Tail chasing

I am a first time Bull Terrier owner and my boy is almost 6 months. A few weeks ago he started chasing his tail and now that is all he does all long.
i have done some research on this, and i cant find anything on the subject. i have had alot of different dogs and they have never chased tail as much as my bully. everything else is normal ( sleeping, eating, and drinking). i was wondering if this is a normal habit for bull terriers. any info on the subject would be greatly welcomed.

  • I strongly suggest that you work very hard now to stop the behavior . My mini is a rescue we got her at 5 months and this was her biggest issue she literally could not ,would not stop chasing her tail. We found that lots of exercise and training helped .As soon as she started chasing her tail I would either take her outside side and throw her kong or take her for a walk after 8 months of doing everything to stop the behavior we finally asked the vet for help she is now on clomicalm and the behavior has completely stopped. I am not suggesting that you put your dog on any drug I do however believe that if the person who owned our mini had put the time in she might not have ended up with the issues she has. I do know that bull terriers are incredibly smart and energetic dogs they need positive outlets :)

Tail chasing is an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). It's most often caused from stress and anxiety due to not getting enough exercise to burn off pent up energy. Too much crate time can easily cause this too. Many OCD's can also be a genetic disorder passed down from the sire or dam but most often tail chasing is due to insufficient exercise.
