HELP SAVING MY DOGS FROM ENFORCED CASTRATION

Hello all,
I’m in a dilemma once again saving my Moose (2 in late January) and Memphis (18months in March) from the council laws of desexing. I have done well in holding off till 2years old for Moose whilst I tackled his seizures but are now resolved, but the date is closing near.

I thought I could join a dog association under ‘companion registration but I would still have to adhere to to council laws. My dogs are not pedigree (no papers) so this is why I’m stuck unfortunately.

My boys have done really well being intact in regards to behaviour with one another and whilst out daily. I feel no need to go down this route unnecessarily!

I am trying to arm myself with relevant health positives/data for keeping them intact to take to another holistic/registered vet soon.

Any help to back my ‘responsible dog ownership’ side for the vet would be greatly appreciated as exemptions are only due to negative outcomes for the dog or age of pre-existing health issues, in which I cannot really argue. Moose is doing very well except for allergy issues which pop up but do not hinder exercise, happiness etc. and Memphis is similar.

I would hate to have to take them in for this procedure. If I moved to another suburb, they may change rules and I’d be stuck in a similar challenge.

Hoping for some documented, breeders or any advice asap :)

I do understand what you are saying when it comes to a voluntary operation. But are you planning on breeding them, or is it just the simple fact you don't want to subject them to the procedure? If I were in your shoes, I would have to say." I am not going to breed them, so what harm would it be to have it performed." I completely understand your position, it's not easy having your government dictate your dogs fate. But they will still be the loving dogs they are now, after it is done.
This is only my opinion, but it is what you face in the end.

    The boys look so comfy.
  • Hi Sarah,
The boys look so snuggley and cute! I understand your point off view. In my opinion, I think you're doing the next best thing by taking them to a registered/liscensed holistic vet. I'm sure they have dealt with similar cases. Hopefully they will have solid advice or is able to provide you with documentation. I hope you're doing well :)

    Thankyou both for feedback.
No I’m not breeding or showing just my loveable family additions :)
I don’t want to alter anything in regards to their health as it was and is a constant challenge without an undue and unnecessary procedure (at present) to alter their full body function…that’s it in a nutshell :)

Are you residing in the States? If so, you can easily register your dogs through alternate kennel registries besides AKC which will provide you with papers. CKC is a good example. All you need to do through them is submit a couple photos of your dog and they're register it as a pure bred if if resembles the breed. I'm not a fan of CKC or any other registries besides AKC, which is our National Registry, but if I was in your shoes I certainly register my dogs through any fly by night registry just to obtain documents showing my dog as a pure bred in our to meet council policies.

Nope, I wouldn't want to be forced to surgically remove the sex organs of my dogs either unless it was medically warranted. There are plenty of good documentation online which prove insight as to the negative impact of spay and neutering. Here's a good article I suggest you utilize in your argument.

Thankyou Steve I will definitely use this articles when I visit a new vet. My previous one was hesitant and adamant that 2 years is all she’ll do even though Moose looked fine to her but I argued the seizure activity at that time but since has been resolved.

Unfortunately I’m not in Us I’m in Australia.

I’ll let you know how I go with my outcome presenting your articles :)

    Hello Steve,
It’s unfortunate but my chances of a vet who hasn’t been trained to view the benefits of not desexing are out, or has his hands tied so to speak with bureaucracy , or if they did agree with me….will not put it in writing. My only other option is the temporary implant 6 or 12 month IF my council will allow this with the vets letter…..I am waiting for their confirmation on this now. The plus side to this alternative is no general anaesthetic but I would have to this twice or once yearly.
This is my only option apart from moving! I’ve been here on the coast in Victoria for over twenty years and these are unsettling times for all of us now.
If you know of any harm of this temporary sterilisation implant please let me know what to look out for.
    Thankyou Sarah

    Hello Steve
Boy oh boy what a challenging hurdle I have….still!
Yes I spoke to my vet as the new one pretty much said they wouldn’t give an outright indefinite exemption….and the costs to just talk about it were excessive. My vet suggested a temporary sterilisation implant. Yes I thought that’s great, less invasive, if any adverse effects it too could be removed.
Well the council does not allow this as it isn’t permanent even though I may not want to be a permanent resident in this municipality. I tried to defend my right as a I pay a yearly registration for them I can do the implant yearly too, they get their end goal of a neutral dog for that period. But that doesn’t comply with their law. I’ve spoken to numerous persons in the department and will still get a call from further hierarchy tomorrow. Also they see benefits of intact dog information as a lot if misinformation and not to trust what breeders say :s
Well after feeling very down I got a call back from a breeders association they recognise and hooray for some hope. She advised me to get a DNA test done (which is in the mail) join as a member and she will help with pedigree papers too (which is the other documentation I require) I’m sourcing some parental history as I write and I pray this will save my boys. I’m running out of time as I left this late but as you understand we are in such an emotional time with current restrictions. If this fails my options are to either move (very unlikely) or they have to get altered. But I can ask my vet today if they do the sterilisation you suggested and run it by council tomorrow. I will relay information as it comes through to me :)

Find out if you can get him registered through any canine registry that will provide you with papers. Here in the states there are many fly by night registries happy to take peoples money and provide them with paperwork for their dog. I seriously think some of them would register a duck and allow you to call it a Bull Terrier.

Once you have papers you can explain that you plan on showing your dog at conformation events. All of which mandate that the dogs be in their natural form. You can not show a dog that's been neutered or spayed and altering your dog would prevent you from showing him.

:Thanks Steve that sounds promising. This is probably where the ‘breeder association’ had hopes in as she sounded confident in getting it sorted but I was to organise DNA/parent info etc. I received DNA kit today and sent it off asap. Waiting on advice from her to go forward. Council never back anyway.
Oh I asked a few vets about the Zeuterin and no one had knowledge. Was advised of vasectomy option which benefits the dog with testosterone but they won’t provide sterilisation document for council anyway as this is reversible.
I’ll keep you updated as I progress :)

A lady stopped me to show me some street art in the city ;)

    Hello Tina :)
You have read my dilemma but I just received some positive news this morning that it looks to be all good with the route I’m travelling pending dna. They don’t have to pass by much is my understanding so fingers crossed I’ll keep my boys natural
I need universe blessings to keep coming through for us!
Yes you don’t see this street art enough, someone loved their bully <3
I hope you’re both well and sharing good times with one another as always xx
