Talking Bullies

I wanted to know if forum members had any thoughts on Bull Terrier vocal communication ability.?? Our last girl had a very responsive "speaking" sounds. If you placed your head near hers and made humming, grunting, cooing, sighing sounds, she would mimic them with uncanny accuracy ( obviously we repeated the ones she could closely replicate... ) but it was a very close, different form of communication. But it was always responsive, never initiated by her. My son's giant schnauzer howls magnificently, even mimicking the chords of "happy birthday", and everyone wants him to sing along at their birthdays. But that's howling and responsive again. Our current pair of 13 week old siblings has a guy who talks all the time. ( I don't know how many of you are old enough to remember) the sound of the old dolls "mama" voice box, every time you turned dolls over they made this guttural "mama" sound... Well he makes that sound exactly and many other communicative sounds, uninitiated !!, just to get a message, normally of happiness ( to see you, to be picked up) He tries to communicate with this combination of "talk" sounds.....all the time
I've never heard of any dog besides a bully speak this way.... Anyone else?

  • I love when bullies talk. Casper (our oldest) will hum back at you if you hold her close and talk to her.

Kimba (the daughter) has also started this as well or just making whines/hums when she wants to talk. Kimba also likes to greet us by running up wagging her tail and making a funny low growl sometimes (definitely different from her aggressive ones). In the mornings when its her turn to come out she makes "chubacca" noises lol

Thanks for fixing it for me! I dont know why, but ive been computer "lazy" lately, or rather computer "dumb"
  • Bianca is pretty vocal, we LOVE it it's so cute when she 'talks' to us! Every night i practically get in her crate with her to give her bedtime loves and have a chat about what a good girl she is. If she goes in and i don't immediately follow she grumbles at me and won't settle down until we have our bedtime snuggles and chat!

Exactly ... The love pillow talk is what they love the most... and they can go on and on responding

  • Another funny Bull Terrier habit. They have so many quirks.
Many EBT's are rarely barking, but other than that most of them seem to be pretty vocal.
Starting with snoring, grunting over humming and all kinds of "doggie talk".

Djamila "talks" when my husband scolds her for being in the way in the kitchen when he cooks. I really hope I will be able to catch it on video some day. She makes some "dog talking noise" I really can't describe, but it looks and sounds insanely cute when she does it.

The other day she came to me into the office after he had scolded her and made that noise just as if she was telling me what just happened. Too funny.

  • Roxy our last Bully was known for her mix of grumbling/humming all her moods, happy, mad, hungry and lovey dovey, all very distinct and extremely amusing, especially to company. Ironically she was not much of a barker.

Frankie on the other hand is a loud mouth barker, no grumbling or humming just a strange loud sigh when settling in to sleep.

  • There's some funny videos on Youtube on the talking Bull Terriers. I've never had a dog be so vocal. Maya will bark one or two times when she wants something, but if she knows she's not getting it she resorts to the grumbling/groaning noises.
  • Is anyone fluent in Snore???????

If by "fluent" you mean, once the inevitable snoring sets in, Djamila has to "flow" out of the bedroom, we sure are. :))
We've really tried to let her sleep with us, because she loves it and we love to have her close. But most of the time at some point during the night it's becoming just impossible to sleep, only because of her snoring. That's were this cartoon illustration of mine originated from.

Funny how Bullies are different (great cartoon Djammy)... Ours don't fart and they don't snore... But they do dream and stutter, talk and jerk, and yelp in their dreams.... I wonder what the differences mean.??

    Thanks! :)

Well, that's actually not too different. Because Djamila does all of that too in addition to her snoring and more occasional farting.
She's also running in her dreams sometimes. Those dreams must be so vivid. I'd give something to be able to ask my dog about a few different things - among them what she's dreaming of.
  • @Djammy the cartoon is adorable!  That's exactly why I had to get Cyrus a bigger bed!  When he sleeps all stretched out the snoring is okay, but as soon as he gets into his crate the volume goes up!  He is one of the quiet types, but he "talks" to us by snoring.  Snorts when he wants my attention, or food ( mostly food ) even when he wakes me up.  Just one big lovable snoring farty bum  :)

    Thanks! :)

I just remembered that we managed to capture Djamila's snoring one evening ... and the funny way she sleeps while we watch TV almost every evening. Sometimes she wakes up with imprints of the the bars she is leaning against in her face :))

Sorry for the noisy TV in the background. We were afraid she'd wake up, if we turned it down for the video. She's sound asleep and would not bother a train passing her. Yet, as soon as we change the soundscape to silent, she'd be waking up.

LMAO. She looked completely zonked out.

  • Hahaha, love that spotted belly!
  • My Katie is a tremendous talker and snorer.  I'm allowed to have her at work, and she sits behind me on her bed in a corral.  Every time someone comes by she'll talk at them.  The first few times I had to reassure people she wasn't growling, it's just her particular vocalizations.  Now they just love her, and try to get her to talk more to them.

The snoring is dreadful, but I got a white noise machine that plays rain sounds, and I turn it up high when I go to bed.  It helps me sleep when she makes noises like a foghorn.
  • Nice idea with the white noise machine. Gotta think about that for my husband, who's often troubled with finding sleep.
  • This is the one I use:

I'm not sure I'd recommend it, because after two months it has started to act funny - volume goes up and down, or sound is muffled.  But at least it's a start.
  • It sure is! Thanks for the info!  :)
