squatting & accidents

hey everyone so this is our second week with coach he will be 10 weeks, we have been working on his nipping and have had a lot of success!  =D> however! potty training is not going to well.. this week he got worse not better he pooped twice in the house immediately after we came inside. i take him out every time he wakes up and after he eats. when we are out side he will squat like 10 times after he pees so nothing is coming out but he still does it, is he marking ? sometimes he will pee then run up to the stairs and refuses to go back out on the grass this happened when he pooped in the house. any tips and tricks anyone can recommend. oh and after he has peed and pooped he gets a treat and lots of praise. he also pees in the house after he just comes in too  he even squatted in his crate today! :O am i doing something wrong? i have owned large breed dogs my whole life and have never had a problem with house training.

He's testing you... the rewards are good .... is he feeling grass outside? What are the punishments? I understand your feeling is perhaps "it's not his fault"... but he needs to have his nose stuck deep in the pile, a whack on the butt and crate with no love for an hour.... is he getting those?  In the house is he going on carpet? he has to associate, outside/ grass and treats... on the other hand, inside/ tile and spanks.  He will learn.... but Bullies often know what's right, and just say " **rew you anyway".

  • Its so funny that you say that they think like that because the one day it was raining and i knew he had to go and he just refused to go back out on the grass, then came inside and poop so quickly while i had my back turned for just a second then went a was hiding under the chair cause he knew he was bad. he gets spanks and a firm NO! and he tried to suck up but i just ignore him.

He needs crate and separation when he's disobedient .. the things they can't stand the most.... Can't you see in that photo you just posted.... The way he is looking up at you, there should be a balloon added with his words, " Oh! you silly human, I have you totally wrapped around my finger paw, and I will test you until the last straw"

I am doing what you said whack on the but firm No and in his crate for the next hour! i don't understand!! it was less then 5 min and he squatted at least 8 times outside and he was empty! ugh im frustrated  :( Tomorrow's a new day and i still love the little devil any other suggestions would help!!

If he is peeing in the same spot indoors that means he smells it there... you may have to discard whatever "there" is if it can't be cleaned. If he is going "everywhere" then it's going to take some time, but with persistent punishment he will learn.

A few years ago we bought a house and found their dogs has pee'd on the staircase so bad we had to rip up the carpet AND the wood, and tile it to get rid of the stink.  If they get in a bad habit it sticks, literally

It seems like we take one step forward and two steps back! Question about the squatting he will pee as soon as we get out then continue to walk around stop squat repeat ... He he marking? He will often do this even thou nothing is coming out.
Today i took him out he pooped and squared several times and came back to the door we came in and I had a couple things to do upstairs so I brought him with me he walked into my room with me looked up at me and squared this was literally 2 mins after we came inside!! After he was squatted without any pee coming out like I said I've owned plenty of dogs in my life and have never experienced this!
  • He's to young to be marking, he won't start that until he's closer to 6 months. It sounds like he has a urinary tract infection. If he has crystal build up, it gives him the sensation of having to pee, but no pee, which the behavior your describing is that to a tee. I would suggest adding some cranberry juice to his water and taking him to the vet, he will need to be out on antibotics for about 14 days. During this time, I would also suggest to be a little kinder on him about his accidents, he can't help it if it's an infection.
  • I would say instead of punishing him to his crate after he has an accident (which you're really not supposed to do anyway - crates should be a safe place) take him back outside. When Quinn would start to pee inside I would actually grab her mid-stream and we'd go outside. And when he does pee or poo outside really make a spectacle of it. I would squeal and pet and jump up and down and hug and make an idiot of myself, but she knew she did something right.

Also, he's only 10 weeks old, I'd say you've got at least 2 more weeks of consistent accidents...he'll get the hang of it don't worry.
  • Hey guys okay so we took him to the vet yesterday and no bladder infection he is still squatting over and over when he's outside and he's now peeing in his crate right at the gate. Anyone know if this is behavioural? We are stumped the vet said there was no signs of crystals either.

Did the Vet not have any concerns in regard to a bladder problem or disorder based on what you described? I would think your Vet would have concerns with the possibilities his bladder has problems functioning properly or maybe even that your puppy swallowed something he shouldn't have and although he's feeling pressure he can't pass what's blocked in his system.
I can only assume your Vet understands that your puppy is still very young and tests really aren't warranted at this time to find out if his bladder has an abnormal disorder in which he may have been born with. One thing for sure, your puppy shouldn't be constantly squatting especially if it's nonproductive meaning nothing is coming out. Is he drinking excessive amounts of water which could be a sign of kidney problems?
I'm hoping @Leslie chimes in on this discussion because I know she has a Bull Terrier that was born with a bladder problem. She can probably add a lot of good insight to things to be watchful of or things that would be cause for concern.
I'm in high hopes your puppy has a normal bladder and kidneys and is only being stubborn when it comes to potty training. He's still very young and puppies urinate fairly often at his age so what you may consider a lot may very well be normal. You may find it helpful to research canine bladder and kidney problems so you can rule learn more about early warning signs and possibly rule out these as a factor to his problem. You may also consider having him properly tested if his problem continues. Many breeders automatically have their dogs tested for many genetic disorders just to ensure their dogs are within proper health elements for breeding and developing healthy puppies. The Creatinine Test is a very popular test conducted to ensure the kidney is healthy. You may wish to consider at least having this test conducted on him.

  • Hey guys so I just wanna give a little up date! Everything is all good! The freqrent squatting stopped right after we switched his food! Stupid blue buffalo not only have him runny stools and bad gas but can be the only other think causing the frequent urination he has been back to the vet since and everything is all good!!

That's good news to hear that he's no longer having accidents and urinating too frequent. I'm not sure how the Blue Buffalo effected his urination but it's just good knowing he's doing great now.

Blows your mind how a particular food effects different dogs....
