Play

A few days a week I take Maya to daycare and they've told me she constantly tries to play with dogs who growl/bark, basically just don't want to play. I'm not going to scold her for wanting to play, she's a dog (puppy at that) and it's what she does. I'm more worried about her not understanding that a growl or nip means she should move on. I've witnessed it myself with my parent's dog, he is usually very playful with her but when he has had enough he will growl at her. She doesn't stop and I will have to separate them or constantly distract her with something else.
Anyone have any tips? I'm starting her on training next week and hoping they will have some ideas..

I have no answers for you, but I can relate.

Chooba has actually been banned from one of the day care facilities in my city. @ 5months they put him in with the large active breeds ( because he was to crazy for those his size ) and they decided he was just to rambunctious for them. He doesn't want to fight though. As soon as the other dog gets visibly mad chooba instantaneously rolls over and becomes submissive, @ which point he's been nipped on his belly a few times @ the dog park. He has learned that @ that point its time to find another option for play.

He has been to both puppy socialization and beginners training courses and passed both. He listens and minds his commands when he is the only dog in the room. But as soon as he has another four legged playmate his DNA takes over. Game on.

Posted these before, but these pics are a perfect example. Here he is @ 5 months vs a full size great dane. To me, the dane looks a little worried by the second pic

  • My husband and I were just sitting outside with Rosco and his sister watching them play and he plays SO ROUGH!  She is a trooper and goes along with him, but he will literally roll her in the yard when they play chase and she is 40 lbs!   I don't have the answer, it just seems to me that they play rougher than most other dogs, at least my boy does.  BTW, Chooba is PRETTY!!
  • My miss will AGRAVATE TH
E DICKENS OUT OF BIANCA till b bites then chases her. Now I'm pup sitting dads new Rotty pup AND SHE CONSTANTLY BITES MISS her face is raw miss lays her ears back and let's her bite I'm suspecting miss is getting tired of it SHE WENT GOT HER BIG BUSIBONE OUT OF HER CRATE FOR HER AND THE PUP TO PLAY W WITH. Miss loves being chased but I only play that indoors n case she ever decided TO RUN shed think it was a game AND RUN INTO DANGER. All puppies nip and chew SO IF U GET ONE BULLIE PUP make sure your tough enough to stand a few bites TILL THEY LEARN. IM LUCKY TO HAVE MY NOSE I kissed her so much during that time. SERIOUS. She was only playing back MISS HAS NEVER DONE ANYTHING THAT WASNT MY FAULT that's y my biggest mistake was NOT GETTING TWO BULLIES AT ONCE but chooba miss is like that too Sometimes she will sometimes not. THATS WHAT IS FUNNY Later on...... I'm glad miss is so good natured. I have looked up bullies from fighting to playing and I suspect no other dog can beat a BULLIE with saying that THERES THE FACTOR OF OMG THINK ABOUT THE POOR DOG that bull got ahold of IM SUSPECTING THE DAMAGE WOULD BE GREAT.
My biggest mistake was robbing miss of a play mate. So her first heat I got Bianca from dads. And boy Bianca bites miss if she keeps on which she DOES. SO I took a chance AND LET MISS AND ROTTIE PLAY it seems as if miss shows her how if feels being bitten and miss bites her ear. The ROTTIES pup is as relentless as miss. BULL TERROR ARE A STRONG POWERFUL MAGNIFICENT ANIMAL mines my BEST FRIEND I hope she feels the same way . I was way off I was worried that miss could be aggressive THAT WAS MY MISTAKE IM PROUD OF MISS BIANCA AND BABY a bull westie and Rotty . just watch and prevent any fights cause other dogs. I KNOW ALOT DAD LET HIS FIRST BULL TERRIER HAVE NO RULES AND RESTRICTIONS HE RIPPED THE FACE OFF A DOG AND WAS SHOT SHORTLY THERE AFTER by the owner of the dog just saying if dad WAS A BETTER BULL TERRIER OWNER AT THE TIME THAT WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED. HE DID BETTER WITH HIS SECOND BULLIE SQUEAK. SHE LIVED a long full life. I don't know about aggressive bullies I'm starting to be a firm believer its how they are raised. ONE THINGS FOR SURE ITS NEVER A DULL MOMENT WITH A BULL TERROR.       I SURE LOVE IT
