Steve: Do you have the tapatalk plugin enabled for this forum? The mobile version of this forum doesn't show photos people post and just acts a little loopy once in a while. Tapatalk would make for quicker and easier use for people who use this forum on mobile. Figured I'd ask.

  • I check the forum with my iPhone so the mobile site pops up, but at the bottom of the page there's a button for full site and then you can access photos and everything!

Just to be ornery! With Bullies, who the hell has time to be mobile???? Just kidding... comes up fine on iPad and iPhone... but on my work phone (Samsung Android) it is a bit limited.

This Forum was actually more or less just an attempt by myself to put together Forum that didn't cost $200 a month. I downloaded a trial version through my webhost and actually was able to change the formats, download apps from Vanilla Forums, and get the forum to function exactly like their $200 a month platform. A couple months ago I ran into a problem and called the company to ask for assistance. They were shocked that I had the forum up and live the way I had converted it and attached it to my domain name. They were also quick to let me know they would assist me since I wasn't a paying customer. Since our phone conversation I also noticed they now require a login and password in order to download their apps. The login name is the one they provide their customers and is no longer accessible to the public.
I'll be honest with you, I'm not very happy with the quality of this Forum and the limitations. It was kind of an experiment and within a short period of time many people found the Forum and started using it. Now there are over 2000 members. Mostly from people who prefer to read than write. I get a lot of emails from people saying something about a topic on the Forum but they have never posted one sentence. You'd be surprised how many views certain threads receive.
I've been debating on going with another type of Forum which is Free but works under their domain name thus gaining the popularity, hits, and SEO under their name.  My concern is that it would most likely cause us all to start all over losing all the information that is depicted on the Forum right now.
I think I'll call them today and see if data can be transferred to their Forum platform.
Another thing that bothers me about this Forum is that it attracts many Spammers even with a Capcha method of registering. Lately I'm having to delete a lot of bogus users and spam threads created by them.

What's your opinion about starting fresh with a new Forum?

  • I can help Steve. I think if we archive the important post that would be great but the amount of data from the images would be a tough transfer.

I've seen the spam as well. It isn't significant and it normally hits during non-peak US hours, which can be prevented. Let me know what you decide to do since I have the time to help.
  • My philosophy with forums is as long as it gets the job done it's fine with me. I was just curious if you had the tapatalk plugin enabled. If you did I would probably get it again and use it. It strips it down to more barebones and makes it quicker and easier to go through when using a phone. The regular mobile site is fine though. I understand the costs of some forums and its absurd.
The forum does seem like it has been a lot more active over the last couple of months. Nothing out of control though since a lot are browsers like you mentioned. You don't have an option to approve new accounts on top of the captcha? To deter the early morning spam.

I do have an option to approve the applicants and receive them via email. However, right now the Forum is gaining about 20 users a day and even when I receive them there's no true way of distinguishing them as a spammer. I may try that again and see how it goes.
I could always assign more moderators. If anyone has an interest let me know.

I delete about 6 or 7 spammers per day.... If I'm in the office they are gone in 10 minutes, If I'm on the road Steve usually smokes them before I get back.
