Why do some people judge a book by its Cover? Bully =(

edited July 2013 in General

I just got my little baby terrier his name is chucho he is adorable, the biggest cuddle bug in the world. I took him for a walk and I got so much negative comments. That he was a bad dog, that the breed was a deadly one ect. I was very upset and I gave it back to them! I did a google search and the same comments popped up there was so much negativity "people that have terriers should burn in hell fall in a hole" ect.

Its awful I love my pup and I believe your dog will be the way you raise or train him to be.. Has anyone else experienced this negativity?

Comments

  • Some what. They are very energetic and can scare lots of people but that doesn't make them bad dogs. There's a few at the local park here that won't allow my dog near them because they claim to "not want it around their dog .. Or that its too aggressive to be around other," when clearly my dog takes no interest in theirs. I've since moved to another park where everyone's been more than accepting.

It's probably the people. The miseducated and ignorant. I'd just ignore it if you can.
  • I would assume they were confusing the EBT with a pit bull. Regardless ignorance is everwhere the only way to squash it is education and unfortunately you can't fix stupid or you can lead a Bull Terrier to water but you can't make it swim:/ if I were you I would arm myself with knowledge and give these people a run for their money!!!! Or simply tell them your dog in not aggressive and ask them if theirs is!!!!!!
Your actions speak so loudly I cannot hear your words.
  • does he look dangerous! =( He looks like a gorgeous harmless baby! =( IGNORANCE IS BLISS =(

Unfortunately this human (in)ability is what pervades most aspects of life and society these days... It's called self-indulgent ignorance. These people are quick to judge and form opinions ( about just about everything in their lives ) ... By short snap intakes of what they heard fourth hand from some other ignoramus, rather than researching or reading anything significant. Shake the park dust off your feet and move on with confidence that ONLY YOU have the right dog, and they could never match that. Peasants!
In the beginning God created English Bull Terriers, in the image of EBT's, God created all other breeds.

I must say that the compliments Bull Terriers get far exceed any criticism. I don't even remember the last time I heard someone say anything negative about one of my bullies. Even at the Vets office they draw a crowd and all attention is on them.
It takes a real jerk for any person to come up to a stranger (or even someone they know) and criticize their dog. true dog lovers, no matter what breed they love, realize dogs are cherished as family members and saying anything negative about them is no different than telling someone they have an ugly baby. Any person with that kind of ignorance is someone I'd wish to stand clear of.

The Bull Terrier is the Gladiator of all dog breeds and demands respect by all those fortunate enough to come into contact with one. >:)

  • That deserves an AMEN!!!!!

  • Hopefully we won't have to deal with some mis-guided individual lecturing us about Stoeger and his breed when he hits the town with us.

With any luck, he will be well-behaved and set a good example for the breed making "that guy" look silly for even spewing such horse crap.
  • I agree! I've seen four around here. I saw two the other day and the dudes male wasn't well behaved at all! I think he got in over his head and maybe a little too busy to give the proper attention. The dog was yanking and pulling and head butted me but I would never say dude you have a bad dog. I felt sorry for his pups though and that they weren't getting the guidance and attention they need and deserve :-(

Very true on the more praise they get. Spud isn't aggressive at all (knock n wood), but he will also be getting neutered at around 12 months. He's been socialized by the couple I had him with and even at 8 weeks he was sleeping with them in their bed no problem. I got him at 11 weeks since he was one of the last of the litter. Even then I allowed him to sleep on my bed the first week and had no problems but now he's in the crate and sleeps there at night.

Even when I got him I found a day care that did had a clean facility for puppy socials every Saturday that had personal trainers to observe them for an hour at for only five bucks a social. I did this for four weeks until he was 15-16 weeks and on his third set of vaccinations then started taking him to the dog parks but very slowly.

Now he goes twice a day and everyone loves him there because of his energy to play with their dogs. The park near my house is perfect for me as the other one with stuck up people was a few miles away in a much nicer area.

Oh yea never mentioned my name and its Mike. I'll post a picture of Spud and I soon.

  • Get used to Bully head-butts Stoges_mom ;)

Well behaved or not those come with the territory...
  • I think it mainly comes from lack of education. I have to
admit I had some misconceptions of Bullies before I did my research. But it was
nowhere to what people say or do when they meet mine on the walks. A lot of the
times I hear, ohh look it’s a Pit Bull as they grab their children and move to
the other side of the street. If they can’t even recognize the dogs breed I can
only image what they think of them.

