When You're at Work...

edited November 2013 in General

Just wondering what other people do with their bullie when they go to work? We're faced with a dilemma, my wife has to go away for two months for work and she's usually home all day with Thor. We can either keep him in a fully fenced, escape proof back yard, or with his crate (left open) in the kitchen  which has baby gates to prevent him running free through the house.I'm at a loss as to what to do because i'm frightened someone might steal him from the back yard whilst i'm not home. But at the same time, is it cruel to leave him inside all day?

Thanks,

Matt

Wow, that's a tough one. He's too young to be left 8 hours alone. After ( I'm assuming ) 8 hours of your sleeping time. I definately would NOT leave him outside unattended for more than 30 minutes if you ARE home. Our kids play on the "fenced" patio for maybe an hour a day... Either with human or nanny cam supervision.
I hope you have a friend/ neibhour/or service that can walk him at lunchtime'ish. and evening

  • That's the best idea what Phil said. Leave him inside and have a friend/neighbor take him out. Do you have anyone trust worthy to give a key too? Maybe a neighbor who takes walks during the day anyway. Teenagers always work well too, if they get out of school early enough. Give that kid $20 a week to take your pup out for 10
-15 minutes a day and they'll be in heaven!

Just make sure the "kid" can handle your treasure as effectively as he'll handle the $20!

  • I'm lucky to have a husband who works from home, so my dogs are never left alone for extended hours while I work. I wouldn't leave him in the backyard, even though you might think it's escape proof, I wouldn't want to chance him testing your escape proof backyard. Maybe build a kennel for him, that is a lot better then leaving him in your kitchen for hours. We learned the lesson the hard way when we went out on day and came back with the corners of our cabinets chewed off.
  • We used to let our BT in the backyard to play regularly.  We were always home, we just wanted to let her run around and be outside on pretty days to be in the sun, etc.  That was great for a couple of years and we thought everything was fine since we thought our backyard was escape-proof.

One day, she dug under the fence, and it was a deep hole she had to dig and it didn't take her very long.  She had never even attempted to venture outside of the fence for years.  I went to the deck to get her and she was gone.  Luckily, we rode around and there were some construction guys that recognized her because she was an unusual breed to see running around like a free dog out to discover the world.

The guys pointed us in the right direction and we luckily saw a woman on her front porch swing with Augusta, just playing and having a good time.  The lady was really nice and was waiting for someone to come looking for her.  That was before the microchip days.

Long story short, unless it's a concrete chain wall, I will never underestimate a Bull Terrier's ability to escape.  They are strong and smart.  If I had been away at work when she escaped, there's no way we would have found her hours later.

We tried letting her back out after piling up rows of stacked cinder blocks to block the hole and she still managed to escape again.  Once she found her escape route, she kept going there and I couldn't leave her unsupervised again.

I would hate for something similar to happen while you're at work.  The doggy day cares can be really expensive, but I'd be tempted to use that if I didn't have a neighbor that would be willing to walk your dog a couple of times a day.  Honestly, if a neighbor asked me, I'd do it for free, so maybe there's someone out there that isn't working or retired that would like to have some companionship for a little while during the day that would be willing to help you out.

@Boyda... Do you know of any EBT owners that DON'T have their kitchen cabinet corners chewed off?
@Exiled.... Good story, thankful ending,.. thanks for sharing, let's hope every treasure owner reads it!!!

  • We are lucky too as I dont work much and when I do Stoeger tags along. He is a great pup but I could never trust he free roaming and alone. I freak out when we leave him in his kennel for date night.

Date night? What the heck's that? B-)

What with two Bullie pups, needing to do three times the amount of work to make 70% of the money..... My date nights have got cobwebs! I hung them outside for Halloween

  • We still have cabinet corners but even with 24/7 supervision I'm not sure how much longer that will last, haha!

Our decision to get a Bullie was solely dependent on the fact that Stoges_mom was available all the time.

He goes everywhere with us. As a matter of fact we will be going to the Giants v Cowboys game Sunday and he's tagging along ;)

If Stoges_mom had to return to work and Stoeger had to be left alone for 8-10 hours... I don't know what we'd do.

A kennel wouldn't work too well here in the winter unless I could set it up with access to a heated building and a doggy-door...

Neighbors in NY aren't friendly/helpful neighbors like the rest of the world has, ha!

A paid dog walker might be a good option.

Of course, I could always just take Stoeger to work with me. He loves the car lot.

    Gee, that's the first time that I've heard that people from New York State aren't the friendliest on earth, ( nudge-nudge, wink-wink). Go Cowboys! { that's 'cause my son-in-law is a Giants fan }

  • We had a good friend of ours volunteer to watch Stoeger tomorrow! I was nervous about the three hour drive there and then staying in the stoge mobile. Yay!! So we do have a date night! Stoeger will be going to stay the day with a friend, along with treats, toys and instructions! Lol
  • Have fun you 2 and no talking about the baby!!! ( that's what the experts say anyway )??? ;)

  • Thanks for your input everyone. We've decided to keep him inside and get someone to check on him where possible.

    Thanks again.
  • That's great CrozinOz, probably your best bet.
