Maya still getting carsick

edited July 2013 in General
Well, those of you that remember: when my girls got Maya at the airport she got carsick on the way home. And it seems that she gets that pretty easily. I hate that she's not comfortable in the car. My daughter just sent me a text and told me that she's thrown up twice and is drooling "like crazy". This is real time. I'm in communication with them as they are on the road. I told Lizzie to either feed her only about half her afternoon meal or not at all. But it did not help.

If anyone has any advice I sure would like to hear it. I know Maya is miserable like that.

  • Lizzie just texted me and said she seems calm and has fallen asleep. So maybe the worst is over. But I would still like to hear from you all if you have any advice.

She must be getting very nervous when traveling in the car. Some dogs just don't like being in the car. It isn't so much the motion as it is them seeing things whipping by so fast. I would try putting her in a kennel with a blanket over the kennel. Give her a piece of bread before the trip which helps her stomach. Take her out on short trips from time to time getting her more and more used to being in the car and perhaps she'll begin to realize it isn't so bad and her nerves will relax a bit more.

  • Having familiar toys and something to chew on sometimes helps keep their mind occupied. Benadryl is a good temporary fix that a lot of people like to use. Would probably help to chip away on those long drives without having to make as many pit stops. I'm sure you guys already are. But be a little more conscious of fast acceleration and taking corners/turns hard and fast. Sometimes that throws them off.
  • One of our Bullies "Snowflake" would get sick as soon as she got in the car.  Her nerves would be rattled.  We tried just about everthing to stop this.  Medication etc.  As soon as we put her in a kennel with some wind blowing in she was fine.  With stops and stretching she would love to travel.

  • Thanks all! And keep the advice coming. The girls made it to NOLA OK. Don't know if the episode of throwing up continued or not. Have to wait for an update from Lizzie.
  • Just got a text from Lizzie. They made it to NOLA without any more incidents of vomiting. So that's good. Maybe she just has to get used to it. I just can't stand the thought of her being uncomfortable like that.
  • Well the girls are on their way back home from NOLA. And yep, Maya got carsick twice again and the drooling continues. Lizzie told me that she opened a window to give her some fresh air and she got frightened at how loud and fast the wind was. Hmmmm....this is a brainstorming problem here. And I feel so bad for Maya.  :(

Did you try keeping her in a kennel with a blanket over it?

They did not have the kennel with them on this trip. That's our next attempt to solve this problem. I read on another board that homemade ginger treats are a possibility. If ginger works with us I wonder if it would help with dogs as well? Anything is worth a try for sure. That board also mentioned giving her a sweet treat before the trip. So at least we have some possible remedies to try.
