Well I've decided to try weaning our current litter of puppies on Taste of the Wild (Venison and Bison) verse Royal Canin puppy food. As much as my adult Bullies love the Taste of the Wild (Pacific) I thought it may be beneficial to see how puppies would do with a puppy food made by the same company. Royal Canin has always been very good and kept the puppies at optimal weighs without having any food allergy problems or having any puppies turn away from eating it.

  • Steve, I switched Daisy to this because she wasn't real crazy about the Royal Canin after a few months.  Her eating had really slowed down to the point where I was concerned she wouldn't be getting enough to grow to her full potential.  Once I changed her to the puppy formula  of TOTW, Daisy began eating well again.

Mary, what flavor do you have daisy on? I called TOTW to see if they consider sponsoring us with Puppy Packages and they agreed. But they were limited on the salmon flavor which is what I originally wanted, so they sent me 30 packages of Roasted Venison & Bison. However, the puppies seem to be doing really well on it.

Are you supplementing Daisy with other things like meat and veggies? I think she'd benefit it you provided her with some raw meats as well since she's in that lanky teenage stage. One of puppy owners of Daisy's sibling called me the other day telling me he has his Bullie on Blue Buffalo with salmon oil and gives him one ball of a raw meat recipe I gave him and his dog is already 62 pounds and very muscular.

I'm starting to prefer the TOTW puppy food especially when I've had really good success with using it with the adults. I think I may try the salmon flavored one next time only because I know the adults prefer it over the other flavors. But for now the puppies are loving this Venison and Bison.

  • The store only stocks the venison/bison, so that is what I have gotten for her.  I supplement all 3 dogs with your recommendation of Grizzly Salmon Oil and Nupro Gold.  I make the Nupro Gold into a gravy for the dry, and they love it.   I haven't given her raw meat, but all 3 dogs share my cooked meat at dinner.   They sit and wait for their turn to get a little bit.  Bad habit, I know!  Now my dirty little secret is out there.

Sounds like you have Daisy on a really good diet. The pups seems to be really liking the venison and bison TOTW so I'm not at all disappointed because I know it's really good for them. The Nupro Gold and Grizzly Oil has shown great result s for my Bullies for years and Im confident it will do justice for Daisy.

  • I have two really stinky dogs and i mean clear a room stinky @-) they are on totw roasted venison and byson and I switch to the fish one every other time. It seems they have the runs a lot and I feed few table scraps. My female is allergic to chicken so I'm limited with what I can get as their food is out all day and they eat when they want. I thought about trying a grain food to see if I can help them be less stinky:/ I found a food called Bornfree and has anyone ever tried this? They do have a grain free as well but I was wanting to try the grain and see if it's makes a difference. I fed Blue before I got my male in a grain and my female did well but I'm feeding 2 now and that's 50 $ a bag now. I did get that again when totw became scares for a bit with the recall but my male didn't care for it. Any ideas anyone or knowledge of Bornfree.

The only time we've ever noticed gas from any of our bullies was during times we'd change up their diet. Additionally, any time a neighbor, friend, or relative would come to the house and provide one of our dogs some table scraps it would result in gas about an hour later. I have never experienced any problems with the dogs getting gas from TOTW or Blue Buffalo. However, every dogs digestive system is different.

I've never used Bornfree and haven't heard anything about that brand of food. If it's got good ingredients it's always worth a try to see how your dogs do on it. Have you ever tried using Royal Canin? I used Royal Canin for years with all our puppy litters and loved it. I switched to Taste of the Wild on our last 2 litters to see if the puppies would benefit from TOTW verse Royal Canin. Although I love the TOTW for our adults we have decided to go bck to Royal Canin for the puppies. I didn't see any beneficial gains when we switched to TOTW puppy food and noticed that the puppies didn't have near the desire to eat the food as past litters had when eating Royal Canin. With this said I know for fact that weening a litter of puppies on Royal Canin verse TOTW creates more of an appetite for them since they're less finicky about eating resuling in eating larger portions and gaining more weight. Again, the TOTW was perfctly fine but th Royal Canin seems to do better during the early weening stages and puppy stages.

Many people will critize all kinds of foods other than what they feed their dog or dogs but my feelings are to conduct individual comparisons themselves to see which food provides the best nutrition, digests appropriately, keeps their dog at optimal weight standards, and has the taste in which the dogs enjoys to eat. It doesn't make sense to force a dog to eat a food they don't like and done consume much of just because it's "supposed" to be the best. In all reality this could in fact be an unhealthy choice since the dogs food intake may minimize and weight loss can occur.

Try the Bornfree and see if you get positive results. I recommend you try Royal Canin as well since you're not having much luck with the grain free dry foods.

