Severe Atopic Dermatitis

Hey guys,
I appreciate your time in advance. I am the very happy owner of a beautiful brindle boy named Beans. He is 5 years old and for the last 4 years of his life we have been struggling with the chronic skin condition atopic dermatitis. He was on apoquel for 3 years and we have just started the cytopoint monthly injection which he pretty much needs to the day, before he starts having an attack. To put it in perspective we have in the last 6 months been to the vet 12-14 times. He is CONSTANTLY getting secondary infections. They are the worst on his back legs where his callouses are and it’s got to the point where he has sinus tracts. I manage as best I can at home with medicated baths, neocort cream, bandages, etc but I am at my wits end. I have swapped and changed his diet, (he is now on raw). I’m just wondering if anyone has experienced similar ? I’m starting to worry about his quality of life, they have given us steroid tablets to help with severe attacks but only for maximum 3 days at a time. They help immensely but I understand they have their own side effects. I am about to book in with a dermatology specialist. What have you guys had success with? Have any of you seen a dermatologist and had beneficial outcomes? My heart breaks for my baby and I just don’t know what else to do! Thank you sooo much.

All the medications will only compromise his immune system even more than it already is. I realize you're going off the advice your Vet is providing you but if you research some of these meds you'll find many only provide short term results and can cause harm to the dog's natural immune system.

Try this supplement and I'm sure you'll see positive results in a short period of time without the need for prescription drugs.

    Hello from Melbourne
    Just wandering where you are?
Relating to environment conditions Beans encounters :)
  • Hi @jur45 we live in Newcastle NSW!

    Hello again,
How does the heat affect Beans? My boys struggle but get to enjoy the beach early morning for their exercise n play at least.
Sorry to hear Beans has struggled so long with skin issues. I have my fair share but am not dependent on medication at least. It’s unfortunate we cannot get the nuvet supplements here. It would really help our boys I believe. I get supps from iloveadog in Byron Bay. Check out this site. Donna is extremely helpful. You may send her an email to discuss Beans concerns and see what she may recommend for you. Tell her I recommend her. She’s been more helpful than any vet regarding skin, immune issues. I’m still dealing with issues but it doesn’t hinder their ability to be able to run, play and are alot more energetic. Hope this can help :)
  • Hey there, get your dog tested for environmental allergies and start immune therapy injections there are no other ways to make him better. I dealt with that and happy i done the treatment. Good luck

Hi I am writing in hopes that we can maybe get some help with our almost 5 month old EBT Cheeka. She has broke out with like a hot red rash in certain spots(will attach photos) that then turn to hard scabs. We have changed her diet and have her on supplements and have seen some slow changes for the better but this has been a long struggle so far and wondered if you may have any advice or help. Thank you in advance.

@NettNett - I'm going to revert back to my statement above in regard to providing a good supplement that will boost your Bullie's immune system. A weak immune system will cause many skin issues and allergies. Please try the NuVet. You won't be disappointed. https://bulliesofnc.com/online-store/supplements-vitamins/

@jur45 here I posted pictures of Cheeka and yes we are trying many home remedies and truthfully is what has helped get us to this point...lots of good stuff out there...she is getting better daily and we are trying the NuVet supplement to see how she goes. Thank you for your help.

@BulliesofNC thank you we have ordered some and have been giving it to her for a lil under a week now. Do you know how long before we see a difference?
  • jur45jur45 australia
Cheekas photos are hard to look at, she is suffering terribly :( but I hope she's better very soon!!!

@NettNett - You'll start noticing a difference within 2 weeks. Just make sure you're providing her ample daily exercise too.

Okay thank you. She gets walked twice a day for 25-30 and we do training 2-3 times a day for 5 ro 15 minutes depending on how fast she picks it up and goes through it. And we have a back yard that's a decent size for her to run around in and because she itches so bad we always go out with her so she gets play time then as well. She has lots of toys but hasn't really wanted them lately. So here's hoping this NuVet works.

Hi @BulliesofNC and @jur45 Cheeka is doing well. She looks a lot better now, although she is on Vanectyl P as well as the NuVet. We are weaning her off the Vanectyl P as we felt forced into that medication and hoping the NuVet is the key to the way she looks and will help continue the progress of her getting better and on the right track as we have no trust or faith in Veterinarians at least the ones we have around here so rude, mean and do not seem to care about what we would like to try for Cheeka. I wish we had a Homeopathic Veterinarian close to take her to them instead so I am learning whatever I can for her and hope she will continue to get better. If I can I will post a picture but it doesn't seem to want to let me. Anyways take care.

Hi I wanted to update about my dog Cheeka that I asked a while back about skin issues. She passed away at the beginning of November she apparently had kidney failure and is why we struggled to heal her. And why she was hard to diagnose. A handful of vets in the beginning never ran bloods on her and were so arrogant and just wanted her on meds for the rest of her life. We finally found a Homeopathic vet that we liked and we thought and him also that bloods were taken and analyzed and is why we had her on thyroid meds but in the end he apologized because he had only looked to see if she had a thyroid problem. My heart is broken as she was my world, she went everywhere with me and I still cry from time to time. But I do have to admit she is no longer suffering, bless her. Anyways I just wanted to let you know.

@NettNett I'm so sorry for the loss of Cheeka and I know no words will fill the void. She was a beautiful BT

I'm very sorry to hear that. It shocks me a blood panel was never done. Normally though, a dog with kidney disease is often noted by the excess amount of water they are drinking. That's normally an initial sign of kidney disease. Hopefully you contacted your breeder and let them know your beloved Bull Terrier was born with kidney disease which sadly took his life.
