Scared bull terrier

Hi I have a 6month old mini bull terrier. I had him since he was 3months old. I have the problem that he is scared of everything since he arrived to our home. He dosent want to walk on walks, when someone goes towards him he stars shaking(a dog, human, he was scared of cars to but now is better). Even when we are home and someone new arrives he goes in a corner shaking. He dosen't want to go to other dogs and play with the, he just runs away of them. He is scared of everything i don't know what to do. I tried with food but he dosen't want to eat when is scares or outside where are pepole and other dogs, he is just looking at them. We tried with school but is not helping. Can you help me guys?

  • Hi there, congrats on your new pup! I am a new owner as well. I have had my girl Sassafras for 4 months now and she was the same way when we got her at 6 months. I had to carry her outside and inside because she was eve.n scared of the yard. I obviously don't have all the answers, many more are years experienced here, but I can tell you what had helped my girl in these 4 months. We have gone through a couple months of training with her and that was stressful for her for we kept at it, working at her pace, and eventually she came to love it. At first she had to be away from.other dogs because she was scared and men too. Slowly other dogs were brought near or people and she would just be asked to sit near them. Then as she grew more comfortable with that she would run through commands in the presence of other dogs or men. So at home I followed the same principle. She was scared to leave the house so I would bring her out to the drive way and have her sit while the kids were coming off the bus or going or playing. Things that would make her nervous I would just have her sit during it. Slowly taking the next step and doing that in front of the neighbors house and then the corner. I always make sure to have treats she loves on me and give her lots of praise and pats and runs when she is displaying the behavior I am asking, such as sitting. Now my scared bully will play with the dogs she used to hide from and will even go on walks around the neighborhood. She still shakes and gets nervous and won't accept treats when we walk , but no longer tucks her tail and doesn't resist going for a walk. When we get home she gets whatever she wants
  • My comments always seem to get cut off
  • Thanks for the answers hope it will work for my bully too

@kstorck, good job with your dog! :)
I love that you took your time with your dog and also the time to explain your development here.
Because I think time is actually the key in this case.

Bull Terriers are anything but dumb. But with some things they just need more time than other dogs do.
This can also refer to adjusting in a new home.
You've been trying with your dog for only three months. That's close to nothing for a dog that comes into a new environment and is scared.
Trust needs time to develop and your bond needs to grow. Once your dog feels comfy in the new situation, its confidence will grow.
Take it slow, don't force anything. Stick to the gentle approaches you are already trying. And - as @kstorck already said: step by step. Then sooner or later she'll lighten up, I'm sure of it!
  • Yes we are doing it slowly with everything, we dont want him to be to stressed. Hope he will be confident when ful grown. Thanks to both for the answers

I can almost 100% assure you that the original problems come from the original breeder... a puppie that comes from a confident litter in a confident environment at a confident breeder...will come to you with no fears... Bullies are no whoosies... but they are emotional children and if they are not brought up lovingly in the first 8 weeks (i.e. "Brought up" for money's sake) they will come to you "damaged"... the good news is that they thrive on love, and if you love them they will re-build very quickly
In the beginning God created English Bull Terriers, in the image of EBT's, God created all other breeds.
