Zeus

This is our first Bull Terrier named Zeus. He was born March 9, 2015 so he is 4 months old now. We got him when he was 8 weeks. He just recovered from a belly rash, we had to put that t-shirt on him so he would stop scratching it!

What a wonderful looking fella!  Great to see he has grown up tolerant of cats.  I take it the photo with the SuperDog shirt is the more recent... Looks like you got a handle on the floppy ear problem.  Tell us more!

In the beginning God created English Bull Terriers, in the image of EBT's, God created all other breeds.
  • His ears come up on their own just shy of 4 months. My husband has always wanted this breed, but he was stationed in Hawaii so couldn't really get any pets. I wanted the cat. We just moved to Florida in April. My husband grew up in Daytona Beach, I'm from Michigan. Still getting used to the Florida heat!

We got Zeus and the kitten Athena a day apart so they could grow up together. He still gets too rough with her and we have to separate them. He still bites us sometimes too when hes mad or trying to play. We have been taking him to a group puppy training class at PetSmart. He made it 4 out of 6 weeks and the trainer recommended doing some one on one socialization sessions then having him repeat the course for free. He knows the tricks when we are at home and he listens to us, but when he gets to class with other dogs around he just wants to play and ignores everything else! Hopefully some socialization with other dogs will help him clam down quicker.

He had a belly rash that just cleared up. The vet put him on antibiotics for 2 weeks and we were giving him medicated baths, there was no change in his rash after the first week of antibiotics. I added Benadryl and a topical cream plus a t-shirt so he would stop scratching and making it worse. I'm so relieved it healed and hoping it doesn't come back. My best guess is it was from pesticides from grass he laid in when we were walking him around the neighborhood. I'm hoping its not a food allergy. Any insight would be appreciated!

He is 33lbs at 4 months. The breeder said he should be 55lbs but I'm not so sure about that!

First, although pesticides and fertilizers on grass can cause rashes, as can the heat in FL, that rash is unlikely to have been caused by that alone.  (I hope that is a "before" photo and not an "after" one.)
Please let us know exactly what he is eating and drinking, in detail. That may supply some clue.  If your breeder reckoned he should be at 55lbs in 4 months then it must be the first time he bred EBT's (Unless Zeus is a minature his weight is about perfect for now).  ou happened to come to FL in the WORST summer I know of being here 26 years.  And it's brutal on Bullie skin, keep him cool.
In the beginning God created English Bull Terriers, in the image of EBT's, God created all other breeds.
  • The second pictures with the t-shirt on is the after picture. It cleared up 5 days after we started giving him Benadryl. Heat can cause rashes?! He spends most of him time inside. I work from home and my husband just started college on his GI bill so we are home with him 99% of the time. He usually just goes outside to do his business then comes back in. The longest he stays out is 20 mins at a time. We only take him for short 30 min walks around 8pm when the suns almost down.

The breeder had him on Canidae Life Stages Chicken Meal & Rice Dog Food. He is still eating that plus lots of different dog treats. We were talking about switching him to a grain free food. What do you suggest?

I ran into a woman with a 2 year old mini bull terrier on the 13th. I got a good picture next to Zeus. The mini was 34lbs she said.

  • The breeder said 55lbs full grown weight. It seems like that's a low estimate. Hes 33bs at 4 months. Don't they grow until they are 12 months?
  • Grow In height until over a year then fill out usual u til about 2 I believe
  • philsergeantphilsergeant Palm City, Florida, USA
You must get him on a Grain Free food... there are lots of recommended brands here on the site.  That Canidae hasn't got a bad rating but it's not grain free. Try and restrict the treats to ones that you know are grain free and have better ingredients... so many companies just sell mush with flavouring and odor adders.
The mini doesn't look pure bred to me, hard to tell the weight.

  • Was looking through these pictures and thought you had a very strange cat and a normal cat. :D

He's a cutie! Glad to see the rash is starting to clear up. I visited Florida recently and in that thread (about Pine Needles) talked about Florida a bit and what has caused other bullies to get bumps and rashes. I think someone has mentioned pesticides and lawn treatments giving their bullie a rash, and other times it was bites from fleas or red ants (though I think you would have noticed these by now). I hope you can figure out the source and get him 100% cleared up. I second Phil on getting him on a better, grain-free food.

If Zeus is 34 pounds at 4 months I reckon he's going to be a big boy. Mine, though female, has maxed out at 50 pounds. She was always very petite as a puppy. I know that @BulliesofNC has had some massive boys, so maybe you can compare weights with him, but all bullies are different. Typically they will reach max height between 10 and 12 months but will fill out for 2 or 3 years. And it's hard to compare against miniature Bull Terriers because...well, technically they're a different breed.
  • Thanks guys! I am switching him to a grain-free food. I will look into the pine needles thread. I started a thread just for his rash in the health and wellness section. Maybe the pictures will help someone else in the future if I figure it out. If all else fails, I got the number for a dermatologist from my vet.

I caught them playing in the bathtub the other day and thought I would share.

We bought him a kiddie pool today for $10. I got a great video of him playing in the water for the first time! He loves attacking the water. Money well spent!

  • Hes an awesome looking bullie!!  Congrats.  I to am a first time bullie owner.  I'm also a retired vet tech.  Rule of thumb on weight for most breeds, is double the weight they are at 4 mos. and they should finish their adult weight in that area.  It seems to hold true.

