Rescue Organizations: Dont hate breeders that are benefitting the breed!!!

I thought I’d share this story…

Yesterday my son took it upon himself to put together some photos of our bull terriers and create a nice slide show. He was so proud of himself and the video itself turned out nice. I placed the video on our facebook page along with a few facebook bull terrier groups that I’m listed on. The intent was to share some photos of our bull terriers with other enthusiasts that share the same love for the breed as we do. It was nice to receive so many “likes” and uplifting comments from so many people who enjoyed the photos. However, there was one group, “Bully Lovers”, where one of the members immediately posted a comment slandering me as a breeder with claims that she was sick of cleaning up my mess with rescues. I knew right away I was dealing with a rescue worker which had a hatred towards breeders regardless who they were or the reputation they had. Her name is Laura Denyer and she’s a member of a Bull Terrier organization in South Carolina. Naturally I replied in defense, like someone protecting their kids, and told her she was liar and making false accusations without merit. She replied back saying I sold a puppy to someone in South Carolina that had intentions of breeding and running a puppy mill. Again, I immediately knew she was making up stories since I sell all puppies with limited registration which prevents such incidences. I additionally told her that we contract all our puppies which dictates that any puppy that needs to be rendered will come back to us. She came back saying that I do not have any sort of sales contract for my puppies. This lady truly got under my skin and I couldn’t help but put her in her place by telling her to provide legitimate proof by providing any such evidence proving her accusations. I really wanted others to know she lacked integrity and was a bonafide liar. It was at this time she declined on further replies (imagine that).

I reread the post and couldn’t believe the aspect of posting some beautiful pictures of bull terriers would lead into such hatred from someone that was supposed to have been in a position of respect for the rescue efforts of bull terriers. Had she have any sort of knowledge on the breed she would have known who we were and our love for the breed. Instead she made a decision to boldly lie and make up stories about us in attempts to bash a breeder she automatically assumed was breeding inappropriately. You’d think this would be just a rare act of ignorance from someone with little intelligence. However, this morning another group member chimed in by saying “yeah, this breeder isn’t even a member of BTCA…” and went on to slander again with no knowledge whatsoever with who we were. It literally amazes me that some of these “new” bull terrier enthusiasts try so hard to make themselves look intelligent or overly caring about the breed by chastising breeders in which they know nothing about.

Many years ago it was Elaine Bernard (God rest her sole), from Ann-Dee’s, who told me she may be a member of BTCA for many years but keeps her distance from them and no longer agrees with some of the recent breeding amongst a few members. She was so right and wanted nothing to do with the derogatory politics of some of the members who only wished to rake havoc. To be quite honest, it was always the loud mouth members of this club that lacked professionalism and compassion that always prevented me from wanting to be a part of their “Club” or should I say cult. I’m not saying they’re all like that and I’m confident that most aren’t but for the ones that have nothing to do but troll through forums and facebook posts for the breeders outside their club to bash without any merit it truly casts a negative imagine on the club group as a whole. I’d be more than welcome to be a part of a close knit group of individuals that share the love and interest in the bull terrier breed that I do but I can’t bare to condone the thought of dealing with some of the idiots and phony’s that pretend as though they’re a subject matter expert on bull terriers because they paid a due and became a member of a “club.” I was saddened to hear last month about how much health and aggression problems Leslie had with two of her Bull Terriers she purchased from a BTCA breeder. This could have been an excellent example to bash another breeder from a “Club” that loves to rant and rave about how professional they are but you’ll never see me stoop to that level.

You know the sad part about this entire incident with this post was the fact that it initiated from a member of a rescue agency in South Carolina that had no clue that I am actually the only bull terrier rescue organization in the state of North Carolina. Although I rescue many bull terriers in need of finding loving and forever homes I’ve never felt the need to chastise the breeders of these bull terriers (some of which came from BTCA breeders) but concentrate my efforts on the positive nature of getting the dogs to proper homes. Last week we found a great home for “Budha” who was a great bull terrier that just needed a home with no other dogs. I’m not the one to pad myself on the back for providing rescue and adoption through my website and efforts because I devote thoroughly to the breed and wish all other breeders would do the same. Maybe if they did their state would show “0” availability of bull terriers in need of rescue like the state of North Carolina.

Anyway, the administrator of this particular facebook group recognized the unwarranted slander and deleted the post and I don't blame her. I'm confident she too can see that there's some nasty people out there that would rather stir up trouble with false accusations in hopes of making a name for themselves vice conducting proper research and making friends with others who have loved the breed for far longer than they've had the capability to say the words "bull terrier."

I guess I’ve created this thread to vent a little but over the last 12 months it’s become apparent that there’s some really nasty people involved within the Bull Terrier rescues agencies as well as some of the clubs that are supposed to be reputable. What happened to the shared love with the Bull Terrier breed?

I too, am totally against the puppy mills and backyard breeders that could care less about focusing their attention to complimenting the breed standards but damn it’s as if some of the idiots to be keeping your distance from are amongst the groups that claim to have the most interest in the breed. I’m blessed to have met so many wonderful people over the years who truly love bull terriers and care deeply about the welfare of the breed regardless if they devote to showing or not. Wake up people and simply love the breed and support all those who are going out of their way to keep the breed standards proper, healthy, and respectful.

Thanks Mary. From time to time we seem to encounter some of the rather ignorant people within rescue organizations who despise breeders as well as a few club members who can't bear to recognize any breeder outside of their club. My problem is that I can't simply ignore unwarranted slander without putting them in their place with facts that they can't deny. Sometimes retaliating against these wacko's is something that's necessary. Then again maybe 21 years in the Marine Corps instilled it in me to always stand up for something I love and hold dear to the heart. :)>-
