HELP! My dog won't listen to a word I say!

Hi, I just got a miniature bull terrier. I am having some trouble with disciplining him. He does not listen to anything I say. He is 3 months old. He lunges at my face, bites my hair, shirt, feet, or just about anything. I have bought him chewing toys since he is teething but it seems like he prefers to chew on me. He cries all night, I am guessing because his previous owners allowed him to sleep in their bed. I need help and advice ASAP!

Congratulations... That is your certificate of authenticity that you have a genuine Bull Terrier. They don't listen!!!! Welcome to the forum... You'll find all the tricks and steps to changing that situation right here on the site, just search around or enter "discipline" in the search field above. I'll try and send you some links later today. But don't think that maybe you got a "crazy" one... He just doesn't know any better yet.

  • YEA guess u ought to be glad u got a miniature one. Try wrapping a tick tock clock up n a blankie crate him set his feeding schedule U MAY WANT TO ALLOW NO FOOD AFTER 6 or what time suits u cause a hungry pup will whine till it gets food I tried that with baby TIE A WASHCLOTH WET IT AND FREEZE THAT WILL SOOTHE HIS GUMS. COLD carrots AND ITS GOOD FOR THEM check his teeth and see if he's losing puppy teeth I NEVER NOTICED DOGS TEETHING UNTIL MISS AND MISS AND BABY BOTH HAD A HARD TIME BABY IS STILL N PROCESS OF .......LAST U CAN RUB NABY ORAJEL ON USING A COTTON SWAB. MY BULL CAME ALREADY POTTY TRAINED BECAUSE MY BREEDER CRATE TRAINED HER SHE HAS BEEN THE EASIEST DOG I get them pork rolls with liver in middle they love them IF HE BITES USE PIN METHOD AND SAY NO BITE. WHEN I TAKE MISS TO POTTY I SAY LETS POTTY.LOOK UP PIN METHOD ON HERE AND USE THAT I SWEAR IT WORKS I can only imagine the poor bulls who get beat as a result that hitting a dog serves no purpose AND I FOUND OUT THAT HARNESSES MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE ..SORRY trying TO CRAM EVERYTHING IN. ANY QUESTIONS WELL ALL HELP
  • Oh my comment about bulls getting beat wasn't at u IM saying N GENERAL ALOT OF TIMES PEOPLE GET A BULL AND CANT CONTRIL THEM OR THEY CANT DEAL WITH HYPER dogs and sometimes white ones get a coat problem and NOONE wants to pay their vet bills and they get dumped off at the animal shelters
  • Hey! Thanks for your help! I am used to hyper dogs. I also have a jack russell terrier. I love hyper active dogs, lol. Keeps things interesting. I am going to try the pin method. Someone suggested spraying him water but I do not really like that idea

The Bull Terrier puppy stages are undoubtedly difficult due to their energy level and stubbornness. They say Mini Bull Terriers are even harder than Standard Bull Terriers.
I'm confident you'll have good success with the Pin method and strict discipline.

PS - I want to see a photo of this Fire Ball.   >:)

I too have a Mini that's a little over 8 weeks old.  He's a handful but learned quick what the rolled-up news paper is all about when he gets to biting.  He'll test me now and again but when he sees the news paper he'll act like an innocent baby.  Too funny.
Just let him know who's the Alpha and he'll behave....maybe ;).

You got all of that right.... Some people try sitting down and talking to their Bullies, but nothing works a well as a harmless WHACK. We use a well rounded wooden spoon... And all we need to do is take that baby out of the draw and place it on the counter, they take a seat quietly and smile at us.

  • Loki has started to try to snap at me when I tell him off the couch. I'll tell him "off!" And he just looks at me so I'll go and reach for his collar or neck scruff to push him off and he's started to snap or mouth me and basically do anything to stay on the couch. I did give him a good smack on the bum and tell him "No! Off!" The other day because it kinda ticked me off he would be snapping at me like that. He's such a stubborn little shit and he's def going through a braty teenager stage!

