Treadmill Exercise

I finally got one :) any tips on how to start these two out?? He's very interested checking it out and trying to stand on it but and the occasinal paw when I'm on it. I just don't want to scare him and then he will never want to. I held a treat and he got on it with a bit of a butt push but then quit walking and slid off:/ Cleo just wants to watch her big dumb brother fall off!!!

Hey! All brothers are not big....dumb maybe....but not big!    But yeah...I'd like to know some tips on getting Maya on the treadmill too.

Not too sure.  Never tried a tread mill.  4 acres to run them around wears them out.  Maybe if you stay up front and give treats.  Or you use the treadmill for awhile and rotate back and forth.  Good luck.

Start off slow so he's not scared of the machine. Some Bull Terriers take to the treadmill right away and others will run from it. If you make it fun for him he'll learn to enjoy it and want to be on it.

He'll catch on. See if you can both get on it at the same time and walk slowly. If it's too small to fit you both just get him walking on it. Place something on the sides so it's not too easy for him to jump off it. Praise him and reward him with treats. He'll start looking at it as if it's something rewarding and fun.

  • Cleo will work for food Lol!! She took to it right away, little akward but doing great for her first go round! !! Brutus is a lot clumsy and skittish he's gonna need a bit more work all in all good start:) the leash idea went out the window for Brutus as I have to staddle him and holdhim up so he don melt off:/ cleo it worked great to tie her to top bar and when she felt the tighting she kicked it up a knotch to get to the treat lingering at her nose!!! Gonna keep working with them good start so far!!!

With Cesar it took a fewm onths of preping him for it. i first started out doing obedience near the treadmill, after a few weeks i did obedience ON the treadmill, after a few weeks we did obedience next to the treadmill while it was on and would let it go for several hours everyday so it became background noise, then i moved onto practicing hooking him to a lead attached to the front, the last step was putting him on then turning it on-he freaked ou the first few times, so i made sure to straddle him to keep him steady, sometimes he would drag his back feet, so i held his butt so he felt more secure-then i would slowly move away from his rump keeping him on the lowest speed for only a few seconds at a time and only AFTER he calmed down and stopped flailing, after 3 days he was going strong and i kept him on for a whole 5 minutes, next week a whole 10 minutes, next week a whole 30 minutes and so on and so forth.

With Chimera-i put Cesar on when she was a tiny baby and she kept climbing on it herself and getting flung off the back-at 4 months she was on and running, by 5 months she was damn near obsessive over it, so i had to work on her obsession with the treadmill and letting her understand when i turned it off-it meant we are done, no ifs, ands, or buts about it because otherwise she wouldnt leave it alone.

I havent been able to use the treadmill for a while as the belt tore and i have needed otherthings over a new belt and im kinda looking more into buying a new one as mine was old and loud.

xchairity_casex - Cool video! (I embedded it on the page so people didn't need to click on a link and leave the page). It looks like your Bullie is learning to use it pretty well. I can't tell if she wants to attack it, play with it, or run on it. But she's got the knack of it and get run on it very well.  :-bd

  • Thank you Steve for embedding the video! i dont know why, but lately, everytime i try posting video or photos to forums (this one included) its been showing up as just links and its really irritating the crap out of me!!

That video was when she was about 7 months-i taught her to stop jumping at the belt and to stop biting it also-so she just runs without trying to attack it, i worried by her jumping it was going to ruin her front joints.

i really want a brand new treadmill for them-this one i got second hand for myself and never used it for myself and gave it up to the dogs. now i want NEW! brand brand new

Try doing that with some sort of poncey dog... They'd probably pull it off and look so regal.... But they'd never make it that much FUN!
In the beginning God created English Bull Terriers, in the image of EBT's, God created all other breeds.
  • No dog is better than a BULL TERRIER! !!!!!!!! LOL

  • Cleo LOVES the treadmill.....Brutus still thinks I'm trying to kill him and he's so heavy I have a hard time trying to hold him up while he drags:( treats are nonexistant right under his nose I litterally shove them in his jowls and this only distracts him for a short time so he will actually walk, when he swollows yup back to draging his back legs......... yup I need help....what other ideas you guys got??? If u turn it on he looks at me like HELL NO and shuffles his big kaboose right out the dog door :-/
