cell count was slightly higher than normal, he said it likely was not elevated very much because her uterus is draining the blood and pieces of tissue instead of keeping it sealed in.
Vet put her on antibiotics, and we scheduled her spading for Monday, he told us that would take care of the problems she is having right now, and she will be on antibiotic at that time also. Cost will be a bit more due to the blood, but it has to be done!
Her fecal test showed a high scale of hookworms. (I wormed her a week ago myself, but she still had them, probably why she is shedding so much right now). I purchased a $30 worm pill from his office for that.
Her vaccinations were due, so we had all those done, including rabies.
No heart worms, yay! I am starting her on Advantage Multi, monthly topical for fleas and heart worms.
She weighed 48 lbs., and he wants her to gain a little weight, he thought she looked "drawn" around her waist and hips.
I can't figure out if the previous owners knew she was having problems or really thought she was in heat...........
She did not feel well at all when we got home from the vet office. She didn't even want to go outside to potty, walked very slow with her head down, and layed on her bed with her eyes closed, not moving for several hours. I am not sure if it is the immunizations or the de-worming pill. But, I think she is feeling better now, she seems a bit more like herself.
I did try to call the previous owners, no answer, so I sent a text message about what has happened with Beyla. I have not had a response.
So nice to communicate with you all. Thanks again for the support.
Serious mind blow here!!
Sounds just like a situation i was in back in around june of last year.
i took in a female named Sadie, she was 3-4 years old and sued as a puppy machine. she was in terrible shape-just like your girl! with a good diet, excersie, some trianing and some love she turned into an AMAZIN dog who found an amazing family! i get updates often and she sounds and loks wonderful!
i would personally just have her spayed ASAP,
Sadie was also bleeding when she came to me-though my vet did confirm a normal heat, she bled alot and she was sagging horribly. here are some before and after photos of her-i had her with me from june till october.
The last picture of Sadie is from just a few weeks ago in her new home.
Your doing an amazing thing taking this girl in and giving her a great home! you should be very proud of yourself!
xchairity - Wow! Sadie could be Beyla's sister! They look a lot alike! Great she found YOU and has a good life!
xtracho - I am glad to take care of her, she gives back with her heart 100%
She is the one we have been waiting for.
A question, she had diaherra this morning, that is from the hookworm pill, right? Thanks.

BulliesofNC - I have not had a response to the text I sent them yesterday, probably won't. That have the money I paid them for Beyla, and obviously thats all they care about. >:P
I believe they should pay at LEAST half of the $320 vet bill, but at least she is out of there, and she has a great family and will have a healthy, happy life. I am just praying she has no problems or issues until she is spayed or afterwards.
Note: I have been spelling "spayed" wrong, as I am sure you know! sorry
Try and find some way to hang a red flag over their method of advertising to make sure no other beautiful BT gets abused and BT lovers get raped.

Leslie - Thank you! Will look at our Tractor Supply and local feed store.
(Check out Beyla's nails! She had a manicure tonight! She watched me very intently painting her nails, she loved it! Just look at that smile on her face! :x She is feeling better than yesterday.)
Some news for you guys, I recieved a call this evening from Beyla's owners.......surprised me, but they apologized and said they had no idea she was having problems, that she had started bleeding the day before I got her....... I told them everything the vet said, and that I was upset that she had not been taken care of. They insisted they did not know and she had not been bleeding until right before I got her......And that before Beyla was bred, she had been checked at a vet's for worms and had been clear of worms...They said they would send money on a M.O. for half the medical bill.
I dont' know if they knew she was having problems or not, but I would like to think they would have taken care of her if they had. And I dont' know if they will send half the vet bill, but it's paid in full and Beyla is being taken care of, either way.
And I don't know where they advertise at or if they have any other females....... Initially, I had called another person about another bully on an online ad, and the person said they had already sold their dog, told me about Beyla and had the owners call me. They sent pics, etc.
The love you all have for bully's and their welfare is awesome! ^:)^

