Hiccups and Flatulence

edited April 2013 in General
Was exchanging text messages this morning with Lizzie and she told me that Maya gets the hiccups at least once almost everyday. She also mentioned that she passes gas quite frequently as well. She's into her 11th week of age now and we've just started transitioning her over to 50% kibble and a 50% raw diet. I was just wondering if the hiccups can be attributed to just a normal part of her growth and will go away after a while? And as well, her flatulence? Is there anything we should particularly look at that could be the cause of her frequent farting and hiccups?

Bull Terriers from the time they are 8 weeks old until 12 months old will commonly get hick-ups simply from eating fast. As any Vet will tell you there's no health concern with this and it's fairly common.

Gas is something that can be brought on by changing the diet or providing a dog table scraps. Even the smallest bit of table scraps can have a big affect in regard to passing gas. However, the Bull Terrier breed is notorious for being a breed that can pass some gas that can clear a room. Growing up we raised Boxers and I don't think there's any dog that can pass gas like a Boxer. But the BT is happy to share its fair share of gas with their owners as well.

The key to minimizing the gas is to stick to a strict diet. Your BT is young and still developing and her immune system is still developing so she's going to let one fly from time to time. The hick-ups will subside as she gets older and slows down while eating.

Some small input / confirmation to Steve's above... Our kids from 8 to 10 weeks had daily, significant hiccups from eating too fast. When we got them they were eating out of the same bowl and that was like NY hotdog eating competition .... So we stopped that, they are gradually slowed down with a degree of confidence that "theirs" was "theirs", and now the hiccups are all but gone (16 weeks).
We have been pretty lucky in the Fart Factory... We keep their food as constant as possible and only get blown away when they latch on to a lizard, frog, or deer poop. I also believe that some chicken ( not all brands) gives them the stinkies, but my wife disagrees. Find the right diet and the green clouds will disperse.

  • Yeah sir Ocar had hiccups too for the first few months. normal.

  • Thanks for the info everyone! We just started Maya on a 50% kibble/50% raw diet. Got the 10 lb sampler from Darwin's Pet Products for $14.95 including shipping. Lizzie started her on the raw chicken sampler, so maybe there is something to the chicken/fart correlation. Yet my wife says that she was farting in the car on the way home after they picked her up at the airport.
  • I think bull terriers just like to fart anyways and than stare at their butts as if to say 'whats going on over there???' hahaha
  • We always have the Vet release the Anal Glands when there.  Lord does it stink but gas goes away for a long time.

    Zerlett,
I'm glad your team stare at their own butts
Our last bully ( God rest her precious soul), whenever she dropped a clanger, would look at one of us, and "say", "that was you wasn't it"? :-) :-)

Im so relieved to hear that my boys constant farting isn't unusual. He's an absolute honey..complete wuss & has stolen my heart entirely! Got him from people who didn't want him any more - he's 3yo, and only had him just over a month.

I have questions about his diet. I give him a good quality kibble - plus fresh fruit & veg. He's nuts about apples, carrots & oranges especially - are these ok to include & should I be giving him any special supplements for his skin?

Id appreciate any experienced feedback! Thanks.

@New_BT_mom - Welcome to the Forum!

Nothing wrong with fruits and Veggies and they love them. In regards to nutrition and supplements here's a link that I think you'll find useful:

  • @BulliesofNC - Thanks so much. I've had a Staffie & Boxer before and they just eat anything with very little drama.  We tend to do the overeating thing at our home, and really don't want him to get chunky. I'll look for a grain-free dry food here (I'm in South Africa) and alternatives to the nutitional products from your link.

With regards to training, he is very submissive, yet seems a bit stubborn too - regards getting on the furniture.  I'm not sure how he was "trained" before - but he shrinks back & hides if you give him a tap on the nose with a newspaper (generally I just smack next to him)

How would I teach him how to play properly? He has no clue about a ball or rope, spins when excited and nips (its only in excitement - not aggression) but it hurts anyway. I have copied Caesar Milan, with the "No touch, no talk, no eye contact" when I get home, and this seems to work - to a degree.

He's an awesome boy, definitely part of the family already.  Like I said, he's only been with us just over a month - so may not be fully settled yet...how long would it usually take for a full grown bully to readjust to his "relocation" fully?

