Punishment

I just had one of my bullies destroy a corner of the couch. They have not done any major damage in the last 18 months. They do the occasional kids toy or a towel or some plant but never like this. What is an efficient way of punishment. I think hitting them is not the way to go but I need to make sure they understand I am not happy with the damage they caused.
Any suggestions?

  • Boyda's advice sounds like the best way to handle it.  So sorry to hear that happened.  Wonder why the dog did that because it sounds like they've never destroyed anything like that before, nothing out of the ordinary.
  • I was not home when it happened. I knew right away some was done as the boy had the guiltiest look and put his head down. Hopefully it will not happen again.

Yes, split second timing.... So 10 seconds or 10 hours later, you are wasting your time and confusing the heck out of them...probably best that you ignore it completely, and almost "encourage " them to do it again so you can be hiding in the wings and catch them at split second notice so it counts... The couch is screwed anyhow right?
Then I'd look at whatever the real reason is that they have found to be destructive.... We never leave our kids alone at home without being in their crate, but they are never bored enough to do anything destructive if they are "around the house" other than lift a sheet of paper from the trash can or take a sneaker off to their crates to threaten..... But, we know, if they are not sleeping, and quiet.... Something's afoot.