My puppy, Hannah, got a tummy rash within 2 weeks of getting her.  No idea why, although she drags her hind end around on the carpet all the time (its too funny) crawling all over the carpet.......outside too in the grass.  I also have horses and have them on Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar for their coats and bugs and other good things.  I thought, wonder if it works on dogs.  Looked it up and sure and behold its for dogs too!!!! (also humans!)  I put Hannah on it immediately, and within one week her tummy cleared up.  She takes it daily, one teaspoon, once daily in her food.  Shes now 10 mos old and has NEVER had another skin issue!!!  And its cheap.  I would highly recommend this for any BT owner.  Its great for their skin, makes their coat nice and shiny and also good for the kidneys.  It must say "with the Mothers" in it.  Check it out, you may be pleasantly surprised.
  • Beautiful young bully--welcome to the family!
Like @Quinnofhearts, my 2-year-old female (Murphy) topped out at a petite 50 pounds. She was 43 or so pounds at one year, tallish and lanky, a bit more full now, but still a tad leggy.
Grain-free is absolutely the way to go, and as @fullobull mentioned above, I also put a spoon of Bragg's ACV in Murf's food. She still gets an occasional rash which can almost always be linked to her rolling around in one kind of vegetation or another at the dog park. We have had good results with a spoonful of coconut oil for skin/coat issues, too. I just plop a teaspoonful in her empty dish and Murphy gobbles it right up as a treat.
  • edited July 2015
I started another thread about his rash with more pictures and detail in the health and wellness section. I started giving him Braggs apple cider vinegar yesterday, grizzly salmon oil and Nupro gold. Didn't think about adding coconut oil!

Here is his pool day video!

  • philsergeantphilsergeant Palm City, Florida, USA
Oh yes, they do love the sound and splashing of the hose pipe.... I often wonder what excites them so much based on their instinctive history... what do they relate that sound and that movement/ splashing too??? Isabella will never leave the pool side as long as the hose is in it.. (when topping up)... and Marco just couldn't give a shit.

  • Zeus update: His rash has been gone since 07/31/2015!! His bald spot on his shoulder is filling in. He is biting less now that his adult teeth are coming in. He is doing better in his puppy classes and he is being nicer to the kitten! We took him to the vet hospital on Saturday because he threw up 7 times that day. My mother in law watched him on Thursday and he threw up a plastic Christmas tree star ornament on Friday. He tried to eat her fake tree.  I was worried he had more plastic in him causing a blockage. He pooped out grass and sticks and is fine now. I was looking at your male and female bullies on the website and noticed that Ching Ching of Wendy Knoll sure gets around since he is on Zeus' pedigree too!

  • This is my first pure bred dog and bull terrier. Why is his head so pointy? Is it still growing since hes 5 1/2 months? Not that I care about showing him or anything. Just curious since I looked at the AKC standards. Here are pics of him from the side, his parents and brother.

@EllyEll - Ching Ching was a popular Stud. He was originally owned by a friend of mine James Weaver who was from Windy Knoll. After James passed away (about 9 years ago) Windy Knolls went down hill. I don't even think they are in existence any more.
Ching Ching is actually the sire of my Female Kolohe who is an old lady now. Anyhow, here's a couple photos of I took of Ching Ching from a long time ago.

  • Ching Ching looks amazing! That is my favorite color. It's crazy that you knew the owner. Small world huh? Zeus' new nickname is snipey head pigjaw based off that picture lol.

He is doing so much better with everything! Greeting people, walking on a leash, listening and biting, it's amazing how much progress he is making.

My husband and I were talking about getting another dog to keep him company. He loves other dogs so much and always wants to play with them. He isn't even phased if they are barking or growling at him, he just wants to play no matter what. We took him over to a friends house to play with their dogs and it was probably the best day of his life. He played for 3 hours straight then took a nap with them.

Our property manager approved us for another bull terrier but they all want so much money to adopt them ($400) and they usually say has to be an only dog, not many like cats either. I though a pit bull mutt would be a good compliment since they are both tough for rough play, but they said we can't have any pit bulls or pit bull mixes. Sadly I don't think rescuing another bull terrier is going to happen for us unless its a puppy, which is rare. I guess the best option is taking him to a rescue foundation and letting him find a friend to take home.

He sure is a great looking Bullie!  Great condition too! I see he doesn't get any love at all, that's why he looks as happy as a pig-in-shit!   Such a pity you couldn't get another Bullie Pup for him to grow up with... He'd probably teach him to love the cat too (that's a great photo)  You're doing a great job with him... (or is that the other way around?)

  • Here is our new rescue dog that we got on October 10th. We named her Hope. She is 1 year old and some sort of black lab mix, which is a lot easier to train! You can see they are best buds from the pictures. :D

Zeus graduated his first obedience class and starts his next one on November 22nd. He is 51 lbs now at 8 months! Hope is 40lbs at 1 year.

I'm amazed how much Zeus matured from 6-8 months. He is doing great! Except for that big hole I caught him digging earlier....sigh [-(

When people ask what its like having a Bull terrier I tell them its like having a rhino/bull that eats like a alligator and looks like a pig/hippo :))

Seriously though, he keeps swallowing stuff whole and puking it up. He has those giant teeth and decides he would rather swallow things whole. I started breaking stuff into smaller pieces.

Hope everyone is doing well! I love seeing other peoples dog pictures!

  • Zeus is so handsome!!!! I don't think he appears overweight at all!

If you're worried about him swimming, you could always buy him a lifejacket to start out with. That way he can get some practice first and then you can take it off of him but be in the pool just in case. I'm not sure bullies are really known for their buoyancy but I know there are some good swimmers out there! (my bully is NOT one of them!)
  • I don't think he likes swimming! He just follows us on the outside of the pool when we swim acting concerned. He definitely didn't like being on that float either! I had to add more cute pictures of him. Hes so sweet giving grandma kisses on the swing. :D