  • Guys I thought about this IVE HURT MYSELF ON THE STUDDED COLLARS. AND THERE'S A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STUDDED AND SPIKED collars. I looked them up THANK GOODNESS I NEVER ORDERED the spiked I injured myself with the studded ..Ask anyone I was jokingly saying if I get another pet I'm using my vet as a reference. I try to share what LITTLE I KNOW AND ITS HELPFUL LEARNING FROM UR EXPERIENCES. I CAN READ THESE. GIGGLE AND RELATE or is it EMPATHY joking. IM TRYING TO FIND THE BALANCE and the Otto story was dads BULLIE his first with that ded???mange stuff AND AFTER THAT DAD DID ALOT BETTER AND HE LEARNED LESSONS but it costed Otto a short life SO THE LESSON IS I'm still learning my BULLIE she's 13 months old I TRY TO SAFEGUARD HER TOO MUCH but I'm obligated in ways I have to enrich these puppies lives AND MISS COULDVE BEEN HURT depriving her of other dogs. And none of us can help what other dogs are capable of doing Like if miss got attacked by another dog idk what to do I've seen PEOPLE BLOODIED BREAKING UP DOGS AND MY FRIENDS GRANDSON Hit A MAN RUN IN FRONT OF HIS CAR SAVING HIS DOG that poor man didn't make it. And before I got Bianca miss RAN ACROSS THE STREET TO SEE SOME DOGS AT MY GMAS AND SHE COULD'VE BEEN KILLED so thank heavens it wasn't a busy street. That was the day she TOOK OFF RUNNING THE LEASH BURNT MY HAND. SO MAYBE IM SPENDING TOO MUCH TIME PLAYING WITH THESE PUPPIES BUT THE OTHER SIDE IS IF I DONT MOLD MY BULLIE TO BE A GOOD GIRL there'll surely be problems later on. Like in my area IVE SAFE GUARDED MISS AGAINST THEFT and that's almost a 24 hour job me and hubby did one errand for 21/2 hours AND RUSHED CAUSE MISS WAS HOME CRATED and I know to watch vets but I have to say vet bills can add up if u don't watch what they eat and what they can get into. I FREAKED OVER MISS GETTING WHELPS AND STEVE AND DIANE HELPED SO MUCH it happened on a sat CLEARED UP BY MONDAY
IM STILL EVER MORE SO GRATEFUL FOR MY BULLIE THE BEST PRESENT I EVER GOT!!!! FEB 5 ILL JAVE MISS FOR A YEAR and the roads NOT OVER HOPEFULLY 13 more years of my miss AND IVE DONE IT WITH THE HELP OF U GUYS. ITS ALMOST A JOB TAKING CARE OF THEM but like I told the vet OH ITS SO FUN WATCHING THEM PLAY AND HES LIKE UR PLying and Saddened by the thought NO IM NOT PLAYING I WATCH THEM PLAY.
One more thing I got a comfort muzzle to clip Miss's nails myself well of coarse SHE TRIED TO HET IT OFF SO I TOLD DAD HOLD HER ITLL ONLY TAKE A MIN WELL DAD AND HUBBY COULDNT HOLD HER and IVE HAD TO BAND AID DAD UP A BUNCH so now MISS IS BIGGER AND HE HAS TO ACCEPT HER EXUBERANCE....
IT SEEMS LIKE IF U LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT ONCE ITS FOREVER SET IN STONE...BUT I LOVE IT.
I HAVE TO SAY THEYRE THE BEST SNUGGLE BUDDIES AT TIMES. ME MYSELF ID MUCH RATHER SPEND TIME WITH MY BULL WESTIE short term Rotty pup THAN WITH MOST HUMANS MISS KNOWS AS BY MOM AND DAD. THEN GRANPA. MY MOM won't put her hand near Miss's mouth.
That's y I posted the incident of my neighbors toddler .SO ILL KEEP MY EYE ON THEM STILL CAUSE IM thinking MISS IS STILL LEARNING AND SO AM I.
I KNOW SOME BULLIES CAN HAVE PROBLEMS EACH ONE IS DIFFERENT SO YEA ITS JUST THE PUPPY STAGE IDK WHAT ILL DO WHEN SHES NOT A PUP. MISSY WOULDN'T BE MISS. OH WELL IM up on POOP MACHINE PATROL I better TAKE A 430AM NAP.
  • Yeah, I'm a little worried she is going to be banned too! I'm just worried she's going to get nipped by another dog who is fed up.
They need to start an a Bull Terrier daycare! Can you imagine, haha.