  • I haven't tried royal canine However I have a friend that feeds that but she also feeds blue among others together so she wouldn't be of any help for questions on the food. The name of that food is Earthborn not bornfree my mistake:/ they have holistic with grain and grain free. Does the royal Cainine make both as well?? The store employees rave about this food but again like you said they sell it!! I wouldn't be concerned if just one dog was gassy but it's both and Brutus lately has the runs a lot which I am concerned about.

There are so many different dogs foods out there and most of them I've never tried feeding my dogs. I think most of the good dogs foods gain their reputation from positive results from several people who spread the word. I have yet to hear about Earthborn but I can say Royal Canin is very popular and supported by AKC as a sponsor.

  • Exactly and I know you have raised them for years so I figured this would be a good place to start to try to find a new brand. I think I'm going to compare ingredients and go from their I do appreciate the info and your thoughts I just bought another bag of totw so I will be able to gradually make this transition and see what they like and what they don't. Thanks:)

  • I tried royal canin the other day, bought a bag of medium puppy, right away i noticed the food was really oily or shiny in comparison to most foods i choose to feed, i dont like the corn ingredient in it, i was just trying it to see if claxxton will eat it, hes a picky eater and didnt like it, i fed it to another dog and after this dog show im putting food down and picking it up in 15 minutes! tired of the food games with him. I have tried a thousand dog foods it seems, i have heard of earthborn, its good stuff, along with all the other good stuff! at my store they have foods sectioned off from less nutritious to more nutritious and royal cannin doesnt score too high, on dogfoodanalysis.com it doesn't there, either. the dog foods i've tried is damn near everything on the food market, if its on sale at my job, hell i will give it a go!

  • My dogs really like TOTW, but I've had them on other things like Solid Gold, etc., and they enjoyed that as well.  Well, Daisy hasn't but the others are 3 years old and have been exposed to other brands.  The JRT is never gaseous, but the Bullies are very stinky. Not only do you smell it, but they sound like a Mel Brooks comedy.
  • Daisy is your bullies stools firm?
Your actions speak so loudly I cannot hear your words.
  • Yes, they have normal stools.
  • Jinx has been having skin issues. He has these bumps under his fur and his feet are broken out and have sores from where he has been chewing on them. We were feeding him Purina One but we have switched him to TOTW to see if his diet is the issue. Fingers crossed he will start to clear up in a few weeks!

  • We feed our Adult Bullies Taste of the Wild and all of our puppies are raised with Blue Buffalo/Wilderness.  It really is a preference to each individual and if your dog has any kind of alergies.  The best thing anyone can do for thier pet it to keep it grain free.

  • Jinx has been on TOTW less than a week and we can already see a MAJOR difference. His belly is not red any more and the bumps that were all over him are going away.

The crazy thing is that when we first saw that he was breaking out I took him to the vet...they told me that he was allergic to the grass, gave me antibiotics and steroids to give him, and told me that the food I was feeding him was fine. I love our vet, but they obviously are not educated enough about Bull Terriers.
  • BulliesofNCBulliesofNC Richlands, NC
You're absolutely right and most Vets will be quick to prescribe some costly medications which do little to solve the problem. The next time you have to visit your vet you may wish to school him on food allergies and the effects of grain on some breeds of canine.

As many of you have probably figured out by name I'm always on the look out for new foods to try that have a good reputation for health and quality. Today I was at my local feed store and the owner and I were talking about 5 star rated dry dog foods. They sell MANY brands of food and you could get lost in their warehouse. I've used Blue Buffalo Wilderness for years now along with Taste of the Wild and Royal Canin all of which I like. I can't say I like the Royal Canin adult food as much as the other two brands but I can contest that their puppy food does great during the early weening stages of a puppies life. I actually prefer it over TOTW or Blue Buffalo. However, I can't say the same for the adult versions of the food. TOTW receives a 4.5 star and Blue Buffalo Wilderness has earned a 5 star rating through "Dog Food Advisor."

Today I was turned on to another 5 star food called Victor Grain Free. I was told it's even better than Blue Buffalo because it has been proven to keep the dogs' coat really healthy and prevent excessive shedding. I really don't have much of a shedding problem with my Bullies but I couldn't resist trying this food since I've always stuck to what I knew worked great. However, I figured I give this food a try and see how it goes. I'm sure my Bullies will enjoy a little change up in their diet in regard to their dry food.

Another nice factor about this food is that it's setup for both puppies and adults so there's no need to change foods as one gets into adulthood. One bag of Victor Grain Free food (30 lbs) cost me $35.00 which is actually less then TOTW or Blue Buffalo.

