Toxic plants

I think If I had to describe Apollo as a person, it would be Randy from a Christmas Story. Remember his excitement Christmas morning?? "OHH WHAT'S THAT, THAT'S MINE, OOOOO THAT'S MINE!!". That is totally my boy. Any little stick, bug, or dust bunny is an object to eat. Last week I caught him trying to snack on my Azalea bush, and I know those are toxic for dogs. There were a few plants I knew that were also toxic, but for safety reasons I went on line to see what else in my yard could potentially harm him. Like the gardenia he tried to eat this morning (along with a snail. lol)  I'm sure there is a discussion already on here about toxic plants, but I'm going to throw this link up here. It's from the ASPCA and good for cats, dogs and horses. I like that if you click on the picture it shows you the plant, signs and symptoms.

    I'm going to check the link in a minute... But I bet they don't mention Sago Palms.... We have plenty in our garden and the kids are not particularly interested in them .... But the seeds are DEADLY.... I have heard stories of dogs dying before they can even reach the vet.... So if you have any ... Cut the seed pods off and dispose of them before they grow...DISPOSE, not at the end of the garden... Out with the weekly trash. I am posting some pictures of the palms, the seed pods as they start... And as they develop and ripen.... Soon after the last shot the seeds start drying and popping off... So they should be GONE, by then.

    (P.S. I have no idea why these pictures post upside down... Hopefully they show well... Or stand on your head
    :-))

    In the beginning God created English Bull Terriers, in the image of EBT's, God created all other breeds.
  • Uggg, I hate sagos!!! Beware of the spikes in the center also!!! Years ago I had poked myself 3 times before I realized they were toxic. It was an awful night. I still get random vertigo. Thanks for the info Philsergeant!!
  • Leslie, that's funny. I've never had any luck with the bitter apple in the past. Seems it always attracted my shepherds. Maybe I can try to spray around the garden. I sure don't want this little guy sick. He's so fast and of course the curious little puppy. This morning he ate a beetle and by the time my husband got over there he had swallowed it. (Gross)
  • Does anyone know if this is poisonous! They pop up over nite and Selah smells it within seconds of walking out the house and runs straight to them. She loves to gobble them up!!! Never displayed any throwing up or diarrhea, but its a wild mushroom so it can't be good!

  • I really do not know. I think this is a question for Super Steve!!

    Nope, I have no answer on that one. I'd have to find out what kind of mushroom it is and whether or not it's a safe one. Here's a list of poisonous mushrooms which is a start to researching the BAD ones. http://www.naturephoto-cz.com/poisonous-mushrooms.html

    However, if your Bullie has already consumed a couple (1) it obviously isn't have a negative effect and (2) it must not have a bad taste. Most likely it's a common mushroom that possess no harm but due to the fact that your dog is eating them I'd conduct the research to find out what kind of mushroom it is and whether or not it can pose any form of harm to a dog if eaten.

  • If Selah starts walking backwards and barking at nothing in the corner, then you will know what kind of mushroom it is! We have them growing also. I walk the yard in the morning and pick them before wild man gets to them.

  • LOL You guys are too much!  ;))
  • Darn me for being the party basher... Lol! Yoshirican, I was reading up on mushrooms after you posted the pics. I read that it takes an expert to tell the difference between toxic and nontoxic mushrooms. The article said you can take it in to a local garden center for possible identification. I find when I go into Lowe's or HD, they are clueless. It also said you have to get it there immediately before it starts to deteriorate. I'm sure if Selah hadn't had any problems they are fine, but at least you will get a peace of mind. :-B
  • Get off the mushrooms Craig hallucinagens are bad for you 8-}
