Over confidence and no submission

Lately I've been having trouble with bigger and older dogs around Spud because when they play he won't submit at all. He will play and wrestle for a long time. He hasn't had any issues yet where he has gotten hurt when I let him wrestle and play with the big dogs but for example my trainers alpha dog who basically trains and manages dogs during class has a hard time getting Spud to submit. My trainer said Spud's one of the only dogs to give his Shepard/lab mix a while and I've seen his dog handle many dogs before and get them calm.

I fear that this may get worse and when Spud gets older and dogs won't tolerate him because they do now because he's a puppy. He said just getting him to submit myself would work. Anyone have any thoughts?

  • If you hold spud on his side untill he calms would be submission, I wouldn't expect a puppy to submit to another dog at his age though. They just wanna play and I wouldn't worry about aggressive issues unless he's showing signs of aggression. I took cleo to puppy class and their was an English Bulldog named Trucker in their and the two of them were so into each other we had to stand on opossite sides of the room to get them to do anything let alone submit. When it came to recall as soon as their leashes were dropped they went straight for eachother!!!!! All I can say is hes not a lab or a German shepherd he's a Bull Terrier and he just wants to have fun and if it isn't fun he's not gonna do it. Maybe someone else will have more better advise here!!!

I have similar problems with over enthusiasm. They will never submit because they just want to keep playing and submission doesn't enter into it. You have got to just determine when the other dogs have had enough and make Spud quit and take him out of the fray, nicely... Teach him a new word, "ENOUGH"... and he'll accept it after a while.

  • Yea, at his last class yesterday the trainers dog was getting him to finally submit even though it took a few. Took him to the park this morning and he did wrestle with another dog he was more calm this time. He's actually been more calm from bringing him to the park almost 1-2 times a day.

I will likely keep this up for a while to get him to calm down and socialize properly. Making him submit has been easier now as well and he isn't quick to pull his teeth out in fear. Even though when he use to snap at my fingers he wouldn't even bite hard at all, it was more of a light touch.

    Yes,
Until their  high energy is discharged by a daily workout they are harder to teach and behave.

  • He's calmed down with his consistent wrestling. He still nips at other dogs ears and cheeks but I understand he's still a puppy. I'm hoping the constant play at the park along with larger dogs and discipline he will eliminate it with time.

If he reaches 8 months and is still being a naughty bugger you'll probably need to use a prong training collar. Lets hope not.

  • I still ocassionally have to bust my prong out as Brutus " forgets " how he'd suppose to act.
