Help with my puppy Rumble

He will be 8 weeks this Friday. For the past week, he has had very runny stool and sometimes explosive watery stools. Breeder told me he started them on Nutro puppy so that's what I kept him on. He refused to eat it for the first couple days, but I wasn't sure if it was just him getting adjusted and having no appetite. I began to worry about him not eating and was recommended to try small portion of skinless, boneless chicken breast boiled with no seasoning. I gave him a tiny amount of that and he ate it like it was going out of style. I did a few meals that way and added a small amount of the nutro puppy kibble. Again he went back to only picking out small pieces of chicken. I made a vet appointment last Fri and she checked him out and thought maybe he just didn't like the kibble. She recommended adding in a small amount of nutro puppy wet food. So i did that and he seems to be eating that through the weekend, however his stools are still very soft, runny and very watery a few times. I'm not sure what else to do. Was going to make another vet appt due to the duration of his very runny stools. Should I try switching foods, like TOTW, and transition him away from the Nutro? Any advice or recommendations welcome. He has had first shots and wormed at 4 and 6 weeks. This is my first EBT, but have raised two APBT's. Neither of them had this issue. Thank you!

    1) shoot the idiot breeder that let you get the puppy two weeks before he was meant to leave his mama's teat.
    2) remember that every change in food is going to bring about the runs for a couple of days, so try and make the changes small and gradual.
    3) although Nutro manages to get 3.5 stars here and there, I still think it's crap... unless you are getting Nutro Ultra and Grain Free.
    4) I'd first add 1/4 cup of boiled white rice.
    5) keep putting in boiled chicken (1/4 cup) but use minced chicken and mix it in well so he can't pick it out
    6) then gradually replace the Nutro with something GF and decent.
    7) once the runs have stopped then we can talk about next steps.
    8) make sure he has PLENTY of water to replace what he is losing meanwhile.
    9) I don't know what the water's like in TX, it sucks here in FL, keep him on bottled or RO water if you can.
10 ) adding some Probiotics always helps. ....(Dr Mercola)

  • Thank you for the reply. I will follow advice and update here.
  • Have a stool sample checked again at your vets.
Sometimes it's not always picked up because it screens for intestinal parasite eggs. The parasites don't always shed eggs therefor giving you a false negative.
Have them look for coocidia or giardia. A different dewormer os needed for those.

  • Thanks, I was in the car about to leave work, so I didn't have time to read what I wrote. Sorry if that was hard to follow.
Now reading back, I was posting about the deworming.. Though it may not be the cause of the puppy's GI upset, this is still good info to know.
For Robzilla: Good deworming should be done at least 3 times, 3 weeks apart each dose.
Common parasites are Hooks, whips, and round worms. Drontal Plus is typically used for those.
However that does not work for coccidia or giardia (which can also cause diarrhea!)
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Your monthly Heartgard chew also deworms for Hooks and Rounds, but not whips.
Sentinel and Interceptor deworm for Hooks, Rounds, AND whips.
To intially get rid of intestinal parasites, do the 3 rounds of dewormer. Then your heartgard, sentinel or interceptor will "clean them out" each month.
Hope that's not too confusing!! Feel free to ask questions. :)
  • Not confusing and thank you! I appreciate the input. He is on the plain rice right now and his stool does to seem to be getting better although, not quite there yet. He is a very playful puppy and gets so excited at meal time. Other than his diarrhea, he is acting perfectly fine. We will continue the protocol and see how it goes.

Robzilla - Get your puppy back to your Vet and ask him for some Albon. I'm willing to bet he's got coccidia.

  • Took the monster back to the vet a little while ago. They did a full panel on his fecal test and everything came back negative. They did say his "bad" bacteria was a little more than they'd like to see and apparently had some "unidentifiable" bacteria as well. So, they sent me home with probiotics, amoxi drops, metronidazole/flagyl 250mg, and panacur liquid 100mg. They should that should take care of the problem and to continue supplementing rice into his food. He goes back on the 10th for his 2nd set of shots where they will do another fecal exam just to check it again and see. Thank you guys for the input. He is such a goofball and full of energy. Just want to get him feeling better on that back end! Here he is with my little boy. image

It's hard to tell which of those three is the cutest... also hard to believe that after the vet had those three cuteys in the exam room that he had the cheek to give you a bill at all.