Some may disagree with the process, but the results are evident.
The best teacher for a dog, is another dog.

By allowing Chooba to be nipped, but staying close to make sure it does not get out of hand, Chooba has learned that when asked to stop ( by another dog ), he stops.  This method should only be used when they are still puppies as an older EBT may return aggressive canine to canine correction with aggressive insubordinance.  The remaining issue is the overly submissive dogs that allow it.

Unfortunately, my specific problem is 2 fold
-this specific day care is majority submissive.
-one of the perks there were full time web cams so the owners could personally monitor theyre dogs throughout the day.  Anyone who frequents the dog park has seen those that do not understand canine behavior and flip out continuously over normal dog to dog interactions.

I wonder how many calls the daycare recieved from submissive owners referring to they're submissive 90 lb german shepard being tackled  by a 40 lb, 5 month old EBT on camera.
  • I'm having the same problems with Loki my 6 month old bull terrier. Most of the time he gets along with all the dogs but he seems to bully smaller young puppies. There has been at least 3 occasions that he has met a new 3-4 month old puppy and attacked it. Male and female. I'm thinking maybe these young puppies don't know how to properly greet/submit to older dogs yet and that may be what is setting him off? He has always been very alpha/dominant. No one was hurt in these scuffles but definitely very frightened and looked/sounded serious. Everyone just says to Neuter him but our vet said to wait until he is at least 1.5 years old and I am wanting to show him for conformation so I'm really not wanting to fix him at all. Anyone ever have problems with their dogs bullying younger puppies? He doesn't try this with the older dogs at all.

Loki, when you say " attacked" what exactly do you mean ? Snarling, biting? Or just rough play? If he is a true Bullie he will play rough and kind... He probably wants to hurt no one.... But he is just boisterous and less bold dogs get intimidated... Sometimes they snap back and it starts things off. Ideally you will find a friend with some BIG strong playful, non aggressive dogs. Let him play with them. A) he'll love it, B) he'll get some hard knocks and start to appreciate what it's like being tossed around and body slammed.... Which will make him ease up on less "strong" dogs.
In the beginning God created English Bull Terriers, in the image of EBT's, God created all other breeds.
  • No it's attack with those smaller pups. He plays hard with the bigger dogs and there's growling with them too. He's been socialized a lot since I brought him home at 8 weeks old but with those smaller pups if they don't submit right to him he attacks them. I'm talking full on snarling, biting and shaking meanwhile the poor puppy is screaming. No blood drawn but he can look pretty serious. One person said they wouldn't be bringing their pup back to the puppy play because of it.
  • I've never had a problem with the older larger dogs with him just younger, smaller puppies. He gets knocked around and rolled by bigger dogs all the time but no agressiveness from that unless another dog snaps at him and then he attacks which has happend with a cattle dog mix that's around Loki's age at puppy play.
  • The dog Loki is playing tug with is named Tucker and he's the cattle dog mix Loki got into it with. They didn't like each other since the first time they met and I was amazed that they were playing well together (for about 5 minutes and then tucker snapped at Loki and Loki attacked him) the little puppy to the right of Loki was attacked also. I have a video of them playing. While Loki and tucker were playing tug the little pup tried to join in and I'm the video you can see Loki all of a sudden drop the toy and go after the pup. I didn't catch the actual attack on video because I dropped the phone to break it up. I'm not sure how to get him to stop this bullying of the little ones. I've been grabbing him as soon as I see it start and I hold Loki down on his side and "submit him" until I think he's calm. This has worked before but the last incident with a 3 month old Doberman pup (female) it did not work. He immediately got up and charged her again (3 times until I called it quits and left the park with him) everyone looks at me like I have a vicious dog and he's really not that way at all but he's definitely a bully to the little guys.

