New puppy - now we have two!

Hello. We have a one year old (14 month) female Bull Terrier named Bosco. She is sweet. Good with kids and loves to play. Likes to nip my son's ears in a playful way. But intense. She likes other dogs. We thought getting another Bull Terrier to have as a playmate would be good. We got a female BT a few days ago and called her Denali. She is now 10 weeks. Very sweet and gentle. Loves people and kisses a lot. Our dog Bosco loves other dogs. Maybe too much. Bosco follows Denali around the house. Nips her ears. Not in a hurtful way. Very playful. A bit dominant. Never draws blood. Not aggressive. But the pup eventually gets fed up and snarls. It is a constant watching Bosco chase her around the house, get her ears, and they play but then the pup gets fed up and the pup gets real upset. Our dog trainer is awesome - well known in our area. He came and watched them. Said most of their interactions are 75% play and 25% the pup getting fed up. He wasn't too worried. He said we should let it play out unless the puppy just seems so fed up then give her a break from Bosco. But it stresses me out like crazy! I worry that she won't ever relax. Or maybe it will turn into aggression. I have never had two dogs at the same time. Will they have a less "crazy" interaction when she grows up? Any experiences with this?

This behavior will subside in due time. Bosco is still a puppy herself and wanting desperately to play but doesn't know how to control herself. Give them time.

  • Thank you for commenting! I appreciate it :) I still don't know if I should intervene? If so, when? If the puppy seems fed up? Or should I let the puppy stand up for herself?

Each situation is different but I often try and intervene in order to send a message so it's understood that their behavior is not going to be tolerated.

We have 5 year old MBT female and we brought a 10 week old MBT into the mix with a 15 15 year old Miniature schnauzer. The schnauzer was just cranky and the 5 yr old MBT who is normally a typical bully, large and in charge, was terrified of the puppy. WE GAVE THEM A FEW DAYS THEN THE 5 yr old took over like momma now the baby bully is 7 months old and the 5 year old does get fed up and let's her know when enough is enough. The baby bully has a few scars on her forehead but 85% of the time they play and play hard.

We had a 7 year old(Ulani) and her mother who is 10(Caia). We just got a 4 month old(Ash). The puppy is crazy and full of energy of course. We figured it would be good for Lani to have a play mate since she is chock full of energy. Lani loves to play with her but only for a bit, then she gets tired and wants to stop. But of course Ash wants to keep going. We basically just let them work it out. Ash has to learn when to stop. Lani will growl and nibble her ear, never in a mean way. Just in a "look kid I'm done leave me alone" way. We let them go until yelping happens. then we break them up. You just have to let them work it out. They will calm down eventually. Just don't yell at them or be mean. They aren't being bad ya know? Just being bullies.
