Well, I thought I'd provide an update on the Victor food I've been using for quite a while now. I must say I am very impressed with it. The dogs love it and they are as healthy and active as can be. Normally I provide them with the Victor Grain Free All Stages which is awesome. Now the feed store I go to received in Victor Grain Free Salmon and Sweet Potato. Ohhh, the Bullies are in heaven!!!

  • Nice, Steve. The pet store about 30 minutes from me right below San Francisco has them at $39.99 a 40 lb bag. I have Spud on Blue Buffalo Wilderness Puppy Kibble along with glucosamine w/ Chondroitin with salmon oil. I plan on getting the nuvet supplement when I have enough for a years supply.

I'd like to move on from BB to a more affordable kibble such as TOTW 30 lb or Victors 40lb which are both $39.99 in my area. What do you prefer? Also, how will it affect his potty habits with a slow transition? Reason I ask is the couple I got the pup from had him on very bad kibble early which I changed at 14 weeks to BB. The transition took 1-2 weeks for normal stool. I don't want to put Spud in that situation again moving to another kibble when BB has worked well but is pricey.

I actually prefer the Victor Grain Free over TOTW. It's got higher ratings, a little bit better nutritional value, and the dogs love eating it.

I'm not sure if the GRAIN FREE brand of Victor comes in a 40 pound bag. If it does they don't sell it where I go. Both the Grain Free All Stages Victor and the Grain Free Salmon and Sweet Potato come in a 30 bag. It costs me $46 for one bag. I'm sure the local feed store I go to isn't the cheapest around either.

  • I cant believe how much cheaper u guys get dog food im paying 50 pound english money 13 kg totw why is this x

@Philsergeant - No, Victor has actually never given birth. Just kidding.
Victor's "All Stages" is what they produce for both puppies and adults. The nutritional values needed for puppies are incorporated in this line.

  • So would you say that's the best for puppy's and adults @bulliesofnc
  • BulliesofNCBulliesofNC Richlands, NC
When dealing with other 5 star grain free foods it's very difficult to tell which is the best. Sometimes it isn't all about which ones have the VERY best nutritional value as it is which one creates the right blend of taste that the dogs will eat sufficient amounts of to ensure weight management.

Right now I'm sticking with Victor Grain Free because I know my dogs are doing great with it and they enjoy the taste of it.

  • I've had my pup on Victor grain free also and so far he likes it. If I add a tiny bit of warm water to it to throw off an aroma he usually scoffs it all down quickly. I'm probably about halfway through my first bag.
  • I use Victor also all six of my dogs love it ages 13 years to 8 months.

  • I got TOTW Canyon Canine Formula for Spud to start next week. He is now eating less and less at 5 months and I'm thinking of switching to feeding twice a day next week during the transition to TOTW. Anyone think this should be fine?

I'm not familiar with that, is it wet or dry? Do you have a picture, or link? He should be on puppy until about 16 months.

I gave him about 5-10 percent for dinner along with his Blue Buffalo Wilderness Puppy and his stool was solid but one half was normal and the other a little softer. No gas so far and he's got lots of energy right now and seems fine other than our heat wave where he's in front of the fan or drinking his ice water.
  • philsergeantphilsergeant Palm City, Florida, USA
That stool is about normal for his age... He will always pick up stuff... Leaves, frogs, lizards, treats, pond water, chew toys, and the amount of " foreign" will always make the second 1/3 softer...

  • Lol, I've seen a few pieces of grass, some string, small pieces of paper. Hoping to curb that early but he isn't chewing as much now his adult teeth are coming in.

As for the TOWT he really liked it. I'm gonna slowly integrate that into his diet then do some of the puppy food in the future. I really like the cost of TOTW and the fact they have so many flavors.
  • I thought TOTW's all life stages just changed to their 'adult' but kept the same formula? Just introducing the puppy at that time as more of a marketing gimmick and maybe a slightly less calcium content for larger breed dogs. Also some added vitamins.
  • The Southwest Canyon Canine and one other are all life stages. I will be slowly mixing this with Spud's Blue Buffalo Wilderness Puppy food until I'm out of it, which is around 2 more weeks left. I'll likely try another flavor after a while.

So I know the answer is probably no, but I will ask anyway.

Has anyone tried Grandma Lucys dog food? It's freeze dried/GF. It's usually pricey stuff. I can get it for a steal. I've been seeing at this store I drop into sometimes that deals with a lot of distributors. Every time I see this food it makes me curious. They send him a whole variety of dog food. The catch is, it's closer to expiry date when they send to him which is why they don't send it to the regular pet stores. Before I got my boy I remember seeing bags of Orijen there for dirt cheap. It's unpredictable what he has in stock. He gets random shipments of all kinds of stuff in. Sometimes he has a lot of great stuff and other times he's just wiped out. All depends on what they are shipping.

