separation anxiety from the mother

I just picked up my 5 week old bull terrier from the breeder and he is whining all night. I tried putting a heating pad in his crate along with a shirt of my sent. This help a little, but not really. He falls asleep for 20 minutes to a hour then wakes up and whines. the heating pad and shirt helped.

I am looking for any thoughts or ideas!

  • Be careful using a heating pad, they can quickly get too hot and burn a puppy and not to mention the possibility of them chewing the wires ect. Your puppy was too young to leave!!! Why did the breeder send home a puppy at 5 weeks? They don't even get their first shots till 6 weeks and he is not protected from any diseases that really puts your new puppy in danger. This really angers me!!

Your puppy is missing his siblings not so much his mother. They have things that you can buy from pet stores that have a stimulated heart beat that can sooth them but he is going to cry regardless as he copes with no longer having other puppies to cuddle up against. Your going to have to ride it out.
  • Put him in bed with you ;)
Your actions speak so loudly I cannot hear your words.

Unbeleivable! I have a litter of puppies here with me right now that are almost 6 weeks old and i wouldn't even think of letting them go to their new homes. this is how bull terriers grow up with temperament problems because they didn't have suffiecient time with their sibblings as well as socializing with other dogs. The ages of 6 weeks to 8 weeks are very important for puppies so they learn proper behavior habits. My puppies (5 1/2 weeks old) are wrestling and fighting with each other all the time. This is normal and is an important part of their development.

Your puppy is undergoing stress right now from being away from his siblings and in a new place that he's not at all used to. Heck, he has probably only been off the nipple for a week now and barely eating solid foods. My worry is that his stress and natural depression will impact his appetite and thus cause concerns for his health. Danielle is correct - at 5 weeks old he hasn't even been vaccinated yet. He is prone to illness and disease at his age.

In truth, you are partly to blame for this by accepting a puppy at this age without researching appropriate ages to accept a puppy. One google search on this subject will have you realizing you got your puppy far too young and from a pathetic breeder that could care less about the welfare of his or her puppies.

Your puppy requires constant companionship so in reality Leslie is right by saying put him in bed with you. If he doesn't have his siblings he's in need of some sort of security which at this time is YOU. Now is the time to dedicate to raising him with some devotion unlike your breeder.

You must OUT this pathetic excuse for a breeder who theoretically knew better than to take your money at 5 weeks... Even though they ignored the knowledge and duped you anyhow. They should be corrected with all effort.!!!
In the beginning God created English Bull Terriers, in the image of EBT's, God created all other breeds.
  • UGH! that poor baby!! its no WONDER he is upset! he is missing his mother-he is going to be missing out on VERY important socielization from om and siblings, poor thing!
  • He it actually sleeping almost through the night so far. I have a small chiwawa/ terrier and they are growing with each other slowly. They have even started growling and jumping around each other. He seems fine so far and he is eating about a 1/2 cup + a day so far.

Well, it's good to hear that he's at least eating and doing well for himself.

Curious - Did the breeder tell you he was a "Mini" or do your AKC papers depict the breed as a "Minature Bull Terrier"? If he's a CKC they can say anything the owner wishes so it really wouldn't make a difference. Just curious because I'm seeing a ration of so called "Mini" bull terriers being adverised as Mini's when they are small frail Standard bullies. I had someone a few months ago show me their dogs AKC pedigree which clearly stated him to be a standard Bull Terrier but they debated with me that their dog was a Mini because their breeder told them so. The Bull Terrier was full grown, skinny, lacked proper muscular form, and weighed about 40 pounds at best. A average AKC Mini Bull Terrier usually costs between $2000 - $3500 depending on the bloodlines and reputation of the breeder.

  • Yep, I don't know how many times I have seen people tell me their bullie is a mini but its far too big to be a mini. If he's not AKC papered as a mini, I wouldn't believe it one bit!
