Puppy Mouthing

I would like some pointers on how to curb puppy mouthing other than constantly sticking chewy toys in Daisy's mouth or telling her, "No, leave it." as I do these 2 things.   She seems to prefer to chew cloth things, hair, and fingers.  Boy is she strong!
Suggestions VERY welcome.

  • I'd like to add that I'm uncomfortable buying her soft toys, because in the past, Snoopy has quickly chewed and tried to gulp pieces of cloth and string.  I don't know how many times I've dug those things out of his mouth trying to get to it before he swallowed it.

    Mary,

You need to be stern with her and let her know the biting is not excepted. I understand she's going to want to chew on things right now because she's teething and feels the need to chew on everything but if she thinks it's ok to bite on you or your cloths tell her "NO" sharply and pinch her lip or nose. Bullie Puppies can be hard headed and if they think the consequences to negative behavior were mild or meak they will soon discover that continued negative behavior is well worth those type of consequences. She'll learn, Daisy is smart as a whip.

I don't blame you for keeping her away from the soft toys. you're correct she will chew them up and swallow them.

The chew toys that seem to work the best are made by "Kong." I happen to have good luck with providing puppies with a small cone made by Kong in which you can put the Kong treats inside. this seems to keep them focused on getting to the food and not wishing to find an alternate object to chew up.

  • Thank you, Steve.  I will use the kongs and stuffing!  I haven't pinched her lip, but I have tapped her nose with my finger.  Now that you mention the lip thing, I remember a vet of ours once said that he pinches their lip when they try to chew flesh.  :) his wording.
  • Peanut butter inserted with a butter knife works too, I don't allow a lot of people food but in a pinch I have done it and it kept my boy busy for an hour:)
Your actions speak so loudly I cannot hear your words.
  • Yep, ran out of Kong stuffing and used the peanut butter:)  Yum!

  • When my girl was a pup and she used to nip my clothing and hands I would make a high pitched Ouch sound and turn away from her and ignore her and it ended it fairly quickly as she was an attention hog and hated being ignored, hope this might work for you:/

  • Leslie, you're right:) Being ignored is a very bad thing:) It seems to work for other things too.
  • So glad I could help:) now if I could just figure out my male:/

  • Daisy, you may also try an air horn to get her attention, you can get them at any dollar store and they hate the sound. This even gets Brutus to stop dead in his tracks and gets me his full attention immediately, loud though:/

  • Thanks, Leslie.   I do have a bike horn that I use to use on my Kerry Blue.  I haven't used it on my Bullies yet.
  • It works well for mine, glad I could help:)

  •  i learned the hard way to NEVER use bitter tasting lotions or cremes as they are poisiones and can do some serious damage. i got a bottle of bitter orange reccomended by my vet for my bt puppy nipping put it on he licked it off then chewed on me put more on he licked it off then chewed on, next morning he had watery stools so bad i thought he was going to die he was so dehydrated and ill he couldnt stop going all over. took him the whole day to feel better. i checked the label to learn its toxic is ingested so i tossed it out and figured out to use pepermint extract mixed with water till its harsh but not burning in your mouth (you should taste it first) it should be a harsh flavor but not burn only a few drops in water will do dogs HATE IT never met a dog who would willingly lick it and will droll excessivly to get it off there tongues! spray it on anything they learn to associate the smell with the taste and wont go near anything peperminty. AND the best part is they could drink the whole bottle and have no ill effects. so if you do feel the need to resort to dousing your hands in somthing try that first it nearly always works if it doesnt try to make it a little stronger till it does work. and DONT use tabasco sauce! its too easy to accedentally get into puppies eyes and cause serious eye irritation!