I remember him having the chicken and the lamb formulas in stock. I may try and mix with Victor and just adjust the amounts according to cals per cup. This stuff has around 1/3 more cal/cup so I would balance it out that way.

I've never tried it but it gets good ratings from what I've read on http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/grandma-lucys-pureformance/

The main meat ingredient in the one they tested was rabbit which obviously has a high protein count. They have other types that offer different meat ingredients.

Their Grain Free dry kibble earned a 4 1/2 star rating which is real good too.

  • I'm glad to see this thread come back to light and I see you feed Victors to your Bullies Steve...

I guess we have Stoeger on the right kibble!
  • Yea there's not much info about it around. The only complaint some people have is the fact that it's cooked first then freeze dried. Oh and the cost.
  • Seems like some of you are on Victor's GF. I am running out of my Pacific Stream TOTW and my local hay feed can special order Victor's so I got a 15 lb bag of the Yukon Salmon and Sweet Potato recipe for $26.

Just curios to see if anyone has any experience with it?
  • Stoeger is on victors grain free is does very well with it!

I buy it locally at a feed and grain shop about 4 miles away that stocks all the top name foods. Right now I'm using the Grain Free All Stages.

So they don't have a "puppy" by the looks of it... I think I'll get some of each and start to blend it in to the TOTW and finally shift over.

  • How much is it and for how many lbs.????

Well it's most all life stages. My local feed and grain has to special order them but they get them at the price most places offer it. For the 15lb is $25 or $46 for 30 lb plus tax. I ordered the grain free Yukon salmon and sweet potato meal, which is all life stages since Spud has some issues with red meat.

So far this is his food schedule:

Monday-Sunday breakfast: 2 cups grain free kibble TOTW Pacific
Tues-Thurs-Sat dinner: 1 cup grain free kibble plus 1 cup wet grain free dog food TOTW
M-W-F-Sun dinner: 1-2 lbs of raw chicken or turkey (breasts, quarters, wings, etc.)

So far since the start of October Spuds been getting very healthy and his coat is looking amazing. He's gaining around 2 lbs a month on this diet and currently sits at 49 lbs at 11 months. The couple I got him from said no more than 45 lbs but I'm assuming its because they had him on a poor diet.

Phil - The "All Stages" is perfectly suited for puppies based on the ingredients needed for puppies. Read up on the "All Stages" and compare it to another puppy food of your choice.

  • We do victors and have the active dog puppy grain free. Stoges dad orders it off the Internet so I'm not sure of the price. We would have to special order it if we wanted to buy locally and kev is good at finding it online cheaper, even including shipping.

  • I tried Apollo on the Victor but he didn't like it. It seemed he was getting tired of the TOTW too, so I did a slow switch to BBW. He didn't like that either. So armed with my phone and dogfoodadvisor, I went through every grain free food at Petsmart. I picked up Simply Nourish grain free puppy. I had overlooked it a few times thinking it was that Rachel Ray dog food. When I saw that it wasn't and DFA gave it a 4 out of 5 I bought it. Apollo loves it! He doesn't even have gas anymore!!! But, I also found out two days ago it's Petsmart brand food. Has anyone else tried this food???
  • Stoeger used to be picky when he was younger and I poured a little chicken broth over and since then I've never had a problem getting him to eat anything! After a couple times I started just water to soften and no more broth and he is fine. Just an idea!
  • I think we spoiled Apollo. We were putting different bits of food in his bowl with his kibble. ie: scrambled egg, sliced apple, puppy patty, aka- homemade hamburger. Now the little turkey wants something added every time. I was adding a bit of water to the kibble and made joyful/happy sounds while I stirred it. He thought he was getting something awesome. He'd look at me like "hey, where's the rest?" when I put it down. LMAO!!! I'll have to remember the chicken broth tip!!!!! Thank you! He seems to really like this Simply Nourish. I was just curious if anybody else tried it.
  • What kibble do people in australia use?
  • I haven't a clue :( sorry no help here :(

  • See from all recommendations Iv put Thor on Blue Wilderness grain free large breed puppy food and the only reason iv done so is vet and everyone has told me it is one of the best and the reason for large breed puppy food is because Blue reps say anything that get bigger then 50 pounds is considered large breed in Blue Wilderness food if that makes sense lol
  • Hey guys I just came across a coupon code for 25% off orijen on petango. I don't think the code is going to be up for much longer. I know some of you are curious about it but don't want to shell out the cash. Can get adult formula for about 60 shipped for 28lb.

The code is BDORIJEN. I just ordered a bag
