A Tale of Brutus and the kitty

So i brought home a stray kitten taken to early from mom. Tiny little guy for my son. Nope didnt need another animal but well im a softee. Kid at school. I put kitten down on the couch. Brutus curious but ok. Sniff and lick. Take kitty to my bed to chill a bit with him waiting for my kids arrival home from school, and Brutus chomped it :( kitten 0 Brutus 1. Mom pissed. Wtf he lives with 2 of them. Not a single warning.....im horrified. Yes hes a dog. Yes he has high prey drive but damn. I did kick his ass he showed remorse but still.....wow...poor kitty lasted 30 min. If i would have thought for a second this would have happened i wouldnt have brought him home.....:(

It's one thing to raise a Bullie around a cat because by the time the Bull Terrier matures he or she is already well socialized with the cat. However, bringing in a new cat into a home where a full grown mature Bull Terrier has never seen, smelt, or socialized with the cat before is a recipe for disaster. The wide majority of Bull Terriers have no tolerance for making friends with a new cat that is guaranteed to show nervousness and even aggression to a dog they don't know. You might have gotten away with it if the "kitty" was actually a very small and young kitten.

The English Bull Terrier will always be a "Terrier" and to most cats that means "Terrorist."  ;)

  • He was young Steve he was around 5 wks :(. I understand Brutus's disposition being a terror in all but in my mind kitty being so young i just had more faith in my boy than that. I stand corrected. Brutus is still my boy and i still love him though. I guess no more kitties poor little fella. I feel soooo bad. Brutus keeps going out there and sniffing at his hole :(

  • Oh Leslie I'm so sorry that must of been awfull sweetie I'm stumped and really don't know what to say sophie is fine with cats but precious hates them well she hates anything outside the house it's really sad I fill for u I'm shocked as brutus gave no indication that he was not happy with the cat being there as u said he was sniffing and licking big hugs sweetie xxxx
  • Loki will chase cats if they run but since there is a cat in the neighborhood that likes dogs he's actually pretty good with them and he was socialized with Ferrets. The ferrets showed Loki who was boss pretty quickly and reminded him often with nips that they had teeth. He definitely has prey drive but never actually tried to do damage although he liked to chase.

I guess Brutus made the decision that he just doesn't wish to be friends with any cat no matter what the age. For some dogs, a cats scent, temperament, reactions, and attitude have no effect on them but to others they're quick to sense them as a prey. Terriers have a lot of natural wild drive which is often why they require proper socialization with other dogs and animals of all kinds in order to train them to get along in a normal fashion. If Brutus couldn't get along with that cute little kitty I don't think he'll ever become friends with a cat.

Leslie... Always so nice to hear your stories, they are like quality books, not to be missed.           I know you are going to hate me, but that was almost as funny as heck! I mean, beautiful little kitty and stuff, but that's real life... If it was a cute little red squirrel, it would just be nature taking its course... So bullies can't be trusted when there're tasties around... But WHO can you trust with anything these days.???... No one!  Marco went after a 40lb tortoise yesterday up the path from my house ... Although the toytoy was a big boy, if I hadn't pulled Marco off he would have found a way to crush that shell ... Nature is nature... sad about the cat though, sad.
In the beginning God created English Bull Terriers, in the image of EBT's, God created all other breeds.

  • To be honest I'm not really surprised. I think any dog if left alone with a kitten that small is at least going to try to pick it up or play with it, and in the process will kill it because it's too small. Shouldn't have been left alone with the dog at all until it was much bigger. I wouldn't even trust my bullie around a tiny kitty with me there and she's scared of adult cats. Are you sure this was out of aggression toward the cat? Maybe he was just curious...bullies are very strong, perhaps his intention was not to kill.

Anyway, sorry to hear the loss of little kitty. Any animal death can be traumatic, especially when it's at your hands (hit by car) or at the paws of your animal (squirrels, cats, etc). Try not to hold it against Brutus!!
