Help needed with Sids temperament

My 9 month old has stared to bark alot more & last week he snarled at me which has made me a bit worried that he is going to be a nasty dog. It happened when I put his food down for him then went to the table to pick up my plate of food & as I was about to leave the kitchen he started snarling at me as if he wanted to have my food instead. My husband came to my rescue & dragged him away & put him in his crate. This has not happened since but has made me query how we discipline him. Some people are saying we should have him neutered as he humps alot as well.

Could some let me know how to discipline Sid?   & should we get him neutered?

This seems to be a very popular question/concern that we often hear about from owners with a EBT in adolescent stages. It's not uncommon for EBT's to test their dominance with their owners with signs of aggression. It's something newly learned as they mature and really don't know how to use their dominance correctly.

You do need to nip this in butt and teach him that his antics are unacceptable and there are affective ways of doing so.

Instead of regurgitating the same information I highly encourage you to read some of the other posts on subjects that clone yours. Look to the right and view through the following categories:

    • Bull Terrier Training and Obedience

  • Steve is correct. Young bullies are head strong and test your limits. Neutering? Most on here know my feeling on that subject. Neutering such a young bullie is cruel and medieval in my opinion. The hormones produced during this stage in their development are very important. Just imagine a young teenage boy, castrated in his adolescence...and what effect it would have on his development. I could go on and on about this...suffice to say I view such practice as nothing more than a money making scheme for vets at the expense of a very important developmental stage in a young pup's life.

I agree with Xtracho ... Neutering & Spaying only when completely unavoidable, which includes obviously for the Bullies' health. If male dogs didn't try humping stuff they wouldn't be male dogs. If you have no intention of breeding him, then teach him NO like everything else. I would like to breed my boy so when he "humps" other dogs at the dog park I let other owners that don't understand get peeved off. But I do admonish him if he makes a pig of himself and behaves like Bill Clinton.

  • Thank you for your speedy response I will read up on all of the categories. Most of the time Sid is well behaved, he can be a bit of a pain but he is still a puppy :-) I think the problem is with us mostly because we have only ever had cats so to have an EBT is a very big change although we did read up on the breed.
  • Reading up on the breed is great...but practical experience is priceless! Just give in and admit that you are now owned by a bullie! No one here will think less of you for it! After all, we are all property of our beloved bullies! Now...it's time for you to pony up some pics of the famous Sid so we can all be awestruck! (and Phil can open up his mustard jar!)

If you are accustomed to cats you can look forward to a totally elevated and rewarding experience with Bullies... They take much more work but that's why the reward is greater.. LOADS of patience needed the first year and a half.