Welcome to Bully-World..... Just persevere with letting him know who's boss and (eventually) he'll get the message.... let others take him off the couch so that he knows they are boss too.

Don't permit him to stand his ground like that with aggression as the alpha. I would have done more than a slap on the rump. He would have been grabbed with force and pinned to the ground in under a second and held there until he submitted and had time to realize his alpha posture and aggression was a BIG no no.

Some dogs may learn from a swat on the butt while others like the Bull Terrier take a tad more of a disciplinary method. A slap on the butt works for when they get caught stealing food from the table or teething on the dining room table leg but dominance and aggression require a different form of action that projects a strong signal to them in regard to their mistake in showing dominance and/or aggression.

  • I do use the pinning method on him and have done it before when he pulled that crap about getting on the couch and also any/ every time has gotten in a tiff with another dog. He is allowed on the couch but only when invited, not when people are eating. My boyfriend also has used the pinning method on him for the same sort of crap. He mainly does this new snapping crap if we try and shove him off the couch, clip his nails or clean his ears.
  • He absolutely hates his ears being cleaned. So much so that the last time I cleaned them he was shaking really bad and tried to snap at the bottle of ear cleaner. Same story with the nail clippers. He's snapping at the clippers not at me but the couch situation is directed me and I'm not sure if it's because I've grabbed him by the scruff of his neck to get him off the couch and it hurt him or if it is a challenge on his part.

When you get yeast under control there hardly is much ear cleaning required..... Obviously keep doing it to make sure... our kids love having their ears cleaned... as soon as they see the cotton wool balls and the lavender cleaner they come running over..... They never come running to have their nails done though ... but I find that if you file their nails twice a week it is not such big, long job, (even with 32 toes to do) and they don't mind the filing... we do it while we watch TV.... it's clipping they hate.

  • He likes to dig so he's constantly getting dirt, sand and whatever else in his ears.

  • Hi Loki with miss my bull I started taking her to pet smart well at 14 months she's FINALLY CALMED DOWN. SO I CAN CLIP AND DREMEL MYSELF I bought a comfort muzzle AND TRIED USING IT ONCE MY STRONG DADDY AND HUBBY CLDNT HOLD HER DOWN!!!!!!! I THINK miss matured a bit and now I can DREMEL her nails. Now the longer their nails grow so does the quick so I'm doing miss every week so the quick will shorten up.
Now if u DREMEL BE CAREFUL IT VAN TAKE CHUNKS OF FLESH OUT. I SET IT ON LOW AND ONLY DREMEL FOR ABOUT 5 SEC GO TO TJE NEXT PIGGY AND SO ON THEN ILL GO BAK TO THE FIRST ONE but I'd take miss to pet smart NOW SHE GLADLY LETS ME DO HER NAILS. YEA the whole group of terriers R HYPER. OH THE WORST IS THE WHITE WESTHIGHLAND TERRIERS oh they r hard when they r pups. Mine her name is Bianca she's the alpha but I don't let her be CAUSE IM THE BOSS. but OMG she was hyper. A toe licker she was. She licks licks licks. The rot is calmer and more obedient BUT SHES NOTHING LIKE MY BULL TERROR. BIG DIFFERENCE IN PERSONALITIES. I LOVE UR LOKI HES A HANDSOME BULLIE I WANT A BLACK BRINDLED ONE.
  • ;;) ;;) they r so stubborn it's untrue and it don't get no easier the older they get lol Phil sergeant advised me on the wooden spoon for a tap on the bum to stop the puppy stage things of everything your bully is doing it did work my sophie is 2 today and she's still a madam every command has to be told 10 or 15 times before she will obey stubborn to the core even if I'm there for 15 minutes I have to follow it threw good luck with your bully .

@bigbear1tracy.... If that's a beach you've got to be in Ireland or Wales or somewhere..... Didn't they tell them that they are supposed to wear and grind those pebbles right down until they are beach sand for heaven's sake!!! But your Bullie is beautiful... and the trouble is they are actually obedient, they know exactly what you want from them and what they are meant to do.... they just don't give a c---p!
