Possible spinning and excessive barking.

Okay so, I just adopted a BT who is a year old from a lady and she swears up and down he never had a problem with spinning until he had a alergic reaction from some soap she washed his bedding with.. Now his testicles are red and we took him to the vet and they gave us ointment to put on them. He still spins.. but periodically he will stop and bite his testicles.. So I guess the question is would an allergic reaction cause this to happen..? There are times he spins faster than this. Plus He has a bald spot on the top of his tail. Please we need help with this situation.. We just got him last week and we are already in 1000$ for deworming, vaccines, shots, medication etc. He is getting neutered and chipped on the 28th of this month.

I personally never owned a male EBT only females. As for the spinning. You can curb the activity and teach them to keep it at bay. Diversion always worked well for us. Once you spot the spin, stop them and give them their favorite toy. Keep their attention until the behavior has passed. Spinning and tail chasing is common in EBT's. I've ruled most of it to OCD. An action that yeilds results only to the one doing it. It is truly up to you to derail that train.

The bald spot could be one of a few things, he catches his tail and pulls the hair out, or it could just be a scent gland. There are 2 glands most common bald spots, the base of the tail and between the ears. They most definitely grow out of the bald spots if they are gland related.

The testicles are possibly itchy or swollen. This would cause him to want to pay attention to them. Heck, I have had poison in that area and I could not leave it alone.

You are doing the right thing by doing the vet visits. Keep that up. Rescues are always going to be a little bit more work. As they say " No good deed goes unpunished ". You are wise to be concerned and I am almost sure someone else on here has some more advice. These people on here are great and overflowing with knowledge. All the best to you.
  • I have done tons of research and looked at medication such as clomicalm. I wanted it as a last result though. We are praying it's just the cause of his itchy testicles... I feel like we were lief to by the lady about alot of things.. More help would be great from other people as well.. Thank you for responding @that1Boomer.
This is our new Baby boy. He was a little sunburned when we got him aswell.. I dont know if he had the best living condition before we got him.. He had hookworms etc..

  • He is super handsome! you can use baby sunscreen on him when he is in the sun . I have a rescue mini. We got her when she was 5 to 6 months old and she was a crazy spinner ( I believe she was crated a lot with her previous owner which caused OCD/spinning),we tried for almost a year to break the habit and finally went to clomicalm as a last resort .I can tell you the clomicalm does work she no longer spins. I can also tell you that other than that I do not see any difference in her personality, I was worried that it would change her .With all the other issues you seem to have had with your rescue it seems that his previous owner did not treat him very well, not sure I would believe her about the spinning. Have you tried giving him Benadryl to see it the itching stops? Bull terriers can have allergies so it's possible he does. My Mackenzie has allergies .

    A very good looking Boy.

A good side note on the barking. It is most likely due to poor conditions and lack of attention. Give him time to adjust to your family, bond to someone. My last girl barked at everything. Some talk more than others. My current girl is very quiet in comparison.

You have your hands full. Work on the most problematic issues and pay him more attention then you think he needs. They love attention. Always.
  • Thank you! What are reccomendations on crating them while sleeping and while at work..? I dont want to make this whole spinning thing worse.. but I also dont want him to be destructive to all the furniture.

We crate ours. She loves her sleep time crate. The other is bigger and she spends the day in there. When I get home. She is ready for anything and everything. Full on wired. You will need to find out how to burn off all the energy. Mine does walking and playing catch for hours. Eventually. they will slow down, but they like to gooooooooooo. lol
  • what size crate do you have her in? Our crate is 36 inches long. We have been walking him every night for a long walk. but we will probably have to do more than that to get him to slow down lol.
  • This is the 36 inch crate we have him in. Does it need to be bigger?

Mine sleeps in one about that size. The one she spends the day in could fit 3 of her. lol

I will say this. Mine has enough room for 3 to fit, but she still crams herself up against one end. She is not right in the head. lol

Yours looks comfy in that one.

Redness on the nose etc can all be from allergies. There are so many great posts on this site to help. I adopted a BT with all sorts of issues and this forum saved me!! Benadryl at night has worked wonders for my BT. We have tried the expensive shots and other meds but Benadryl has helped the most. Also, I use Jax n Daisy shampoo and lotion. It really seems to help her itchy skin. Thank you for adopting, your new baby boy is adorable and deserves to have a safe and happy home!
  • I beleive he is a Minature seeing he only weighs 38 pounds. Then again it's possible hes a normal sized one but the hook worms he has just drained him.
  • He's a gorgeous boy my boy and my old girl had the bald spot on their tails Liam is now 10 months old and the bald spot on his tail is now just starting to fade,he can also be a spinner he has one particular ball he loves which squeeks but he only gets this ball when he stops spinning,Liam has a crate your size for sleeping but he halso has a 48inch for daytime
  • Mackenzie will be 3 in October and I still crate her when we are not home. I have 3 dogs the other 2 are 13 and 12 one is a female and her and Mackenzie have issues every once in awhile so they are always supervised. I am lucky my son lives at home so Mackenzie's crate is open during the day when he is there .She spends a lot of time in it sleeping during the day at least until I get home from work I think she believes I am her toy :) we crate her at night in our bedroom .The longest she is ever in her crate is 4 maybe 5 hours and that is only on the days my son goes to school .
  • Mackenzie will bark at anyone that walks by my house if my front door is open if it is another dog she goes nuts … we are working on this daily with her but I'm not sure she will ever get past it .Fortunately if all else fails I can close the door .

lol, my last bully would bark at the mailman. Once and a while he would come to the door, she would run around his legs and lick his knees. but the next day, she barked more. lol She lived up to her nickname of Little Turtlehead.
  • Mackenzie's nickname is Punk and god does she live up to it :)
