When were you hooked?

edited October 2013 in General
I remember the first time I had ever laid eyes on an English Bull Terrier. I had always seen pictures of them, but the first time I physically saw one I was hooked. He was a little brindle boy, but by god he was gorgeous. I was hooked. I had to bring one into my life as soon as possible (which wasn't until a few years after I was first graced with his presence). I was just curious to know how everyone else was hooked? Do you remember that moment? I think about it every now and then, how this breed, in a sense, discovered me and how I will never own another. I have been raised around Boxers, Rottweilers and of course the regular ol' pit bull, but none compare to my love for this breed. Don't get me wrong, I loved my previous dogs (and I love my current 9 year old pug to death!) but as an overall breed, this one by far takes the cake. JB and Cookie have been an awesome blessing in my life, no matter how many times they chew up a brand new dog bed or steal a steak from the counter, I love them to death and wouldn't have it any other way.

  • My love of Bull Terriers started with the movie Toy Story, if you can beilive that! I had a toy of "Scuds" the neighbor boys dog when the movie came out. i was 7, and at that time i didn't know they had a "name" for the breed, but  i was also on a hunt to collect a bull terrier toy from "topps" i wanted that one more then anything and it took me about a year before i was able to get him!

after that my sister started subscribing to dog fancy in 98 when i was  10 and she got one featureing "Bull Terriers"

and it was right then i was "hooked" i elarned the breed name and i wanted one, everyday i would say to my mom  "If i had a million dollars-i would buy a Bull Terrier"

when i was able to have internet acess i began joining forums and groups and talking and learning and researching-but i never DID see one until i was about 19 and just a few houses away from my BF Cesars Breeders moved in with about 10 Bull Terriers, my BF picked me up after work one morning to drive to his house and says to me

"Now, im going to tell you something-but don't scream in my ear okay?"

me "yeah right when do I scream?"

"Okay, the new neighbors who are moving in have like 5 of those dogs you like"

    me "........AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!"

"I SAID DONT SCREAM IN MY EAR!"

The rest was history. Ive never batted an eye at any other breed since before i owner one i USED to have a "second choice" in dogs-now i don't, i don't even consider having any other breed, i don't see videos or photos and think "awww, someday ide like to have one of those"

that thought has never crossed my mind since Getting Bull Terriers, i think more in terms of

"some day, ide like to have a white bully, and a solid tri bully, and a red and white bully...."

  • I was around 7 or 8 when I first saw a Bully in film The Incredible Journey and it was love at first sight!  Then a few years later and there was Bill Sykes and Bullseye in the movie of Oliver and from then on, for me, there was no other dog other than a Bull Terrier. I got my first one in 1977, a rescue called Betty, to the absolute horror of my family who were used to Labradors and Retrievers and made no bones of labelling her ugly from day 1!  She died in 1987.  In 1988  I got,  as a Christmas present , Lily, the only time that I have experienced a baby Bully.  She was a very special dog who was loved by everyone due to her nature and even appeared on stage in a musical version of Oliver, stealing  the headlines in the local paper much to the disgust of the rest of the cast!. She passed in 2000 and then along came Sharky, a 4 year old rescue who had been accustomed to spending 90% of his time locked in a shed in darkness on his own.  He was a LOT of work and had a lot of problems with his skin and teeth, plus behavioural issues, but who in the end showed his true nature as a lovely natured lad.  And then finally our beloved Bikkel, rescue number 3, who died earlier this year. So, as you can see, I have been a Bully junkie for most of my life!!  I know that we Bully fans think that we are blessed with owning God’s gift to canines, but I have a very good friend who is exactly the same in his love for Corgis (let’s not go there!!!)

  • SPUDS MCKENZIE!!! I was about 7 as well. I was 32 when I got my first. I do still love all walks of dogs but my Bullie breeds steel my heart. My brother got a bulldog named George I was in love, I had a pit mix that was my best friend, and I was actually raised around greyhounds. But my mom had her mutts then her rotties and her pits. Loved yhem all. But I will always own a Bt now that I know their real ( had never actually seen one in person )!!!! Lets face it we would be Bored by other breeds now!!!!!!
Your actions speak so loudly I cannot hear your words.

It's been so long I frankly can't remember. When you get to be an old fart you only know that you can't live without them.... Well you can, but what's the point? I have a hard enough time remembering when I got hooked on my wife! :-*
In the beginning God created English Bull Terriers, in the image of EBT's, God created all other breeds.
  • I hae I say I've always admires the bred as soon as I saw the first image of one! That dang nose! In Georgia my neighbors female got loose and came into my yard twice, I told the owner if it happens again I was going to keep her! Lol I've only recently been lucky enough to own one. And since having Stoeger I only have bull terrier eyes! All other dogs look weird! Lol
  • I don't remember how old I was when my love started but I know I was very young I'm 21 now tho my love for bull terriers first started when when I saw this movie callled Babe:pig in the city in this movie they had a white BT with a black spot on his eye and when I saw the beauiful dog from then on out I knew I would one day own one which my dream came true with my first one Spuds when I was 16 but sad to say he got hit by a truck at 13months old I buried him that day and never forgot him and 5 years later I'm 21 which is present time I find me a puppy BT from breeder hour north of me which bear's the same marking as Spuds did which almost made me name this one Spuds like my old BT but I decided I would call him Kaiser instead and now my dream journey is starting all over again after 5 years of missing my old bud Spuds well that's my story on how I fell in love with the breed I hope y'all liked it ;)

I was about 11 years old when my family went to the local humane society and we were fortunate enough to stumble upon an EBT. We adopted him (Spud) and he made a huge difference in my families life. He shared our home for over ten years. He wasn't the perfect example of the breed standard but he had the heart of a purebred Bullie. Finally, another time has come in my life where the time can be devoted to another Bullie. I hope my little Stoeger will be able to share as much if not more time with us.

Back in the 60's while watching Cary Grant's movie, None But the Lonely Heart .  That's the first time I've ever seen an EBT.  Then when the movie Patton came out, I was hooked and determined to own (rather be owned) one >:D<
