New BT owner

MooseMoose Canada
Although I’ve owned many breeds prior, I’ve never had the pleasure of an EBT as I’m leaning very quickly. New pup has captured my heart and made me laugh more than I ever expected. At only 3 months, he is incredibly loyal and loving. And although my hands are more full with him than any other dogs prior, I already know I’m in for years of true companionship.

Good looking Pup. Get ready for the wild ride. He will test you and love you all the way. He will push the limits and then want to snuggle because you hurt his feelings by correcting him. They are a fun bread but challenging as well. Good luck and again, Great looking EBT.
  • He's a cutie and I agree get ready for the ride … I Love my Mackenzie with all my Heart but boy does she push my limits :)

Mackenzie is a beaut! Is it normal that this pup prefers my flesh over toys? He’s only 3 months but oh man he’s like Jekyll and Hyde. And he’s very territorial and dog aggressive already... He is the sweetest, loving pup ever but I’m amazed being so young how strong-willed and confident he is. He obeys me except for playing rough but will take full advantage of anyone who doesn’t assert dominance.

In all honesty, at 3 months. I would say you just need to make it through this phase of growing for him. Even if the teeth do not hurt you when it happens. Say ouch loudly. This works for all the litter mates when play gets too ruff. They yelp loudly. Trust me, there is a point where he will understand he is touching you with teeth and this will curb. You will still have the occasional mistaking hand for toy play but nothing like what he is doing now. A good firm OUCH will go a long way.

I appreciate the insight! I do definitely do the loud OUCH, which sometimes he considers a challenge. He’s starting to get it. He comes to work with me everyday, so he’s starting to understand nobody wants to play when he bites lol! This pup is too smart for his own good sometimes. He weighed in at 35lbs today. I know it varies from dog to dog, but for the most part should I anticipate that he just may not be dog friendly and accept it? He is incredibly pushy and rude to other dogs- regardless of their size.

EBT's are known for rough play. The actions seem pushy but the truth is, the want to dominate while playing. Most times that is all it is. Look for the hair standing and the tail down. That is aggression. You seem to be socializing and i would continue that. The more you put him in social environments, the better he will be.

So take his weight at 3 months and multiply that by 2, then add half. Say 20 lbs at 3 months would be 20 X 2 = 40, then add 10 = 50. That is a good way to find a rough weigh as an adult. Keep in mind, Most wont get over 80 lbs. Mine is right on track with the calculations.

They are very active as puppies. Mine never seems to never be ready to settle and she is 14 months. Train train train, they are sponges right now. Teach him all you can. they like the challenge. As I always tell people, I am no professional, I know what works for me and my last 2 BT's. I know they are all different personality wise but all the same in their actions.
  • I am a first time bull terrier owner as well ,although I have a mini. I rescued mine at 5 months so had to work with what I got. She was a big time bitter when I first got her and OUCH barely worked to curb that ,she is now 2 and a half she no longer bites and when it happens during play (accident) and I do the ouch she feels so bad … it takes lots of time and patience. As for the dog aggression ,I have 3 dogs ,she loves her dogs but is not so good with others. It really depends on the other dog because I have found some that she likes .Good Luck :)
  • I am a new EBT owner. “TRIXIE “ is an 11month old female. The past few months she has had bouts of bumps that just show up on her skin. You can actually tell thru her fur because it looks bumpy on her back. I feed her NutriSource Large Breed Puppy ( referred by breeder) and just a couple days ago have been mixing Zesty Paws organic extra virgin coconut oil into her food at breakfast and dinner because I am in the beginner stages of introduction of the oil, which is what I have read on this blog.
Is the food causing this? What supplements do I need to add? Or is the coconut oil all I need?

@Kshahbas - Sounds like an allergic reaction. Fleas can also cause a similar reaction especially if your Bullie is allergic to them.
As you've probably heard me say on several other related comments, my best advice would be to bump up your Bull Terriers immune system which will prevent many things from having an effect on her to begin with. The best thing you could provide your Bullie would be a supplement called NuVet. Provide her with one daily along with a good diet and exercise and I guarantee you'll see a huge change.

  • Thanks for the advice. I know it’s not fleas because there are none on her and we do not have a flea problem in this area. As for the Nuvet supplement, do I give that to her along with the coconut oil? And what is the best food to have her on because she is not very fond of the NutriSource large breed puppy?
Also, her exercise is very limited because she recently broke her back right leg. (Fibula and Tibia) and had 2-plates and 6- screws put in it. This was July 16,2019 when this was done, and so her activity is extremely limited to 4- 15 min walks a day on leash until Jan, then she can do more things. Tell you one thing, try to keep a Bullie puppy calm!!!
  • Those bumps could be the allergic reaction to chicken or grains in dog's food. You can try to feed her grain/chicken free food for a month to see if her skin improves.
  • Hi
Can you give me some suggestions on food because I am not finding chicken/ grain free in large breed puppy?
I’ve been searching the web since yesterday.
    Thank
  • Why do you want to feed her large breed food? Of course this is your personal choice but I'm pretty sure most EBT owners feed their dogs regular puppy food or regular adult food (if not on raw diet). I compared nutritional analysis of your NutriSource Large Breed Puppy, Blue Buffalo Wilderness Rocky Mountain Puppy, Merrick Grain-Free Real Texas Beef + Sweet Potato Puppy, and VICTOR Active Dog & Puppy Formula. Your large breed formula for some reason is lower in protein while crude fat % is almost the same (only 1-2% lower) compared to reg puppy food. I'm not an expert but as I know large breed puppy food should be high in protein and low in fat to keep them slim.
    Just to compare large breed puppy with regular puppy food: your NutriSource has 26% protein, 14% fat and 4% fiber - 400 kcal/cup. Blue Buffalo Wilderness Puppy 32% protein, 16% fat, 5% fiber - 427 kcal/cup, Merric Puppy 28% protein, 15% fat, 4.5% fiber - 400 kcal/cup. Victor Puppy 33% protein, 16% fat, 3.8% fiber - 384 kcal/cup.
I'm sure, if you compare nutrients, you will find good grain/chicken free food for your pup.
