ACV question

Since my Layla girls recent skin issue I have been scouring the forum on the best way I can help to keep her skin healthy.  I have seen several people recommending ACV. What is the best dose/frequency to give this to her? Also which is better virgin coconut oil or grizzly salmon oil, both?  This is what her current diet looks like. Taste of The Wild High Prairie Puppy Formula with Roasted Bison & Roasted Venison, 1 tablespoon of yogurt twice a day (in the morning for breakfast I mix a smidge of all natural low sodium peanut butter and a slice of banana with it) at dinner I usually mix in some vegetables carrots,  celery or green beans. She also gets one nuvet wafer every day. She is 5 1/2 months old and weighs 37 lbs.  Any advice would be amazing!

Okay, what sort of skin issues is she having?, she looks fantastic from here....??? I have always struggled getting the kids to drink ACV... They just hate the taste... but I know others have managed and it's good for yeast management, perhaps "the succeeders" will chime in... I'd give more Coconut oil and less Salmon, unless the Grizzly oil doesn't cause your kid to have anal excretion issues (which mine do with too much salmon)... but if not, both. Diet looks good but I'd try adding some raw meat, eggs (raw or boiled) and try and avoid anything with potato ... This all assuming you do have a real skin issue, which I can't see.

  • @philsergeant that's because I took your advice and have been giving her massages with the coconut oil. ;-)  I do apologize I should have added a back note. Right now she is dealing with demodectic mange however on a general basis her skin is dry and flaky and of course she has very mild yeast issues (she has a tucked vulva which I also help out with baby wipes) until recently she was not on a good diet at all or the nuvet ( I did not receive very reliable information from the breeder so everything I'm doing is because I've learned it here :-) and is a fairly recent change ). Her coat is looking amazing just in the few weeks since we changed to grain free but her skin is still dry and the yeast even though minor still persists. Of course I may be going over board in the spoiling department as my sister likes to tell me but I just want what's best for Layla. I've been giving her a little coconut oil (about a tsp) with her dinner every other day because I haven't yet found how much or how often on that either. I've not tried the ACV yet but I don't think I will have any issues with her not liking it as she eats like she does everything else in life with great inthusiasm. She's such a happy girl!

You can always mix the ACV in her water or mix it in her food. None of mine have issues with taking it.

I add acv to Chooba's water dish. Had to start slow so he got used to the taste. Now he prefers it to straight water from the tap.
  • Okay thank you guys so much.  How much should I give her and how often would you recommend?

@Laylas_Mommy ... First, tell your sister she's just jealous, she should get someone to rub her with coconut oil... Just kidding... ( oops, she may be twelve for all I know).... You need to accept that a huge deep change will take time... You've worked wonders in weeks and it'll take months for her diet and supplement change to impact her whole body...... To get a Bullie ( or any full breed dog) "in-the-zone" takes not only time but dedication.... You need to look at every treat that you ( or the pesky tellers at the drive-through bank) want to give her, and spend months tweaking her intake. Bathing is another BIG issue... Depending on her environment/ climate, she should probably get bathed once a week, with medicated ( non-dehydrating ) shampoo.... [I shudder when I hear people talk about bathing their dogs every 6 weeks!!!! :-t ]. But keep plugging, it's all worth it.
You may want to try bag balm on that nose ( not your sisters! Layla's!)

@philsergeant nope my sister isn't 12 and your absolutely right she's totally jealous.  I finally found some bag balm for Laylas nose too still debating should I go ahead and put it on my sister's also lol.  Should I use the bag balm every day, twice a day once a week?  On Layla of course.   :D
