Need help finding a Doggo!

edited November 2019 in General
Hi, Thanks for reading this, any help is appreciated. I am looking to add a White or Near White, Male puppy (3mos or less preferably) to my family. I've got lots of experience with animals of all types and have done my research on this particular breed as well in preparation.

I am however having a hard time finding a breeder that's even within 15 hours of me that has what I am looking for. I have found some in the range of 1500 and above but it is a bit beyond my means. I am able to spend closer to 800-1000 at most, I don't need papers or plan to breed or show. Just want a good pet!

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I understand these dogs can be expensive I mean no insult as far as price, just looking for help. This seemed to be a great place to start.

Thanks So much!

I understand where you are coming from with price and availability. Been there myself with both of my EBT's. First try looking in adjoining states. Keep your eyes open for the scammers, they are all over the place. Your next option may be to find a Bull terrier Rescue in your state or one that serves to your state. There are a lot of 1 to 1 1/2 yr old pups there. Trust me when i tell you, at that age they are still learning and full of energy. EBT's will bond very quickly as well, as they love attention.

These options may not always be around you. I know for a fact that NY, CT, NJ, PA, and all the way down through the east coast to FL. They all have breeders in them. You may have to wait for a litter, but patience is key. Also be sure to expect a lot of questions. I good breeder will be as interested in you as you are in the pups. Keep away from a backyard breeder if you can. You are right on the lower end of the value scale with no papers/pet quality. A breeder will easily have 500-800 dollars tied up in a 3 month old Puppy.

There is a good reason there are not a ton of this breed around. Just keep looking.

You have a lot of great people on this forum. You should get a few good leads.

    Best of luck to you.
  • Hey ! Thanks for the response, I definitely don't mind traveling a bit. I am trying to avoid a rescue because I have a young girl and a baby on the way, so I want to be in as early as possible with training and socializing etc.

I completely understand the breeder asking many questions as well, that's fine by me. I've raised more animals than I can remember, growing up on a 200 acre farm I've seen it all. Though I have never had a EBT, I have owned a boxer who was my favorite pet ever and they seem a bit similar, clowns :)

Currently have two rescue cats and a Dwarf Boa Constrictor who may live another 30 plus years, I take my pets seriously and they are like family. Thank you so much for any help to everyone reading this , it is much appreciated.

Here's an article I wrote a few years ago which will help provide you information on what to look for from a responsible Bull Terrier Breeder - https://bulliesofnc.com/finding-reputable-bull-terrier-breeder/

  • Hey thanks so much for the link, I had actually already found and read through the entire write-up a few days back, it was very helpful!

I realize that I may end up having to pay a little more than what I was initially hoping but I definitely don't need A show quality dog, just a good healthy Pet. Thanks again for any help, and to anyone else reading this thank you as well.

In the past I have always been able to locate a reasonably priced animal relative to average costs for the respective breed. And while they don't like to give them away of course I have found most breeders are happy to make a little less profit knowing the dog/animal is going to be strictly a family pet, in a great home. Hoping for similar results finding a Great Bull Terrier.

    Anything helps thanks everyone!

@NightRider - I'm confident you'll find many breeders selling their puppies for cheap prices. I see litters being advertised on social media often for very low prices. It's apparent these breeders can keep their prices low simply because they are not conducting very costly genetic health tests on their breeding dogs along with the puppies. Heck a BAER test alone costs an arm and leg so having an entire litter BAER tested is a lot more than people imagine. Kidney tests, Ecocardiograms, allergy tests, etc are common tests that "responsible" breeders will conduct in order to ensure the best possible chances of producing healthy puppies free from genetic disorder. Many breeders aren't even having DNA Tests conducted on their breeding dogs. I suppose when breeders cut corners on proper health tests they can certainly keep their puppy prices low by offering their puppies up for sale with unknown or uncertain health disorders. I can guarantee there are many hearing impaired Bull Terriers out there that the owners think can hear perfectly fine. Some may even be completely deaf in one ear.
No breeder advertises their litters as "Show Dogs." They might be of show quality based on the pedigree reputation and show standings within their pedigree. Many people aren't too concerned about seeing Champion pedigree because they have no intention of showing the puppy they plan on purchasing but others choose to purchase from a reputable breeder knowing their bloodlines possess proper bone structure, conformation, and other elements that emulate the breed standards. These type of breeders are the ones who are Health Testing their dogs as well the puppies they produce. This enables them to provide 2 year health guarantees on their puppies which is something of importance to every potential puppy owner regardless if they are looking for a Pet quality or Show quality. Normally with the breeders bypassing expensive health tests they are also accepting other faults like temperament which is why many Bull Terriers are dog aggressive. But on a good note, I suppose you can find these puppies selling for a lot less. You just have to gamble on the true health of the puppies along with their temperament.

  • We went through this for nearly 8months trying to find a pup. Most of the rescues denied us because I have a paralyzed cat. The breeders around me also either would not pick up or had very very delayed response times and would say "we have a long waiting list" or something of the sorts. Finally found our boy and now our breeder of choice over in Russia. Since that's a bit far for you the most I can say is just keep looking! There will be one that aligns with you all eventually!!! Take my word for it! 8 months of searching was worth it!!
