Treats

What are your favorite treats to give your dogs? I am still looking for some good grain free treats. I have tried a couple but Maya is not too excited about them.

  • My dog loves Orijen freeze dried treats, 100 percent meat, so obviously grain-free.  He's really liking the Lamb lately.

I bought these in a doggie boutique for him, but after it closed, I was able to order these from Amazon.  Again, freeze dried bison, so grain free.

Both of these are a good size for training.
  • He eats Orijen Red as his kibble, so Orijen agrees with perfectly.  I don't know if anyone else feeds these to their dog or not, but my dog hasn't had any problems whatsoever and loves the taste of both of these.

The Orijen are great but "ESPENSIIIIVE!"  We use the fridge variety FreshPet Dognation chicken & beef treats... The only thing they haven't managed to do when I promise them a couple of those is pick the winning Lotto numbers.

  • Yeah, was going to say...I feed her the Orijen food don't know if I can afford the treats  :))
I will give them a try though.
  • Yes, indeed, everything Orijen is expensive, but that's the food he seems to digest and thrive with the best, so anything for Rodney.

The BRAVO Freeze-dried treats go a long way.  Those seem expensive until I realize how long that bag lasts.

One economical treat that Rodney loves a lot...frozen green beans.  We pick up a huge bag at Costco, the organic frozen green beans, and keep that in the freezer.  Pretty sure he think the entire refrigerator is filled with nothing but green beans.

That's a great idea... Doesn't he get the runs from too many green beans though?

  • I use frozen beans, too, for our training. Also pieces of cut carrots or baby carrots.

I also make my own grain free dog treats with two pretty easy recipes.

The more expensive route are jerky treats. Here's one recipe:

An affordable alternative, Djamila really likes is this cookie recipe I have developed from different suggestions on the internet:

It is best to own a dehydrator for both recipes. The small home models that are totally sufficient are really affordable and do a great job. You can also dry fruit in them, such as bananas and apples, which then also in small servings make a perfect treat (also for yourself :)

  • I'm going to try those recipes, thanks Djammy.  I need a dehydrator, first, though, lol.

As far as the green beans, no, no problem with poop.  We give him a huge spoonful of organic pumpkin every day, and that has been like magic.

We only give him five green beans in a day.  When my younger son is home from college, I have to watch him closely because he's clearly tickled watching Rodney go crazy for a mere green bean. There's a good bit of, "Rodney has eaten enough green beans..."