  • Have u tried holding the Lil ones and SHOWING HIM they're NOT TO BE HURT I did that with miss and SHES DONE WELL. NO BLOOD WAS DRAWN THATS A GOOD THING. I JUST ASKED DAD AND he said A BULL TERRIER IN FIGHT MODE won't stop till a) its dead or B) they think its dead. Back to the Otto story dad said a pit jumped him and Otto pinned him down TILL HE QUIT MOVING . All dog fights I've seen I was little I remember this man was bloodied. Dad said self confidence of the bull they WONT LOOK FOR IT BUT THEY WONT TAKE IT.dad said they're bred for fighting I said I THOUGHT THEY BTED THAT OUT HE SAID THEYLL REMEMBER AND KILL OR TRY TO IF GIVEN A CHANCE THATS THE KEY IF GIVEN A CHANCE.
    Don't give him a chance. There'll come a time
  • Therell come a time ULL GET HURT BREAKING UP A DOG FIGHT IVE SEEN PEOPLE BLOODIED WITH LITTLE DOGS I HAD TO ASK DAD WHAT TO DO IF a dog jumped the Rotty HE TOLD ME TO STAY OUT OF IT AND DROP THE LEASH I AVOID SITUATIONS THAT I CANT CONTROL.
DAD SAID miss won't always be a puppy AND ALL THE GOOD MANNERS NOW WONT MAKE A DIFFERENCE IF ITS A FIGHT dad said it's second nature instinct will kick in. I SURE HOPE U DONT GET HURT.
So ull need to show him the Lil ones ARENT TO B HURT AND U R THE BOSS. PINNING
I MYSELF GOT MAD WHEN LITTLE DOGS BIT MISS I MEAN MAD SO I HAD TO RELAX A LITTLE
WHEN WE BROUGHT BABY HOME SHE BIT MISS AND DAD SAID DONT LET HER HURT THIS PUP AND IT WASNT MISS I GOT MAD
SO AFTER LETTING THEM PLAY I HAD TO PICK UP THE PUP AND TELL MISS NOOOO. AND SO FAR I THINK SHES LEARNED BOUNDARIES.
ME MYSELF PHILSGT had a good idea but I will not ever put miss in a situation if I CAN HELP IT FOR THAT TO HAPPEN
SO IF ITS HAPPENING ITS UR FAULT ITS ALWAYS OUR FAULT AS DOG OWNERS.
LIKE I've been like she's my lapdog and PEOPLE R SCARED OF HER MY MOM SAID TREAT HER LIKE A NEWBORN BABY AND I HAVE.
I HAD NEVER HEARD MISS GROWL well at vets a boxer growled she growled back I WALKED HER OUTSIDE
But PEOPLE ARE SCARED OF THESE DOGS AND A FIGHT WILL GIVE THIS BREED A BAD RAP
AT PETSMART THEY DIDNT WANNA CLIP HER NAILS BECAUSE OF HER BIG MOUTH HEAD AND MUSCLES AND LUCKILY NOTHING HAPPENED she was actually scared and was shaking.
Yea ID FIND HIM DIFFERENT PLAY MATES AND TRY TO TEACH HIM NOT TO HURT THE LITTLE ONES.
It seems like these bullies REMEMBER EVERYTHING AND IM SURE HELL REMEMBER THE LITTLE DOGS.

THAT WAS WELL SAID ANOTHER DOG IS A GREAT TEACHER FOR A DOG. SORRY FOR SHARING THE OTTO STORIES dad was young AND HIS FIRST BULL AND DAD LET HIM ROAM FREE YEA HE DAMAGED THAT DOG WITH HIM HAVING A CAST ON HIS LEG.
THE OTTO STORIES are a PRIME EXAMPLE OF A BULLIE WITH NO STRUCTURE
I don't know what to do IF IT WAS A DOG FIGHT ID CRAP MY PANTS AND CRY
So I'm trying to teach mine and avoid situations CAUSE THESE R THE STRONGEST DOGS IN THE WORLD I DONT THINK ANY DOG COULD BEAT A BULLIE WITH THAT SAID THEY ARE CAPABLE OF GREAT DAMAGE
IM A.D.D. ATTN DEFICIT DISORDER I hope I explained it all right I don't want to be misconstrued
I get disgusted with people who fight these bulls or ANYDOG
But like miss and the Rotty pup I STOOD OVER THEM AS THEY PLAYED AND WHEN MISS GOT TO ROUGH I STOPPED IT PICKED UP THE PUP AND TOLD HER NO BITE which was pointless cause the pup was play biting miss THAT MISS STARTED GETTING TOYS AND BONES TO LET ME KNOW IT WAS PLAY CAUSE AT FIRST IT SEEMED VISCIOUS TO ME and I wasn't gonna let them do it.
THEN I REALIZED THAT IT WAS PLAY
HES A BEAUTIFUL BULLIE THEY ALL ARE
I HAD TO REALIZE A FEW NIPS AND SUCH WERE TYPICAL PUPPY PLAY BUT ITS SEEMS LIKE A REAL FINE LINE.
DAD said if a fight ever happened to not put a stick to pry her mouth open he said pour water in the nose to get their mouth open
But I like watching them play AND ME ID MUCH RATHER BE SAFE THAN SORRY
  • Max Jr. got kicked out of doggie day care after about 1 year.

