To Crate Train or Not!

Hi...I am not fond of Crates or Restricted areas in my house My hustand and I are retIred so there is always someone home that will be with our future Bullie. Your thoughts on to or not to Crate Train him. Does everyone crate train their dog? The last Bullie I owned was never crate trained. He was a rehome at 6 months old when I got him. He was housebroken so that was not an issue.He never chewed anything but his toys also. He was never agressive or ever barked. I never heard him growl or bark. So with a new puppy coming should he be restricted. I don't want him to be but if it is advisable I will. Your thoughts would be welcomed.Thanks

Hi @Hope ! Sorry I didn't respond sooner. I honestly think this is just a matter of opinion. I personally crate trained layla . I have actually crate trained every puppy but only for their benifits. I never use the crate for punishment or when we are home. It is only used at night time when she will be alone because let's face it even though if layla had her way we would be constantly playing, everyone has to sleep and that is when she is most likely to get bored and into mischief like eating something that could get stuck or hurt her. I also think this will help with bladder control as they are more likely to have accidents which are harder to correct because they are probably going to the door but no one is awake to notice key puppy confusion (but this is just my thought) Layla even chooses to go into her crate to nap or if she's trying to ignore me because I denied her something lol. For Layla this is her safe place, her bedroom which is what we actually call it. I really hope this helps ☺

I use crates mostly because my Bullies LOVE them. It's their personal dog den. I normally just keep the doors of the crates open so they can come and go at their leisure.

To be honest I've never once had to "Crate Train." Bull Terriers seem to take to a crate naturally and enjoy it. If they are the proper size they prefer to use the bathroom in it even as young puppies. So as far as the "training" goes I don't think there's much effort involved in that.

Thank you for responding. I think I will get one just to be ready in case my Baby wants to use it. Will leave the door open and I am sure it will never be closed. I have never known anyone who used one so I knew great advise would be here. Boy that is a full crate of Bullie Love!! :x

Love the "cluster crate" photo Steve... Our kids used to love crates when they had them, now they have elevated beds and they love them even more... And so much. Ore hygienic!!!!

I have an almost seven month old boy and it is the first time that I've crate trained a dog (first bullie). My boy happily goes in when he's ready for bed. We keep it in our kitchen so he's very much a part of the mix. We only close it when we leave the house as he cant be trusted yet.

We just adopted Spicy and she was crate trained and we put her in it every night so she does not tear thing sup at night..She seems to not to dislike it and yes she also goes in it sometimes when a bit stressed. We have only had her 10 days and reall ylove her a lot!!

dsprofsr - Bull Terriers actually enjoy their kennel crate as a private sanctuary for them to enjoy just like their own personal dog den. We leave ours open all the time and they come and go to them throughout the day and night.


Congrats on the new addition to your family and I commend you for having the heart to adopt.

I would crate the new puppy at least in the beginning . My puppy loves her crate but she was crate trained when we got her at 5 months. The only time she lays down and sleeps in in her crate .

I'm a little jealous of you.. We started with crate training since he was 3 mnths old. He don't like it.

Now he's 9 mnth and wants to sleep under kitchen table (it's hot - summer days), goes in his crate only for a treat. I have to lure him with treat when we're out of home (job).
Do you have any tips or suggestions?

We've never used the crate as a place of discipline or punishment. Our bullies thoroughly love their crate and resort to it on their own. Most Bull Terriers love their crate and think of it like their own private "Dog Den."

Sundance is now 10 months old and has just started to sleep sometimes in his crate. I would rather snuggle with him but it is ok. He likes his crate to hide stuff in like toys or food. If he does not feel well which is rare he curls up in it. It has never been used for punishment or time out. He is a very good dog and rarely gets punished for anything. We maintain a very quite home. No loud voices. I find he is scared of loud noises. High pitched sounds gets him very excited fast, we then have to calm him down with hugs and kisses. He does like his crate though. He will never be in it with the door locked. Just our decision not to. If we have to be away he has a lovely dog sitter that adores him. We want to avoid any situation which OCD can develope.

Vinnie loves his crate. We keep door open so he can go in for a nap any time he wants. He prefers to sleep in his crate at night.

Nice crate Steve. Beautiful daughter. She is growing up fast. Sabbath looks happy in that crate. She to is maturing fast. Hope my name is on one of those crates for Sundance in the future.
