Absolutely! I use bag balm for all kinds of cuts, scrapes, and rashes.

  • Anyone have any good suggestions on how to apply it to a dog that bites anytime she thinks you are putting medicine on her . We really have tried everything but am always open to new suggestions...

No Bull Terrier should attempt to bite for any reason. Put a muzzle on her and break her of that habit.

  • I think there's more information needed. What the medication is and where is it being applied? What the injury is? How the dog normally interacts with that person (can the dog be pet under normal circumstances)?

While I agree a muzzle may be necessary, if the dog has a bad history or is in a lot of pain it may change the situation. Behavior modification would be the long term solution.
  • Let me explain , The medicine is bag balm and I want to put it on her feet . It's a really long story but I will make it shorter ... Mackenzie is a rescue and came to us with some issues which we have and are working very hard to correct .Not knowing what her first 5 to 6 months of life were like this can be challenging . She has had some crate aggression issues which we have almost overcome but the hardest one now is that anytime we attempt to put medicine on her she snaps at us. At times we can work thru it with distraction and peanut butter .The foot injury isn't bad just a little raw from allergies .It's weird she will let me look at it but the minute i have medicine on my finger she knows and won't let me next to it. She is super sweet to people she knows, she is not the kind of dog that a stranger can walk up to and pet ,she is better with women than men . I have thought of a muzzle but haven't gone there yet. I truly believe its fear and not aggression and I agree NO dog should be allowed to bite but how exactly do I break her of it with a muzzle ? You don't think that would make her more fearful ?
  • Corey, would it help to start with the meds on your finger, but without approaching the paw at first? I'm thinking you could make her gradually indifferent to it. Slowly work your way up to the affected paw, giving her time to get used to the idea.

As an alternative, start with something harmless you can put on her paw, like yoghurt or peanut butter. That way she'll associate the action with a positive outcome. Then switch to the medicine. If she eats a little of it no harm done. I use it on Phoebe all the time.
  • @mark Great idea ! I will try that . I was able to get some on it the last 2 days with help .My son fed her dried turkey treats while I rubbed it on her paw and yes I put it on my finger .
