CHEWING

Other than her constant biting and jumping in order to bite my shorts etc. my little 11 week old piglet has developed quite the habit of chewing. She is like a beaver in just a few minutes she managed to chew up a coffee table to the point that I don't think I will be able to repair it (sand/stain).

What do you guys recommend to discourage chewing other than the obvious fact of constant supervision. I have tried some bitter cherry type spray and well she actually likes the taste of it and will lick it right out of the bottle.

You must try regular disciplining, but at the 11 week teething stage there is little that can be done to satisfy that need... Keep her penned away in an area that doesn't contain valuables (my wife is still trying to have me replace the laundry room door where they gnawed the corner), provide lots of chew toys, manual supervision or the crate... those are her only alternatives until she sheds those shark needles and grows a real pair.

Sometimes there is an underlying factor. Boredom, hunger, to much time alone ect. Start there.
If its none of the above.
Find something she approves of as a healthy alternatives.
Antlers, nyla bones, Himalayan dog chews, raw hides, stuffed animals, bully sticks, old shoes, anything, at times i even make my own. with enough work you can find an acceptable alternative. But some require constant supervision, or extensive research to find an acceptable source.
There is somthing out there she will go nuts for, you just have to find it.

But the best remedy is exhaustion.

I know every dog is different but Chooba iz 2 years in Feb. He has At least 2 of every chew toy known to man and I make serious effort to exert as much of his energy as possible daily.
He has yet to chew on anything of value. (Fingers crossed)

  • I have giving my baby pig ears after seeing them recommended by a couple people on forums I've looked at and when I tell you she chews them so much that she really hasn't chewed on anything else...I've taken one of my old shirts...not sure if it's just the fact that she wants to chew my fingers or just the shirt(because it smells like me I guess) but she will tug a war with me with that and after that she will chew on the ears...maybe give that a shot...its been working for my 9 week old daughter
  • I may look into some pig ears and giving her an old shoe, she seems quite fond of shoes.

    thanks for the help guys.
  • When I tell you my Gaia loves shoes as well!!! If I leave my closet open with my shoes in it, there is guaranteed to be a shoe in my living room lol...think I may try that as well get an old shoe to give to her

I think she will turn out like her Marmy ... Only brand new shoes will do... Plenty of old ones in the closet.

  • Mine LOVES his Nylabone ( I got the fake antler one). I tried to get him the soft rubbery ones because they are better on teeth, and there are stories of dogs cracking teeth on super hard stuff. I think the dentists say if you can be hit in the knee-cap with it, then they can chew on it. HOWEVER he refuses to chew the soft one.

He also freaks out over bully sticks and rawhide stuff. He will run around the house chewing it and playing. You might give bully sticks a try, though warning they are disgusting looking and to touch once they start chewing.
  • I can relate. Good think I'm a carpenter. I had to turn several legs for a table. I found that beef bones work amazing. He still loves them after teething. Seems this breed tends to chew a lot. I got lucky leaving with a butcher find down the street and I get a huge bag of raw bones for a couple bucks. If that's not a opinion bet grocery store would sell u some as well. Good protein as well. Just what worked for me. He had no interest in anything else but the puppy Nyla bone and he actually ate those as well.