I'll keep you updated on how things go with this dog food in comparison to my normal foods I've always provided my Bullies.

  • omg i love this food! i must buy it !
  • the closest dealer is an hour away =(
  • Right now I have my boy on NV: Instinct, but he did the best on Dogwell's Nutrisca. That food has been by far the easiest to transition to, and the one that he has had the most consistent stool quality with. The only downside is it's a bit pricey, but it works great since he seems to have sensitivity to potatos.

Also for gas and the occasional runny stress poo, I've used plain organic yogurt. Not only is the fat good for skin and coat, but when fed by itself his gas typically clears in about 24 hours, and it's even faster when combined with a probiotic.

Also has anyone tried Precise Holistic Complete Grain Free? I would love to feed this food to Dozer, but it's not available in Las Vegas unless I special order it. I really like the supplements it adds that I found a lot of the limited ingredient diets and grain free diets didn't have. Now that Petflow has finally started to carry it I'm considering switching since I really love the samples of it I got at Super Zoo last year.

    UPDATE:

Ok, it's been a month since we switched foods to Victor Grain Free. I must say I really like this food. Our Bullies really love it and their energy level is fantastic. I have seen no negative faults in regard to stool, shedding, appetite, weight loss, etc.

I plan to continue with this brand and love everything I read about its nutritional value. I also plan on weaning our next litter of puppies with this food. I will provide results when that time comes.

  • im so jealous, would love to feed it, such a great price!! Very economical!!
  • Steve: have you fed Victor to any puppies yet? I was almost ready to order another bag of TOTW for my pup but a different flavor (salmon) when I remembered Victor. Lately TOTW seems like a chore for him to eat the amount I'd like him to. He's very active and just seems he's not eating as much as he should be.

@Stvy - That is exactly why I no longer ween puppies with TOTW. For some reason they won't consume the volume of food as they will with Royal Canin or some other brands. I don't know if it's that they're not that fond of the bison and venison flavor or what. Unfortunately, I can not get the salmon Puppy TOTW so I can compare the two.

I would be lying if I told you that we have weened a litter with "Victor All Stages Grain Free." I was going to but changed my mind. In all reality I would use that food without hesitation. My only dilemma I have about doing so is the fact that when the puppies turn 8 weeks of age and go to their new homes the owners may be in an area where that particular brand of puppy food can not be found which forces them to utilize a whole different food which they aren't used to while at the same time the puppy is also getting used to being away from his siblings and getting used to a new living environment. To me, it's enough on a puppy getting used to the changes of leaving an area he was used to let alone completely change his diet without being able to do it gradually.

Would I use it otherwise? Absolutely. Victor Grain Free All Stage is extremely good food.

Now for the puppies I raise as my own - They are on Victor and doing excellent.

Craig and Terri from Bullies of NC Jacksonville use Blue Buffalo and they always have plump healthy puppies as well.

In the event you have access to Victor I highly encourage you to try it with your puppy. In the event you find that your puppy is a little more finicky than the average puppy should be try putting a couple squirts of Grizzly Oil on the food which they love. Additionally, you can always put a couple spoonfuls of quality canned food mixed in the food.

I'm happy with the TOTW for our 6 month pups... I give them 70% venison/bison & 30% salmon puppy... But the dry is only 30% of their total mix.... They can't get enough and still do back flips at breakfast and dinner....they get bout 5 cups each time..... I know many owners try to get their dogs on dry food only, because, understandably, it's quicker and cheaper.... But I am always fearful that won't give them the ultimate gain.... Does anyone think dry alone will do the job?

So Steve I'm going to try victor grain free... See how she does... Will have to wait until we are half way done with this bag, bought yesterday..... So will update a lil later!
  • Tigress grew tired of TOTW so I have switched her and Izzabell to Victor dry.  Both are eating it like crazy.  Karamel and Isis like TOTW better though.  They all get Grizzly oil and Nupro Gold daily along with TOTW wet food.  Lucian does not care which kind.  Loves them all.

  • I ordered a bag of Victor last night. I'll give you guys some feedback after he has been on it for a couple steady weeks.

@philsergeant You are saying your pups eat 5 cups each a day? That's definitely more than what my guy is taking in. He is somewhere in the low 40lb. range by now. I'm going to weigh him later. I plan on speaking with some local meat markets & small family owned markets in my area about maybe working out some kind of deal to buy raw meat in bulk for myself. I do plan on having at least some raw in his diet in the near future

We used to have Royal Canine Puppy mixed in with TOTW and then phased it out... I think that was a mistake because they loved RC.... They haven't got tired of TOTW at all yet.... But then again they are still at the age that they'd rather give up on people, than give up on food!