Max graduated to the large, active dog play area when he was about 8 months old or so.

Everything went fine for 6 months and then the doggie day care people started to get concerned, apparently Max was going after the largest dogs and pinning them down (he must have been about 70 lbs at the time).

I was very surprised that this allegedly happened since Max has been very well socialized since very young. We live in the country and Max constantly plays with neighbors dogs without a problem. He has never been the instigator of a fight, but he does not take kindly to aggressive behavior from other males.

My feeling is that the doggie day care center is overly sensitive and cautious, especially when it comes to powerful breeds such as EBT. They are probably not used to that level of intensity of play. That may also be understandable from a liability perspective.

Since then Max has matured a lot, he still plays rock hard with our female lab, but no aggression.
  • I really think that these small younger pups haven't learned to properly socialize yet and Loki thinks he need to teach these lil ones how to submit. It's like the pups give some sort of cue that Loki is picking up on that he feels is disrespectful. Because he runs up to them like he would any other dog and the pup doesn't submit the correct way or something and that sets Loki off. I am a little worried that he might do more damage next time so I've stopp taking him to puppy play and I only take him to the dog park now. Thankfully the last owner of the little pincher girl didn't freak out when this happened but it's quite embarrassing for me when he does it. I've socialized him from a young age, taken him to obedience classes and he's incredibly spoiled . So it's not like I haven't put in the time. He's a very smart boy, almost too smart for his own good and he's got more classes coming up in January. we are working towards CGC but this behavior of him attacking baby pups is not CGC behavior. I'm hoping with more structure and work he will stop this nonsense and I will have 4 weeks of no work to work on it with him (having my gallbladder removed) but we will see I guess.

  • I'm a merchandiser for coca cola so I lift heavy soda for 8+ hours a day. My surgeon said that he doesn't want to see me back in the O.R to replace torn sutures so he said id have to take 3-4 weeks off. I'm totally ok with that lol.

  • Yea he's A VERY VERY VERY HANDSOME BRINDLE BULLY . I think it's us learning our dogs
miss would bombard the little ones and they would bite her ANZ BOY I GOT MAD but she should be tough enough to take it
she bombarded the rot pup and she would bite miss I HAD TO PICK THE PUPPY UP and SHOP MISS she wasn't to be hurt and it took a month of supervised play MISS HAS SCABS ON HER JAWS FROM THE PUPPY MISS HAS MET HER MATCH the pup loves playing miss will grab her ear and drags her ten plus feet the pup jumps up REDDY FOR MORE
MY FRIEND yesterday saw them playing and was like Jo look what miss is doing AND I TOLD HER TO WATCH and see the whole thing OF COARSE SHE FELL IN LOVE WITH MY MISSY DOG EVEN MORE
I AM SUPRIzed miss hasn't snapped but miss shows her what it feels like
in the mornings miss wakes up potties comes in and the pup runs up and bites miss they'll wrestle around for an hour then chew their bones
on the little ones I always kept miss on a leash cause she's so excited it's bombarding on little ones though find a friend with a little dog and spend one on one time showing him how to interact with the Lil ones I did that and it's worked I HAVE TO SAY IT'S THE rotty pup
so find a friend get a Lil one hold u r dog and let the little one smell his butt you'll have to make sure you are holding him don't give him a chance to bite and he should submit to that That makes u the boss
I had to DO that last night my friend brought her weenie dog down and I had to do that with Bianca and her THAT LEFT ME THE BOSS AND BIANCA SUBMITTED DURING INTRODUCTION