One Bully is just not enough

    Chucho es lindo! Bello!
Know what I say to those people....screw em. Don't have any interest in educating them whatsoever. I know what our Maya is and that's enough for me. Just think about it this way. Those people? You'll see them once in your lifetime and then they're gone....to live their own pathetic ignorant lives watching Oprah and gnoshing on bon bons the rest of their lives.
I have no tolerance for those people and my wife will tell you that I'm quick to let them know it as well. Insulting Maya is equal to insulting one of my daughters.

And I agree with Steve. Maya is the hit of the show when we take her out to the beach shopping district.

Our neighbor a couple doors down has a pit....he's probably 80-100 lbs easy. What a big sissy. He got off the leash one day and ran up in the yard while I was laying down working on my motorcycle. Before I could get to my feet I was covered in big, slobbery, pit bull kisses!

Here's what I say to morons that denigrate the pit bull as well...

  • Those pit kisses rock!!! My worry is all the bs on these breed bans will eventually come my way. I had a pit for 14 yrs. And I would have loved to have someone tell me I get rid of my dog because its done nothing but give me unconditonal love but my neighbor don't like her so well she's gotta be put down. I would have moved first but what happens when theirs nowhere to go??
Your actions speak so loudly I cannot hear your words.
  • It happens. I normally just keep quiet at the parks but I do speak if you are approachable and will chat a storm if the people are cool, which I've seen at the park near me so far. The whole pit bull stigma is bad here because I live near one of the nations deadliest cities in Oakland, CA and there are many pit bull breeders here. Most are for fighting but honestly it's the owner not the dog.
  • Punish the Deed not the Breed!
  • AMEN!!!!
Your actions speak so loudly I cannot hear your words.
  • This upsets me. I have never come across a mean pit bull or bull terrier. The meanest dog I came across was actually a golden retriever!!! He bit his owner twice and constantly attacked my shepherd!! Aren't they the number 1 top rated "family" dog? Steve brought Sooner over here the other day for a visit during their walk and he was SO good with us and Apollo. People are ignorant and they always will be. Find a group that isn't judgemental! True dog lovers are out there. It IS like insulting someone's child! Last week I took Apollo for a walk and my neighbors kid says "that's a weird looking dog! Look at that dog! Isn't he weird?" I told Steve I had to stop myself from kicking the kids training wheels out from under him. (Not really) I did almost tell the kid he was weird looking too. Figured it wasn't a nice way to welcome in the new neighbors. But Apollo is MY baby and I think he's handsome! They are all wonderful!
  • I had a man tell me that I had the ugliest dog he's ever seen and a little girl say look mommy that dog looks like a pig. Manyehave thought they were pit bulls and the rest fall all over them!!!! Here in Michigan their really rare and usually theirshow stoppers!!!! I get alot "what kind of dog is that he/she or both are beautiful do you breed them" can't anyone own a male and female without breeding them?? !!!!

I guess I am used to it.  I forgive their Ignorance.  Once upon a time my wife and I never knew the truth, that EBTs are the best.  Now I just can't see ever owning anything different.  Once at our vet I had our 7 babies in for thier 6 week shots.  As usual all the vet techs know we are coming and steal our babies.  Leaving 1 puppy on my lap and 1 on my daughters. There was a lady that had her Pit Bull in which looked like it just had a litter recently.  She could not believe I just let them run off with the puppies.  I said if you can trust them to vaccinate and do a check up on them why not hold them.  She ever so politely said she does their own shots because it is so easy and not worth the cost of taking them to the vet.  I hope they get better care at their new home.  Anyway her dog wanted to growl at my puppies.  They both started to bark at her and when their siblings heard they started in across the vet office.  She told me they were aggressive and asked what kind they were.  I politely told her English Bull Terriers, not to be confused with Pit Bulls.  She told me the usual that they looked like baby pigs.  I said there must be alot of people wanting baby pigs because they are sold the day they are born.  The real kicker is when her daughter said Oh Mommie those are Target dogs.  That's what I have always wanted.  You could have heard a pin drop until she walked out.  Then there was laughter!!

  • Ignorance...yep you're right.  That's what I told my landlord.  Only, my landlord is my Sister!  (She's a cat person)  She wants us to get rid of Willie, because she went through an aggressive stage.  She's fine now, we just keep food up when she comes in.  She will go after Buster, our lab.  But....there's a whole new dog when she plays with Claxxton.  SHE shows submission.

Any time I take Willie out everyone LOVES her.  Especially men.  And now Claxxton, they take out their phones and take pictures!  I would have no trouble taking orders for puppies.  I get no negative in the public.  Just my silly Sister!  LOL
