He's handsome!  Maybe try some chicken or beef added in?  Rosco will not eat canned dog food at all, we tried blue buffalo and taste of the wild.  When he was younger he would gobble it up (he is 10 months now).  He did seem to go through a little stage where he was trying to protest regular dog food since my husband was spoiling him with snackies.  I think he thought he would get snacks if he didn't eat his food.  The chicken or beef trick always worked to lure him back in.
  • Thank you :) But what exactly would u do with the chicken or beef?? @RoscosMom
  • Well I know that a lot of people give raw meat but generally I would cook it up and put it in with his food.  No salt or seasonings on it of course.  I was afraid to give him completely raw meat because of parasites or whatever (my imagination I am sure). I know that Steve has a recipe for a raw meat menu, I am waiting to hear back with the recipe to try it myself.   Real easy though just to cook it, cut it up and throw it in the bowl with dry food.  He likes the meat and will then finish off the dry food.
  • Sounds great i will definitely try that....once u get that recipe do u mind passing it on to me?? @RoscosMom
  • Sure!  Steve with @BulliesofNC is the one that has the recipe.  It was mentioned in another post and I am excited to get it too.  It really does bulk them up to add meat to their diet.  Rosco is a good looking dog and very stocky compared to others that I have seen photos of or in person down here in Florida.  I keep him on a grain free diet and add red meat and chicken so I am thinking that must make a big difference.

  • He seems adorable!! Yea im sure it help i want to start getting him on that diet...what kind of meat do u give rosco? How lean?
  • I am no expert but for us, we feed Rosco lean roasts Chicken (no bones of course), raw eggs, Veggies like Carrots, Broccoli, Spinach, Apples.  I have heard of people using ground beef or organ meats such as livers and kidneys.  I think that Steve would be best to give suggestions.  There is a thread on bulking up your bull terrier that you might find helpful here:  http://www.bulliesofnc.com/BTforum/discussion/13/bulking-up-a-bull-terrier/p1

Try adding Coconut Oil (small tablespoon per large cup of kibble) before adding all sorts of other stuff... must be the thick white extra virgin coconut oil, not the runny stuff).... if that does the trick add just one or two variations to his regular meal on occassions to keep him interested.... you don't want to turn his diet upside down... he looks great on what he is used to.... Is he getting NuVet?  We add beans, peas, diced potato, (all canned), just a tablespoon, to give variation,

Eliminate all snacks and go to feeding him once a day during the late afternoon or early evening for a week or two. If he doesn't eat all his food when it's provided to him take it away.

It sounds like he's developing a bad habit and often it's from too many snacks or table food treats. You're going to have to be consistent with his feedings and refrain from the treats in order to ensure he doesn't get finicky with his foods. Believe me, he'll eat if he's hungry and he'll eat what he's provided. You just need to get him back on track to anxiously eating the foods he should be eating.

(My daughter get's like this too during dinner time and often tries to make deals with eating something else other than what's on her plate.)

I never give any of my Bullies kibble only meals. I'm always adding something else to it whether it be raw meats, eggs, fish, veggies, home made dog stew, or even canned food. I would offer him his normal amount of food that you would give him during one feeding for a day or two until you know his appetite is back and then increase his food intake.

  • You guys are extremely helpful!! I'll be sure to keep you guys updated on how he's doing :) Thankk you all
  • I have the same problem with my 7 months Boy few weeks ago.

    Followed Steve advises
    " .......Try not to
leave his food out for him to eat at a later time. If he doesn’t eat all his
food in one sitting, take it away. It’s often best to feed once a day vice twice
a day. Allow him to build up his appetite ....."

It works! Now he eat like don't know when is his next meal.

Also, Steve's recipe helped him to gain weight.
