When to say NO

Hello

A niggling that's been on my mind for awhile now. I probably know but reaching out for your advice Steve. This is a general question in regards to all breeds of dogs.

Now I have a very friendly Memphis, unlike Moose who was more protective with his energy towards anyone.

I really dislike the fact that most people he greets warmly and is easily coerced with a stick etc. Whilst I have the comfort of him not being aggressive and is safe with them...he isnt my guard dog. Yes he'll bark etc but that 'protection' ...'hes my dog, under my control' is an uneasy feeling. I am at fault for allowing this friendly interaction and it is hard to tell dog lovers, back off🥴

Yes it is a training thing in which people have to respect and that I have to bring my 'balls to the table' and assert my ownership and hierarchy so to speak. Extremely hard when having a social catchup but the dog lovers may be offended.

How do you go about it Steve? Or anyone else🤔

Have you considered purchasing one of the dog vests that offer various patches that velcro to the vest?
    "Dog in Training"
    "Please don't Pet"
    Etc

These are perfect for using when in public when you really don't want strangers coming up to your dog and petting him. In the event someone tries to pet him the best thing you can say is, "Sorry, he's in training and I'm trying not to get him used to getting interrupted attention from strangers otherwise he'll be focused on that with every person he walks past."

Its more in my home environment Steve. Where I and memphis are secure. Not knowing how much I should allow interaction with people that visit. Yes I ultimately have to judge the people but having him respond so positively with his stick is the 'control' he misunderstands. If I'm firm with being the boss...he will listen but I then become the not so nice woman. Just a tricky position when you get dog lovers.

Btw he is great with protecting my block, chasing off intruders. I now have chickens and he is such a good boy💙

It can be difficult unless they know the breed. I guess the only around it would be choose which guests are going to be comfortable with how you discipline your dog. If you think they'll cast poor judgement then it might be best just to keep your Memphis in his kennel crate while your guest is visiting. You can always say, I really don't want him jumping all over you in hopes of getting attention because he can be a handful and doesn't listen well to my instructions when he's overly excited around new people.
