Sometimes a little whack isn't a bad thing with Bull Terriers. Obviously the objective isn't to hurt them but sometimes pointing your finger at them and saying "No" isn't an effective training technique for this breed. If it were me, I would wait to catch your puppy in the act and when i did I would run up on her so she hears me coming quickly which will gain attention and I would grab the scruff of her neck, push her nose close to her accident, yell "NO", and immediately take her outside. Additionally, I would praise her every time she uses the bathroom outside. Bull Terriers are quick to understand what is rewarding by their owners and what get's them in trouble. You have to be consistent and it takes time but they are smart and if you're putting forth the effort she will learn fast.

  • Please look into Crate Training over the web. It is in fact the easiest way to housebreak a puppy. However, it required owners consistency and commitments for the first few weeks, some even months. But i never come across a pup need more than a month. And the crate size is important. The right size is 30% success.

Do not let her have any negative association when she tearing up the pee pads. When she trying to do that, use a toy to distract her from the pee pad, play with her. Introduce her that she should play with the toy, and it is more fun.

The reason for not to punish her when she is tearing up the pee pads is simple.

    - She is only doing that because she do not know that is her toilet. She will not play with that when she understand it is her toilet. And most of the commercial pee pads are scented to attract puppies.

    - It is very confusing for a puppy that when you yelled "No", bring her away, away from the pee pads at this stage (Before she knows how to pee poo on it). Just imagine, she may be wondering, should i approach the pee pads or not? I am being punish for approaching or tearing up?

It is the same as some of the owner will lock their pup in the toilet until the pup do their business, then let out. After awhile, they will face a problem that the pup will pee and poo on the floor mats in front of the toilet door. As the pup, have a negative association for the toilet of being lock up.

  • I found yelling NO did nothing with Maya. She would just stare at me like, hey I'm peeing here mom.
Like @BulliesofNC said running up to them quickly and making noise worked the best for me. It would startle her and stop her mid act.
Funny how quick they catch on though. Maya was the hardest puppy I've had to potty train, and then one day she just got it.
  • I personally have never really understood the positive purpose of pee pads. To me it just teaches dogs that it's okay to pee inside. :-q

But I am a huge advocate of using crates!! Always crate when you are not there. I crated at night as well up until a certain age. Yeah she peed all over her stuff when she was really little, but honestly that's one of the things that stopped first.

When I would catch her in the act, I would run up to her very quickly (a large animal approaching you when you're in a vulnerable position can be scary I guess) and I would grab the scruff of her neck until she stopped. The only reason I waited was because I used to pick her up midstream and take her to the door, but that only made more mess... lol, so anyway, the grab on the scruff was pretty firm, she did not like it, but I would not rub her nose in it. She knew what I was getting her for. And then we would go outside. When she would potty outside (make sure you have a word for it, that way you can say "go potty" while she's doing it and she will get the gist) I would praise her a LOT. People must have thought I was a little weird.

The greatest thing about my dog is that potty training was the easiest training she had. Biting...jumping...stealing things...not so much. But she was probably potty trained by 4-4.5 months old, and I remember her last pee accident (with exceptions of illness and surgeries) was around 6 months old.
    Good luck!!!
  • Yea we didn't use pee pads either. Those are just confusing the dog in my opinion. Loki only had two accidents inside the house and I believe those were more our fault because we didn't pick up on his cues that he needed to go out. Loki was very easy to potty train.

Since coming home last Saturday, I place my MBT outside every half hour or when I notice him doing the poo-poo shuffle.  I do have a pad placed in the laundry room for those incidents that I can't get to him fast enough.

Funny, If he is doing the poo-poo shuffle every half an hour there's got to be something else going on :-). But, if he is, or looks like he is going to have a bowel movement.... Pick him up, shout NO! NO! and take him (quickly) to the pad, put him on there and say "good boy, good boy" with love and kisses,... and he begins very quickly to associate the differences....   When he poops outside is the time for mega-praise and treats.... they very quickly learn the smells and feelings (and responses) and get the notion that pooping with grass under your feet has the best result!

The operative word was "OR" ... ;) .

He woke me up at 2:30am this morning and I put him on his pad in the laundry room where he had a massive poo-poo then put him right back in his crate till 6 am .  He's doing real good.
