Sun Burn

Cleo often lays in the sun and her pink pigment burns:( I bought some doggie sunscreen but am skeptical to put this on or around het face. Any suggestions other than keep her out of the sun! She loves it but gets quite red:(

A Bull Terrier can't get enough of that type of "Sun Block."

In all actuality, many people put sun block on their dogs nose. Nothing wrong with that at all. There's hardly any fur there and they are susceptible to getting burnt in that area if they are exposed to the sun for a prolonged period of time.

I haven't heard of too many BT's getting burnt inside their ears or eyelids. However, if you're noticing any sun burn in these areas apply some sun block. Sun block isn't bad for dogs. Use it as you would for yourself.

  • Chimera got sunburn already on her nose,i didnt realize it was hot enough for it so soon, but normally thruout the summer mine get baby sunblock put on there faces every morning to prevent it.

if they do get burnt i use that pure aloe gel on the burn.

I am by no means qualified to answer this question... All I can give are my own observations. We recently lost our 14 year old best loved. She died of a lung infection, most probably lung disease ( we could only tell by autopsy which we decided not to put her through after the final weeks of suffering). All her life she loved lying on her side in the (Florida ) sun. She always came out of the sun gasping for breath. She always lay on the same side. We were too ignorant to think anything wrong of it and, after all, she loved it. In her final weeks, the only way she could breath was to lie on her side, that same side. Now the two could have absolutely no connection, but then again, they could. In hind sight, what benefit did we afford her by letting her lay in the sun? Little to none. All we did was what EBTs love best, us giving in to her desires. If it were me again, I wouldn't let her do it. For what it's worth.

On another note, we found with her, and our new precious white girl ( our boy is brindle and less susceptible ) when we take her to the beach we must put sunblock on her nose and ears.... But in the narrow hairless band around her eyes (where it's almost impossible to apply sunblock lest it weep into her eyes), she gets badly burned, and we haven't found a solution....

  • That is interesting, I have never noticed it being the same side :-? I will now start to pay attention though. She does pant and is out of breath but I assumed it was from being hot. She can do this for hours then come in and lay on the cool floor. YES that spot under her eye and inside her ears, I'm gonna start putting some sun block on her for sure!!!

  • Oohh and when she comes in she again lays on her side..... its almost like its uncomfortable to sit on her butt???....I have brought this up to her vet but he didn't seem alarmed at all. The 4 grand surgery isn't a sure fix either or I might consider it opposed to having her leak urine the redt if her life @-)

Yes, panting from the heat but I can't help but thinking that lying on the one side inhibited that lone ung from working, and thus the one lung did all the "hot air" work. As far as vets are concerned I'd always get a second opinion because, for the very most part, I don't believe they really know squat!... Try this (bill), and if it doesn't work we can try this (bill) and then I always have a specialist friend I can send you to that has bigger ideas (bills).

  • I am not a vet but my guess is when she layed on the one side the rest of her organs put less pressure on her lung thus allowing her to breath a bit easier. Ex. Pregnant woman are advised to sleep on their right side so their is less pressure to the vital organs that are on the left side ..... cleo has been thru a spay then an ecplorato

  • Stupid phone..... that was an exploratory surgury to try tofind the reason she is leaking, her uritors for as far as they could be traced were fine. I have been noticing the side she lays on isn't always the same. I agree vets are clueless sometimes, just seems with all the technology science would be a little less guess work. Very frustrating!!!!
