I believe a lot has to do with diet too. Our current children don't have much at all ( but then again they are children, we check every orifice 10 times a day).... Sometimes too much protein. But we use cotton swabs ( well I steal them from my wife's makeup draw).... If you read Q-Tips box [I know you will read, because you won't believe this]... It says "do not insert in the ear".... An ear specialist pointed that out to me after I got a massive infection using one.
In the beginning God created English Bull Terriers, in the image of EBT's, God created all other breeds.
Yep, every doctor in the world will say NEVER use Q-Tips because people often enjoy jamming them down their ear canal with hopes of spit shining their ear drum causing problems. Obviously if used properly they are perfectly safe and work well for the crevices inside the ear which collect dirt and grime. I have my Bullies romping through the forest, swimming in ponds, chasing balls, and playing in mud. I think at times they compete against each other to see who can get the dirtiest. I get a solid white Bullie looking like a brindle or Tri-colored in under an hour. :-O

They have plenty of ear cleaner solutions for dogs but I have seen NO benefits of these compared to soap and simple swabbing with Q-tips.
