My bull terrier is possessive/agressive

Hello all, I'm new here. I have a 3 year old male bull terrier-megatron. He lives inside with my wife and I. Over the past 6-8 months our little guy has started growling in a few situations. We thought it was because he was not neutered so about 3 months ago we had him fixed. Much to my surprise it hasn't changed this behavior.

So I am hoping for help before we make a trip again to the vet. The 2 situations are as follows:
1. If he is laying in bed with me and my wife comes to pet him he growls usually light growling but sometimes full on nasty growling
2. The much more common event. Usually it happens at night. We keep him in a room while we are at work. We leave his food and water bowls in there. A lot of time late in the evenings if he has just ate and we need to go into that room or go into the garage he growls at us. And has even bit at a friend who was trying to leave.
I'm convinced the 2nd is due to his food but I need to figure out a solution.

I appreciate any help in advance. He is on totw and only takes benedyrl

It's hard to give a short answer with brief description and without understanding the history or current disposition of the dog... (If you had posted early we could have saved you the vet fees, and him his goolies, on the neutering idea).  Is he well socialized? Does he get lots of exercise? Not left alone for long periods?
If he has no other contributing factors you are just going to have to be braver than brave (because he can't sense your fear) and begin reprimanding and pinning him everything he shows any sign of aggression.  He has got to (re-)learn that you are boss. You wife needs to discipline him too.

Unfortunately there's no way to sit with him and have a quiet chat... he must LEARN that it's wrong all over again.
In the beginning God created English Bull Terriers, in the image of EBT's, God created all other breeds.
  • You are right I gave a short description so let me expand now that I'm not on my phone.

We have had him since he was a puppy, we had no issues behavior wise with him.  We do both work but he is let out at lunch time by my wife when she comes home for lunch.  Other times my grandmother comes and takes him for long walks during the day.  I would say he gets alot of exercise but will admit I do need to make sure everyday when we come home from work.

He has been around several other dogs and gets along with them even when they eat his food.

Generally when he growls we very firmly tell him to sit hurt his feelings calling a bad dog, so maybe I can get opinions on the best way for discipline.  No hitting is involved.

We started hand feeding him yesterday as I read on the site which at first he didnt like but his belly quickly made him accept.

Can someone point me to the pinning method and I'll give that a try.

Please let me know if you need more information.

Sounds like he needs some rude awakening as to who's the Alpha. I'm confident the Pin Method will help out tremendously. Here's a link that will provide you a lot of helpful information as well as proper techniques for using the Pin Method. - http://www.bulliesofnc.com/BTforum/discussion/comment/14620/#Comment_14620

  • Sometimes when u allow a dog to share your quaters ie your bed sofas etc it makes them fill that they r the alpha because they r trying to claim that space that u r allowing him to share with u I'd remove him from the bedroom straight away and definitely not allow him on the bed or sofas if u do he needs to know that the humans are the alpha and that behaviour is not acceptable good luck .
