Proper Weight?

Hello everyone!

I'd like to get some reassurance I'm not over feeding Penny; She is about 11-12months old (rescued her 2/20) When I brought her home last month she was 30lbs and was only getting fed 1x per day by the rescue.

Since bringing her home She has been getting 3cups per day of TOTW Salmon along with Nupro and Grizzly Oil .... I weighed her today and she is almost 42lbs -- Thats 12lbs in a bit over a month.

she doesn't look over weight but "stocky"

She stands 17inches at the shoulder

Hard to tell from that photo but she doesn't appear to be over weight at all and the volume of food you are currently giving her would NOT be considered excessive. Most people provide their EBT 2 cups per serving twice a day.

I know this loses something in the translation, and you have to read it with a strong Italian accent, but we have an Italian friend that always says; " She Killa you Wid da Eyes".... That's the look on her sweet face.

  • Thanks for the comments!

She truely has a wonderful temperment!

  • What a wonderfully beautiful girl you have there! And my ultimate respect for giving her a forever home out of rescue. Weight? With bullies it runs the gamut. Our Maya is 15 months and right at 50 lbs. now. She stands 17.5 inches at the withers. And I echo what phil said....the eyes....it's them eyes!
  • I agree. Sounds like you're feeding her appropriately and have put much-needed weight on her safely.

Gosh, she's gorgeous. To me, she looks like she's rolling her eyes at you and saying "Gyahhh, Mom...stop taking pictures of me!"

But don't stop! I'd love to see more of her. <3

On the subject of proper weight, Max Jr. got instructions from the Vet to loose some weight.

He used to be a steady 70-73 lbs but had a steroid treatment for a skin rash during fall 2013 and is now tipping the scales at a hefty 79 lbs.

(his ears never came up naturally and the injury prone little fella had a gold ball sized injury that required surgery during the time we should have taped his ears. We decided not to traumatize with ear taping at that time).

If the ears bother you I believe there is a procedure that can be done to make them stand up.
He's a big boy, how much exercise does he get, I see he has a huge yard?  He could lose a pound or three, but I wouldn't say he was seriously overweight.  (Unfortunately your photos appear to be distorting proportion-wise... when you upload them so I think only the last two give his real proportions? Love the second last one, he's great! good condition.

He's a Big Boy. A rare one too - Liver Tri-colored. I think he looks just fine!

  • Phil,

No, the ears do not bother me much anymore. Initially I thought that maybe we had done Max a "disservice" by not being more diligent in taping etc. Then I realized that Max probably could not care less whether his ears are floppy or erect ;-)
He is a pet and will never be shown (not could he be since he is a liver colored bullie and also neutered).
I actually think his ears suit his gentle and goofy personality....

So we will not subject Max to any surgical procedure in order to satisfy some kind of vanity that we may have regarding his ears being "proper"

Yes, his got a huge yard. We live in the country on 10 acres and Max and his Lab "sister" Penny has 1.5 acre fully fenced pasture with nice dog house where they spend there days while we are at work.

We like to think that they are spoilt dogs.

Sounds like they are soiled and HAPPY dogs and that's all that matters! I love his photos and think he looks great!

This is my son's dog... he is a Giant Schnauzer and they are meant to have cropped ears like the second photo.... His name is Gryphon.... my son didn't want to crop them... He looks very unhappy doesn't he?

  • Yes, he sure looks very unhappy ;-)

Phil, I hope my comment about the procedure for ears did not come of wrong. I knew that such procedure existed, thought about it for a few seconds then figured it was selfish to think about it.

Max has had his fair share of medical attention anyway. Head Injury (no idea what caused it, just being a bullie is my bet...), skin rashes / allergies and recently a split nail that required vet attention and 2 weeks with a bandaged paw.

He was definitely not looking very happy when he had the bandaged paw. In fact he made a big show out of it, trying to look extra miserable...hopping around on three legs... until he saw a squirrel....

Oh! no I understand completely..... Whatever makes a dog happy... and I can't see how cropping off 3/4 of the Schnauzer's ear that God gave it could make it happy, (although, once done they sure are more manageable than the big floppy ones).... I'm glad Max is over his medical needs... squirrels will almost bring them back them back from the dead!
