Kidney failure

It is with a heavy heart i stop in to say hi to all who know me here and my trials and tribute to this wonderful breed. Cleo has been diagnosed with kidney failure and has approx a month left here with us. Whos to blame i dont know, Meds, breeding, genetics. For those of you who have helped along my journey with her just want to say Thankyou from the bottom of my heart couldn't have gotten thru without you.

Oh! My GOD! I can't believe it, she is not even 6, right??.. Holy Shit I am so pissed off, it's just not ****ing fair at all. I don't want to know if a vet is responsible (in my experience they mostly are), because I'd just kill whoever was responsible. I am SOOOOO Sorry, for you, as much as I am for Cleo.  This is my favourite photo of Cleo, that Green eye was always a treat for me, such a strong girl.... Gotta go now, I can't see the screen clearly any more... This is just not RIGHT!!!!!!!!image

This is devastating news. I can't begin to tell you how sorry I am to hear this news because I know how much both your Bull Terriers mean to you.

I just posted on Facebook last week about the influx of Kidney problems that are popping up in a few bloodlines. Cleo is the third Bull Terrier I have heard about in the past 2 weeks with a liver problem. The other two Bull Terriers passed away prematurely as well. One of them wasn't even 2 years old yet. Sadly the owner/breeder is trying to keep the health problem hush hush because they'd rather turn a blind eye to the known genetic fault. It's not hardly the first one within this bloodline that died of kidney disease. It truly saddens me to know end.

People think I'm crazy because I look in depth into bloodlines by checking death records on grandparents and great grand parents. It's sad to see trends in premature deaths in certain bloodlines that many today consider to be reputable simply because of champion titles.

I ca imagine how much attention you must be providing Cleo in her last days and I know how sad it is for you and your whole family. I've been through t before and the pain is no less than losing a family member especially when your dog is in fact a "family member."

Cherish the time you have now with Cleo and let her know how much joy she has brought within her whole family. Give her the special treats she's longed for. Gosh, I wish I was near by so I could treat her to a big fat steak. Please give her a big hug for me.

    I'm so sorry Leslie.

@Leslie. Sorry I got your kids mixed up... for some reason your photos often don't post... Are you using .jpegs and less than 2mb in size?  Are you selecting the file on your hard drive directly, or linking to a web based library?
    My thoughts are with you.

  • Oh my gosh this just breaks my heart to read.  I am so sorry to hear this and I can only imagine the pain that you are going through right now.  I am going to say a special prayer for you and wanted you to know that I will be thinking of you during this time.

  • Their jpeg phil. Im on a gs5 as i dont have a computer. Thankyou all. It is very heartbreaking. She has always had issues such as incontinence, corns on her feet. I could play the blame game all day but in the end its my fault. I did however give her the best life i could with endless love. For those whom dont know me please be aware of your breeder and bloodlines as Steve said above. I did know because of the proin they would be hard on her liver but she is going to leave us at a young 5 yrs old. Devestated is all i can say.

No Leslie this is by no mean your fault at all so don't blame yourself. Yes, she may not have been born with the best health aspects genetically but she damn sure had the best owner who provided her the love and attention she deserved. That goes the same for Brutus in which you never gave up on and molded into a wonderful Bullie when there was a time his temperament was in question. I commend you for the way you raise your Bullies and the love you provide them. Cleo was dealt a bad hand when she was born with her health ailments but she lives a life in a loving home where she's cherished. There was nothing you could have done to change the outcome of her health conditions that caught up to her after 5 years.  Try your best to cherish the good times you've shared with her and give her all the love you can before she passes over the rainbow bridge.

  • Thanks Steve. The what ifs just keep going thru my head..... if i hadent given her the proin, took her to the vet earlier, took her to MSU when she was a pup. Its just hard.

  • I'm very sorry for that bad news. From i've read you were a very good with him and provided him with everything he needed especialy love. I started crying when i read this topic, i can't explain in words how sory i am. But i think you also know that true saying that ~all dogs go to heaven~ and i sure that it's true. Be strong and love him.
  • Last night about 8:30pm Cleo passed with ease. My little boy had a look of utter sadness and just fell into my arms but he needed to go with her 5yrs old or not and i couldnt deny him that. She was wearing one of Elis sweatshirts as she couldnt maintain her body temp. Anymore and my Vet come on his day off just to do this for us. Utter sadness......thats all for now....

  • OMG, I feel almost ashamed of the fun post I just started a minute ago.

    So sorry for your loss!
I can feel it like yesterday how we had to let Fancy go. It still hurts.
I am sure, Cleo had the most wonderful and happy five years a Bull Terrier could have!
Hope that the wounds of the loss start to scar pretty soon.
They will never completely heal, only because they have such a huge place in our hearts!

    R.I.P. Cleo

My thoughts are with you, such a heart wrench I know... we couldn't think straight for a whole week after we lost our last girl.  For those many of us that are going to hell, don't expect to find Cleo there, she went the other way.

We take the kids to Home Depot every Saturday morning.. (to buy all the hundreds of things we need to keep the homestead glued together every week) and they staff there love to fuss over the kids...  One of the cashiers that we see every week burst into tears when she saw Isabella, she had to put her 14 year old Lab down this week.... It;s so hard when you find so many people so dependent on their dogs for sanity .... In the old days we used to be dependent on other human friends... guess that went to crap for most earthlings.

Leslie.... I don't know/ understand anything about divorce, but I do know that if he could give up on you Plus a wonderful Bullie, at the time u were losing another beautiful Bullie, he totally must have been a dick. I truly hope you find a living environment that enables you to build a new home for all your kids, and that God finds a way to replace Cleo in your life as well... Remember, dogs are Way Way better than people.

  • He has a lot to learn Phil unfortunately he is gonna have to fly solo because i cant fix stupid. Thankyou for the kind words as we hope as well that we find something that suits all our needs. Im afraid to see Brutus unhappy without his space but if all else fails my mom will take him till i can find something suitable for him. Im looking at a place on a lake local to where im at now and in the county with whom i work for. My fingers are crossed !!! Nothing will replace Cleo but i sure as hell will do whatever i can to take care of her brother now and live life like its suppose to be lived.....happliy without the negatives :)

  • Cleo was on proin since she was 1 1/2 yrs old. I still think that being on meds for so long affected her kidneys. Ive never been a fan of long term drug use. However it did have to be controlled somehow. I just wish i would have used a diaper instead of the meds. I might be just still searching for why i lost her at such a young age though. But she was on 50 mg. A day thats alot. :(
Your actions speak so loudly I cannot hear your words.
  • BulliesofNCBulliesofNC Richlands, NC
Don't beat yourself up Leslie thinking the Meds caused her misfortune. Sadly there are more and more EBT's passing away prematurely due t Kidney failure (most coming from the same bloodlines) that were never on any form of medication. It's most often a hereditary disease. Cleo had a health issue when she was born due to her bladder so I'm sure she needed the meds to help control her bladder. Some of the reasons for her bladder problem may have been due to the underlining kidney problem she had all along. There's no one to blame except Cleo's parents who passed down the genetic fault.

  • I know :( I just want a reason !! Years ago i was told she wouldnt have a full life because of all the issues. Sad is all. The proin was no benefit to her kidneys failure but her genetics took her early.....uggggimage
