Just curious if any of you treat for flea even if they don't have fleas & any certain type of flea treatment recommended? Also how often should do you give your BT a bath & certain brand of shampoo?
We use k-9 Advantix and I love it. We used it with our shepherd's and now with Apollo. I You don't live in a high tick area ask your vet about Trifexis. It's a pill over topical treatments. As for baths we have "spa day" once a week. Bath, ear clean and nail clipping. Right now I am just using Johnson and Johnson baby bath. I'm not sure what I'll use when he's older.
We have had many puppies/dogs over the years. My family has always used baby shampoo. If I want to make our dogs smell really great, I use Fresh and clean shampoo which I buy on the internet but it is available at pet stores. We use prescription topical flea and tick treatments and don't have a preference.
I have Spud on a Heartgard Plus and Advantix II combo. Works great. Ask your vet, Spud's actually recommended that or trifexis which does both in one tablet.
I believe you have to get it from a vet because of the heartworm preventive. I order my Advantix on line, but I have to have a prescription for the heartguard.
To answer your question about treating for fleas even if the dog has none? YES! The old Saw "Prevention is worth a pound of cure" is my motto! Perhaps it depends on where you live and your environment? Whether for instance, your furkid is around any other dogs/cats etc? And consider before you answer this: How many wild critters, feral cats etc pass through your yard each night?
While I have never seen fleas here on my property, I have seen deer with ticks and "All the usual suspects" live here in my area as I am on a river and surrounded by forest.
Keep in mind also that depending again on what area you live in, fleas in many areas have built up resistance to some products. So, a person may have to change from time to time.
So, my furkids are on a flea/tick preventitive. Are we lucky or what to have so many products to chose from! Sonja & Pumba in OR
