Your dog's favorite treats

So what do your dogs love? Working on training Icarus and hoping to get more ideas from y'all. So far he likes cheese and chicken hotdogs (no surprise there). He will chew green beans and spit them out, but he does like cheerios. I've got some apples too that I'm going to try this week.

  • Swiss loves any of the Blue Buffalo brand treats. The soft chicken treats are great because there small and moist, she loves them.

We give treats only on "special occasions", like two or three times a day for "remarkable achievements" ... And those are soft"fridge" treats like turkey bacon strips...chicken bites etc...that's if they are lucky... But for just training, where you are giving out "dozens" for performance I'd just use kibble... Or, if you can get a small pack of "tasty kibble" that he is not accustomed to... That he sees as treats, otherwise it can get filling and expensive.... Make sure whateveryougive is grain free...you can also get those freeze dried liver treats that bullies love... They come in these big containers and even if the chunks are larger you can snap them into smaller pieces so they last.

Peanut Butter!!!!   As a matter fact try putting peanut butter on a banana and see if he/ she enjoys a better a treat. I don't know what it is about peanut butter but they can smell that stuff a mile away.

  • Bianca LOVES apples! We just chop them up small and she does all her tricks in one go before we tell her to because she knows we'll ask so she hurries and tries to get them done for the tasty reward! She loves all fruit really and we do kibble too one at a time. One thing we also do (kinda off topic) is make sure that we get near her and stroke her while she eats so she doesn't get food aggressive.

I am mainly using raw baby carrots, sometimes frozen green beans, but also apples, melon, bananas, strawberries and other berries - all cut into small pieces. Many dogs LOVE fruit and can eat almost any of them in moderate amounts without causing problems! However it is good to be careful with giving too much, because of the huge amount of sugars.
Also I NEVER feed grapes, because they can cause kidney failure in dogs!

Also cooked plain turkey or chicken breast or dried plain meat (jerky) cut into tiny pieces do a great job during training, as well as tiny pieces of low fat cheese (if the dog tolerates dairy products).

In the past I have also used these training treats (Grain-free and made in the US):

These are pretty good, very small and good quality, and Djamila liked them. I only stopped using them, because they contain a lot of sugar. I am now using more veggies and my own homemade treats to have more control over ingredients and especially the sugar content.
Since I started making my homemade carrot-coconut mini cookies, Djamila is not interested in many of the processed/manufactured treats any longer.

Here are my recipes, just in case you're interested:

    Cookies

Jerky (it's a little less expensive to make it yourself, but you'll need a dehydrator)

Our dog actually gets a lot of treats during the day - we do a lot of training - but we always watch her overall food intake, taking treats into account. I always subtract the calorie amount of treats I give from the daily food amount.

I am so proud of our "Support Staff" here... where in the world do you get such loving, valuable answers, free of charge, from people that really know EBT's????? Like Erikashea just said. "How about them apples"! This is as good a spot as any on the website to thank all our wonderful contributors and to wish them a wonderful 2016 with just half as many blessings as their Bullies give them every day. If they get that many they will have a very prosperous 2016... And also thanks to our newcomers... We are just so hopeful that you can also bathe in the exotic world of having the full blessings of a great EBT in your life. The only problem is that, after a while, you begin to pity all those frail humans that do not have a Bullie to receive love from, (or worse than that, no dog at all). May all lesser humans see the light in 2016 and understand that Bullies are the only way to heaven.
