demodectic mange

My 5 month Bull Terrier has had Dermodetic mange since we got her at 2 months. She was originally prescribed a shampoo, ivomec and a cream to apply to her skin. after about a month of treatment we stopped because none were helping and the mange continue to spread. we tried adding a natual supplement to her food and applying natural oils for fungal infections to her skin within weeks she was cleared up. but now the mites have come back and they detected all life stages. shes been on a new medication for about a week and again nothing changes and the mange continues to spread.

is there any natural remedies that have worked for any of you?

We need to get a comprehensive understanding of her diet and living conditions... what she is possibly exposed to, internal and external. She is going to need some vet assistance (anti-biotic) to get the issue under control now that it has flared up... but you need to find out what is allowing it to return.... a good start would be using a good shampoo, like GNC Pets Anti-bacterial and Anti -fungal shampoo , available at Amazon to create the best skin environment... it's either her food (affecting her immune system) or in her surroundings... tell us as much as you can, how often she is bathed?, how often her bedding washed?, etc. photos of her condition will help

  • My boy battled the same thing, vet did a small dose of ivermectin for a couple months. Small patches returned and he gave one shot of anti biotic and now the problem is solved (so it would seem)

Diet is super important and I would recommend timberwolf organics!! Love this product but only downside iso you can only order from their website. I cycle between that and a raw diet.

Coconut oil, fish oil, and a nutrient filled supplement such as nuvet or Hardypet are all used on my Bronte as well
    :D
  • A before and after look.

Hope your pal makes a speedy turnaround

  • Ive had the same issue but touch wood in a far better place.
Please dont take this as gospel just what i have been told and found

1 it will never go away, it can be managed and made treated but it was transferred from mom to pup so stuck with it
2 ivermectin is what treats mine, he was on a daily dose now he just just has a smaller dose once a week
3 some of arrows skin issues were not mange related but allergies, i only found this out by trying 4 different vets untill i got one that knew what was going on. He found this out by doing regular skin scrapes to test for the demodectic. I say this as i would make sure there is not a secondary issue. Arrows was allergy. I have taken chicken out his diet and started to brush him daily with a furminator and his fur/skin is about 85% i would say. Im happy with this but it really is about maintence im afraid.

ive attached some before during and present pics.. Arrows came on at about 4 months

  • Oh an d i found stress brings him in an outbreak, the worst he ever got was because at the last minute i had to put him in a kennels for 3 days as i couldnt take him on an emergancy trip. He was nearly 50% bald when i got him back
  • originally she was eating natural balance chicken formula and that was not good for her, now she eats wellness brands salmon formula i also add a pump off salmon oil to her food once a day,she also eats lots of fruits and veggies for treats. most of the day from 7am-3pm shes outdoors with access to the garage. when i get home we play and go for walks but i have noticed she seems a bit depressed lately, she also has a fixation with her tail. she bathes 2 times a week originally with malaseb the vet prescribed her a new one, she sits in the shampoo about 10 minutes before rinsing off.  i wash her bedding at least once a week if not twice as well.
  • She also has not socialized with other dogs because of her mange i have not taken her to the dog park. the vet says it isn't contagious but im not sure what people will think when they see her or if they would be bothered, what are your opinions on that?

@valexandra... can you please post some photos... there must be something that can be done... I hate to see unhappy Bullies as well as unhappy Bullie owners. I know a certain percentage will be breeding, but there is so much that can be done with food and supplementd

@WBA.... I hear you, I promise, but your boy is not bad... I am starting to swear by this supplement... if you can't get them on Amazon, or order them direct from manufacturer (I'm sure you can) ... then let me know. I had to take out a second mortgage to afford them, but it was worth it.image<img src="http://www.bulliesofnc.

I'd be working towards improving her immune system with a supplement like NuVet vice a treat that helps control alergies on dogs with minimal issues. Easy to get results from any product designed to provide nutrients which will benefit a healthy dog but their comes a time when the main issue is centered around a weak immune immune system which should be the focal point.

Never tried any of the horse supplements. Well, you've been provided some pretty good advice here and I'm confident if you use the right things your Bullie will be on the road to success with her shin issues.

  • Mine had demodex mange when we got him he had some missing hair not bad at all just a couple spots and then it seemed like over night he got this nasty sore on his face so I brought him in and they gave him chephalexin as an antibiotic and hydroxyzine for itch relief and nexgard it's a flea and tick pill but she said it helps the hair grow back faster and of course his probiotic and organic coconut oil and his grain free dog food and within a month his skin was clear and within 3 months for all his fur to grow back and no  flare ups since and it's been 6 months.

Great Job!!! I love it when a plan comes together, and I know it takes persistence and a lot of heartache.... but the end results are priceless.
