5 year old standard EBT quit wanting to walk

Our 5 year old Zeus used to love to walk everyday. He would sit and stare at me after I got home from work to remind me to walk him.
Now he refuses to go much further that off the porch to pee.
The vet and find nothing wrong with him. He plays in the house with his sister (a 5 year old staffie Mia) running around until they are both panting hard.
She loves to walk but he wants nothing to do with it.
I have a neighbor with a EBT who around the same age started refusing to walk.
Any ideas?

Can it be just too hot for him to enjoy his walks? Vinnie does not want to walk either, every single summer. Just to the tree and back.
  • My Mackenzie doesn't love walks ,she would rather play with her kong. There was a period when during our walk she would grab the leash in her teeth ,turn around and drag me back home . Now she is really only interested in going around the block or to the park a block away.

My last BT did not like to walk after a year or so. My latest is 1 yr 2 months and will not miss a walk. She will drink alot of water but still wants more. The best part is she drinks right from a water bottle.
  • My dog did this too. He has paw problems, and is heat sensitive so summer walks are usually short. He also became bored with the walks we were taking, always the same neighborhood... he now has a series of routes so each walk is different, its all so he can keep track of his marks and see if any fruit is ripened yet. He is a smart guy, sniffs out ripe fruit blocks away. Even found a secret path to the elementary school with a wild American persimmon tree last fall.

I would try a paw plunger to rinse the feet, i put a bit of medicated shampoo in mine because of the cracks and redness and swelling, but if the paws aren't looking rough a rinse in water will be fine. Sidenote- Not sure if my dog is just awesome or something but he lets me do anything to him and his feet. I know a whole lot of dogs who will bite if you get your hands near their paws (former grooming assistant)

I clean the paws and use mushers secret or bag balm. Occasionally a vitamin e cream or squeeze the oil from a capsule and rub it.

If the paws are soft and not calloused, nails are not too long, no hyper keratin or anything it might be boredom. Go to a park or a nature trail and see if that makes it more interesting.
  • thanks for all of your comments. found a vet to help him. soaking feet to soften the hard keratosis. also using bag balm helps. will try the vitamin e.
The new vet has been a big help.

    again Thanks all