Sorry for all the questions, but I want us all to live harmoniously!
  • Here's a pic of the day he came home with me...

  • He's a handsome boy for sure. Patience is a virtue with a bully. And a firm, but tender touch works with us. But the others, who are much more schooled in their behavior than I am will chime in I'm sure.

Hello New–BT–mom. Aangename kennis!  I used to live in SA, now in USA. We had Bullies in SA too. Probably like you, we managed to get away with feeding them mostly human food ... never had kibble in those days. But now that we've experienced great specimens of the breed. we've learned that a great diet is what keeps them healthy and happy (and fartless), and living long..... If we can help here any way, please let us know.... it'll only cost you lots...........of pictures.

  • @Xtracho - Thanks, I think he's gorgeous, clearly biased!

    @philsergeant - Goodness, I wasn't expecting the "moedertaal" on this forum! :))

Thanks for the offer of help...pictures I can do....Diet wise,  I pretty much stick to kibble for Buck (he came with that name...officially he's Ludere Boldly Unique")  plus some fruit & veg treats, and a meaty bone.  I considered giving him a raw diet, but he eats so quick and doesn't chew...more like INHALES the chicken 1/4 - and I'm scared he'll choke.

    Otherwise all is going well!

No, I must be missing out on it. I had to brake out my Captain Crunch Decoder Ring to decipher the word "moedertaal."

@Xtracho YES, he's already my Main Man!

@BulliesofNC  No more code, I promise...that was the extent of if for me.  Hmmm, although I am very likely to use the word "Eish" now and again... which just means, ummm, well...Eish! :-)) Local for - "I can't believe it / won't do it / don't know / can't / won't / don't understand" - or any other loose variation of the above!!

@ New BT Mom... Okay, now it's time to see some more pics and have stories about your boy... Preferably under a different topic than "flatulence"!

  • Hi from South Africa, have a 10 month old Billie, feeding hills science diet, suddenly started farting like crazy, so bad that the humans have to leave the room (she then follows us so that's not working too well). Would like to know if anyone has any leads on grain-free dry food?
She is such a delight but snuggling on the couch is pretty much out of the question at the moment.
    Thanks!

Aangename kennis. I know GF foods are available in SA, just not sure where. My sister in-law is still a vet there, I'll email her. Yes Science Diet is made from green clouds, not very highly rated either 2.5 stars.  Your first Bullie?

  • Dankie!
Have a 14year old staffiexbullie, fantastic dog, but always wanted a bullie. Pic of the two of them a week or so after she joined the family. Briliant dog, had her for 8 months and she has won over many a sceptic with her gentle nature. not shown any aggression towards other dogs or humans, she now has a little fanclub at our local dog park!
Oddly both of them are extremely gassy at the moment, no changes to their diets and just the past week or so.

    Would appreciate any advice, .i

Okay. I found out that they have a GF food by Agway in SA, also !!! Orijen GF is now available there, my dogs are on (part) Orijen.  Good stuff. If both of them are doofing, and don't normally, then something must have changed. Water, treats, chews... lizards, frogs or crickets abounding in the yard that they can latch on to? Are your pix .jpeg? Are you in Joeies?   (Maybe you have an oom visiting that's blaming it on the dogs? )

If the picture didn't load it may be too large of a photo. try reducing the size of the photo and then uploading it. If you don't know how to reduce the size of a photo let me know and I'll explain it. The process is easy.

  • Thanks, have been adding plain yoghurt to their food and farting is less, but will get some Orijen samples tomorrow and see how they go on it. Also, what's the best harness to use? Have a Sporn no-pull harness but not sure it's not hurting her. She does walk well on the leash but takes off when excited.

Are the photo files .jpeg.   Harnesses are great for when you want them to romp and don't want to let them run free... but not if they pull.  Mine pull because when they see a rabbit, a deer, armadillo there's no holding them back.  But when they walk in public they are fine, we use a harness (Dean and Tyler are good and I believe Kong have some good ones)... but for pulling you need to use a pinch collar:

  • Finally! Miss Tiger - trouble is my middle name- Lily. Have got samples of Orijen and they are both wolfing it down, so far so good with the tummy troubles as well.

    Thanks for the advice!

What a beautiful girl, I think the Orijen will make her outgrow the snuggle wrap in double quick time.