I agree, of course, that Beyla had "paid her dues" to the previous owners and helped them financially (Total of 18 pups = $$$ for them!), and the "right" thing to do was give her a good life if they weren't going to breed her. Thank goodness they didn't try to let her come in heat and breed again! She would not hav survived another pregnancy, in my opinion.
But, when we met her, she was so gentle, had the sweetest spirit and that look in her eyes.....she just wanted to be loved, and tries to please everyday. I connected with her immediately, I was just drawn to her and felt I already knew her. When she walked up to me with her ears down, eyes looking up, and slowly put her forehead against my chest and just stood there, so still...... she relaxes with us and plays with us, not too demanding but demanding enough we know she is a bull terrier!......Her disposition and energy level is perfect for us......I would have given twice the money for her.
I have tried several times to adopt a bull terrier from the rescue here, have actually tried to give a home to 3 of them, at seperate times of course. Kept each one for at least a month, trying to make it work, and heartbroken when it didn't. One of them was never kept inside, and he just simply had no manners, on the table, jumping up to counters and getting anyting and everything off, chewing my couch.....the list goes on. and we worked with him so hard, house training one of them was impossible, and when he huckelbutted he broke something daily, he was very high strung..... my husband finally said "our home is not a dog toilet and we can't keep replacing what he breaks". The last one was so food aggressive that small children could not even have a cookie around her, and she attacked my daughters dog when they were visiting - and they were being closely supervised. She was not tolerant of kids or other dogs. Of course, we got attached to all of them.
I was afraid I would never find another bully like our George, the first one we owned. I think we were meant to have Beyla, I know that sounds corny, but we had about given up and thought probably there was not another out there that would fit in with our family. And then there she was! :x
Zerlett - Did I read "More photos please?"........that's like asking a parent if they have more photos of their only child! LOL
Photos of Beyla's new life, don't have to ask me twice, LOL! I'm sure I will post more pics than I should but I am crazy about her! 8-}
About the pics, Beyla kept tearing of the "diaper" that I made for her (because of the bleeding), she doesn't know quite what to think of the pool, she loves the horses (I think she believes they are over-grown bull terriers because of their long heads, lol), her favorite toy is her Zebra, she loves our daily walks, loves her bed, and she really likes our Australian Shephered pup,( that stays outside by the way, its her choice - she hates it in the house, we kept her inside the first month we had her, but she loves being outside (we bring her in at night to sleep in her kennel when its cold
I think Beyla is happy, I know we are!

Thanks you guys!
I know I sound all mushy and crazy......at least that's what my friends and family think! LOL But, I am happy, and I have been waiting sooooo long to find her. ;;)
I love that you all seem to understand where I am coming from, there are SO many people that ask me "why would you want a dog like that? They look so mean! Aren't you afraid she is going to attack someone or another animal?". I try to tell them they all have their own personality, and they are naturally loving at heart......it's all how they are raised (which why the ones we tried to adopt didn't work out, all adults and not taught correctly, not given the attention, and at 3+ years old, was hard for us to redo who they were, at least it was hard for us.)
I also don't see the "mean" they see, I see how beautiful they are! Although I do know that some have issues, that is whith ANY breed! Which I blame whoever has raised them, just my opinon......I see the constant smile on Beyla's face, the need to please in her eyes, her heart that is bigger than her body will every be, I admire her build and imagine how she will look when she is completely healthy, and I smile every time I see her amazing bully head shape that makes her so original and endearing.....if they could only see that bullies are lap dogs in a muscular body! :-w
My husband appreciates them, he isn't so completely absorbed as I am, but he even says our house doesn't feel like a home without one! =D>
I agree, it is knowing each one's individual personality and providing proper supervision when you know what their quirks are! The "how their raised" comment was mostly about their manners, and personality plays alot into it also. My daughter was bitten in the FACE by a cocker spaniel when she was 3 years old, at her babysitters house! That was lack of supervision by the baby sitter and not properly accessing her quirks. Because she told all us moms that the dog "loved kids" and was not a danger at all.
She has permanent scars and her lip was completely ripped down the middle. Doctors did a good job of patching her up so that they aren't very noticeable, but as they were healing they looked awful. Stiches on her lips, her cheek, above her eye. A sweet little cocker spaniel........Really???????? Not so much.
